Burrows Cave is the name given to an alleged cave site in a disputed location in Southern Illinois allegedly discovered by Russell E. Burrows. Burrows says it contained a number of artifacts. Through the many inconsistencies that evolve around Russell E. Burrows' story of discovery and its findings, the cave and its contents are considered a hoax by mainstream archaeologists and some fringe archaeologists.
Burrows says he discovered the cave while hiking along the hillside miles away from the Ohio River, where he later claims that he was searching for buckles from the Civil War-era and pioneer horseshoes with his metal detector. Burrows says that he came across a hole into which he fell that led him into the mysterious cave full of priceless ancient artifacts. During the time of the discovery, it was thought that the alleged cave must have been located in Richland County somewhere near the town Olney, Illinois where Burrows resided at the time. The cave was said to have contained numerous archaeological artifacts, including carvings, coins, and other items. Burrows claimed that he did not want to give away the location of the cave because he believed that the cave would be robbed of its ancient treasures. Many of the purported artifacts are said to have inscriptions in various ancient languages such as Numidian and lybique, etc., but the inscriptions are generally meaningless. Burrows claims that the cave is a tomb holding the artifacts and remains of 13 crypts. To date, nobody outside Burrows's immediate circle has claimed to have been inside the cave, and many of the claimed artifacts have been revealed as forgeries. The cave and its artifacts are widely considered to be a hoax or fraud, even among proponents of other pseudoarchaeological theories such as Barry Fell. The idea has gained some traction within proponents of Mormon archaeology and hyperdiffusionism theorists such as Frank Collin (writing as Frank Joseph).
Burrows and the cave were one of the subjects of the second season Grand Canyon Treasure episode of America Unearthed and the show Holy Grail in America, both produced by the History Channel.
Thomas Emerson, the Illinois state archaeologist and former head of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency warned that the claims being made by Burrows cave proponents were sensational, and not backed by solid evidence.
With no evidence of the cave and its existence, many archaeologists quickly dismiss Burrows and the alleged cave.
Until about 1993, the predominant Burrows Cave scenario involved Numidian and Libyan (North African) colonists. Part of the evidence for this involved a stone tablet supposedly depicting a Numidian vessel. Frank Joseph, one of the key figures involved with the cave, reproduced this in his book The Lost Treasure of King Juba: The Evidence of Africans in America before Columbus alongside an image of an actual Numidian vessel that had been used by an associate of Burrows who had originally identified it as numedian. In doing so he cropped the image from the Burrows stone making the paddle end of a steering oar unidentifiable but leaving the steering oars that are shown on what he calls (and the artist depicts) as the prow of the boat. The anthropologist and geographer George F. Carter, a supporter of the concept of trans-cultural diffusion, commented on the image saying The 'author' did not recognize the paired oars, and hung an 'impossible' oar over the bow. All others equally botched up. Fanciful stern pieces...Oar over bow - crude fakery by an ignoramus in the world of ships.
The image used to identify the ship as Numidian actually is dated to around 700 BCE, but Joseph described it as dated 170 BCE, possibly because around this time Burrows Cave was being portrayed as the destination of Mauretanians, including exiled Romans, Africans, Celts, Christians and Jews fleeing the Romans taking with them an alleged treasure belong to King Juba II.

Hi, we are Julie & Zach, a couple who sold everything in 2018 and took off an adventure around the world! So far, this journey has taken us in a van ALL ACROSS the United States and Canada, from snorkeling with manatees in Florida to camping in the Grand Canyon to climbing glaciers in Canada, and everything in between! We were both working and going to school while living in Chicago in 2017 and 2018, and to be honest it really wore on us. We were exhausted, unfulfilled, and ready for an adventure. So, we made it happen! We saved up AS MUCH as we could over those 2 years - all homemade meals, no shopping, walk or bike everywhere, etc - and sold almost all of our belongings! With that money, we bought a renovated a van that we have been living in ever since! We started our YouTube channel a few weeks ago and have been loving creating videos! When we started, we were SO SO SO SO bad at it, and to be honest we still kinda suck, but we want to get better! What videos do you want to see? What do you want to know? Let us know and we will make it happen!

Exploring Illinois' Natural Beauty
After spending four months in the desert, being surrounded by so many lush, towering trees and countless waterways in Illinois feels amazing!
A medical emergency with Tori's Dad brought us rushing to the Chicago area of Illinois. It was a rough couple of weeks as we stood by his side through his recovery and healing. After everything started to settle down a little, we got a surprise visit from some dear friends, so we decided it was time to start exploring!

MAQUOKETA CAVES STATE PARK
One of the coolest places in IOWA. Believe it or not this is in Iowa.

The only downside to going here is that it was 3 hours away from Des Moines, but it was worth the drive, just packed a lunch+water and spent the day here. So much to explore and do, I didn't film every cave we went into, otherwise this video would be an hour or so long. Also we weren't prepared to be covered head to toe(literally) in mud. So throw on old shoes, tshirt and pants for this place because it is very muddy, and go even on days that it's 75 degrees outside because once your in the caves it drops to freezing cold!!
Southern Illinois - The land between the rivers in 4k
Southern Illinois lies between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and is a hidden gem in the midwest. This land is surrounded by the Shawanee National forest and has rivers, lakes, forests, hills, and much more. Southern Illinois is the perfect place to go to seek outdoor adventure including hiking, biking, fishing, boating, zip lining, ATV's, climbing, and hunting. I was able to capture the pinnacle of the 2017 solar eclipse on time lapse video while i was there. Some of my favorite spots include Garden of the Gods, tunnel hill bike path, little grand canyon, Rim Rock state park, Cave in Rock state park, cache river, lake Egypt, trig tower, and Bell Smith Springs.
I filmed everything with the DJI Mavic pro in the air and GoPro HERO 5 on the ground.

The State of Rock Art in North America 1 - Lawrence Loendorf
From the high plains of Canada to caves in the southeastern United States, ancient images etched into and painted onto stone by Native peoples have inspired observers to question their origins and meanings. Rock paintings (pictographs) and engravings (petroglyphs) can be found in nearly every state and province, and each region has its own distinctive story of discovery and investigation of the rock art record. Lawrence Loendorf gives an illustrated talk that offers new information and approaches to research about both the ancient locations and modern meanings of these enduring images. An archaeologist and rock art specialist, Loendorf is president of Sacred Sites Research, which records and analyzes pictograph and petroglyph sites and promotes their protection. He is also an award-winning professor and author.
This talk was webcast live and recorded in the Rasmuson Theater of the National Museum of the American Indian on May 18, 2017.
Illinois' Cache River
From our About Illinois series -- we travel to deep southern Illinois to look at the massive wetlands that are a part of the Cache River area. The Cache River formed after glaciers pushed the Ohio River about 20 miles south, to its current location. When the glaciers melted, the former Ohio River channel, filled with water, creating a swamp of some 200,000 acres. This is the most norther of the southern swamps that dot the southern states. The Cache River looks as if it is the Louisiana Bayou, and also remains unknown -- even to many who were born and raised in Illinois. But it is the home to vast fauna, wildlife, and to trees that were 500 years old when Columbus came to America.
