Where the City Has Come From:
Cedar Rapids Restores Murals in City Hall
Updated: Tuesday, May 21 2013, 05:56 PM CDT CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS2/FOX28) --
Re-imagining the past can start with just a few small brush strokes, but end with a giant piece of history. That is what is happening in the City Council chambers at City Hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as art conservator Scott Haskins and his two assistants work for three weeks to peel back layers of paint decades deep from the surface of the second of four murals in the room.
The mural, entitled Inherited Culture was painted by Harry Donald Jones in 1936. It depicts men discovering artifacts from ancient Mayan civilizations, learning the modern techniques of agriculture and watching the progress of industry. The theme of the painting is remarkably close to the focus of Haskins' work. We are here today because of the people that have been before us, Haskins said. So we build on what other people have worked on, so that's what art is and why it touches us.
Just as Haskins and his assistants build upon a work of genius by filling out the canvas with extra paint, they also have to make up for the mistakes made in the mural's 76-year lifespan. He points out where the workers who painted out the mural sanded the surface of the mural and did other damage. Haskins also had circled sections of the mural in chalk; they show the parts of the canvas that have pulled away from one of the many layers of the wall. To fix them, Haskins injects the wall with an adhesive to make sure everything gets reattached. Once it's set, though, anyone can come enjoy it.
Assistant City Manager Sandi Fowler hopes people do just that. It's free and open to anyone that wants to come look at it, whether you're attending a meeting or you just want to come see it. That's a pretty neat way to incorporate art into everyday life, Fowler said. If, for no other reason, to remember the past. I mean, this is City Hall. This is the center of government in Cedar Rapids, and I think it's highly appropriate that there be a time capsule from the past that shows people where the city has come from, Haskins said.
The 48-foot long mural is the second of four that the city plans to uncover in the room. Fowler is hoping to uncover a third in the fall of this year, but the city needs to get more grants and funding first. Each mural costs about $125,000 to restore including associated building improvements. A fund has been set up at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation for interested parties to make donations.

Irma Recovery Begins; Storm Flooded Parts Of Florida, South Carolina And Georgia
Source:
As Florida residents assess damage left by Hurricane Irma, the system's latest victims include more than a million people without power in Georgia and South Carolina, where coastal areas also reported heavy flooding.
Irma is now a post-tropical cyclone in Alabama, a rain storm with top winds of only 25 mph — a far cry from the Category 4 storm that ravaged the Florida Keys on Sunday.
Moody's Analytics estimates the economic cost of Hurricane Irma to be from $64-92 billion, a tally that includes both property damage and lost economic output.
Details about Hurricane Irma's destruction, and the effort to recover from it, are still emerging. Here are the stories we're seeing about a storm that caused evacuations and floods as its winds attacked trees and buildings:
Florida
The U.S. Navy has sent several ships near the Florida Keys, including the aircraft carrier the USS Abraham Lincoln, to lend personnel and supplies to the relief effort being led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Miami's international airport has resumed passenger and cargo flights, saying it will have a limited schedule on Tuesday. The first arrival was an American Airlines flight from Seattle that landed at 7:06 a.m.
Miami Beach lacks power, but all its causeways were reopened Tuesday morning.
People who fled Irma in the Keys have been waiting for a chance to see how their homes and businesses fared during the storm, but they've been unable to return because of blocked roads and safety checks on bridges. On Tuesday morning, residents who live in the upper Keys, including Key Largo, Tavernier and Islamorada, are being allowed to drive home.
Key West was hit hard; here's an update from member station WLRN's Nancy Klingener:
Life in Key West at least for those of us who escaped major structural or water damage has acquired a provisional ad hoc quality. It's like we've been transported to the pre-digital pre-cellphone era. In fact, it's the pre-telephone era for most of us.
So information — that commodity that used to be instantly available from that phone in your pocket - it's suddenly a scarce resource ....
I have to show up where I hope someone will be, then write it down on paper and use that old stand-by word of mouth to get the information out. Like: The water will be on from 10 to 12 tomorrow so we can all shower and flush.
Georgia
Governor Nathan Deal has expanded the state of emergency to include all counties in Georgia, Georgia Public Broadcasting reported as Irma hit the state Monday. State government offices will be closed Monday and Tuesday except for essential personnel.
The station says coastal areas, including Savannah and Tybee Island and Brunswick, were under a storm surge warning of 4-6 feet. In Savannah, stately oaks were seen toppled — but local bar Pinkie Masters was serving thirsty customers after opening at 1:30 p.m., Savannah Now reports.
Flooding hit neighboring Tybee Island hard, covering neighborhoods with deep water and cutting off the island from Savannah.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports: The storm surge reached 4.7 feet. A king tide, as it's known colloquially, is an especially high tide that coincides with a full moon. Unfortunately, it also coincided with Irma, and the storm surge combined with the tide resulted in swells of up to 15 feet.
Floodwaters are standing on parts of St. Simons Island, where many have also reported no electricity.
Have not seen Georgia Power yet, but we know they're coming, Buff Leavy of the Brunswick News said in a video report Tuesday morning.
South Carolina
Incredible flooding going on in Downtown Charleston, the National Weather Service said Monday afternoon.
At its height, the storm generated a nearly 10-foot tide, the Post and Courier reports. That was 4 feet more than normal and among the worst tidal surges in 80 years after Hugo in 1989 and a storm in 1940. It was about 8 inches higher than last year's Hurricane Matthew.
The waters were so high in nearby Folly Beach that they freed a famous local landmark — a boat that had been deposited along a road by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, and which had become a popular canvas for graffiti art. It came to rest against a dock whose owner managed to tie a line to it.
Other coastal areas, including Hilton Head and Beaufort, also saw floods. And at Edisto Beach, which has struggled to rebuild after Hurricane Matthew hit it hard last October, the ocean once again pushed past the dunes and onto surface streets.
On Tuesday morning, more than a dozen S.C. counties were either closed or opening on a delay to allow employees to deal with the storm's aftermath. Copyright 2017 NPR. To see more, visit
Delaware Seashore State Park RV Camping Rain Sun Beach and Happy Children
It's a good thing I re-did the RV roof earlier this year (See my other video about that).... Because it was pouring when we arrived at Delaware Seashore State Park RV Camp. But later we had fabulous weather for a great time at the beach. DSSP RV Camp is a really nice place. It was mostly full, as you might expect in summer. And yet it doesn't feel crowded. Nice playground for the kiddos, easy beach access, clean restrooms and showers. A very family-friendly place. The Indian River Marina is within walking distance from the North Campground. And I was able to do some running on the Burton Island Hiking Trail through some marshes. The trail was easy to follow, but slightly overgrown in some places with weeds up to my knees. There were warning signs about the possibility of ticks, and sure enough, I have two of them on me afterwards. No matter. It was a good couple of days.

Let the rushing creek put you to sleep!
-----------------------------------------
Renee B.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Awesome creekside tent camping!
Really cute campground just a short jaunt to the beautiful multi-level Catawba Falls hike in the Pisgah National Forest. We stayed in a tent site VERY close to a rushing creek of cool water. The sound definitely helped put me to sleep!
The tent sites all have a tent pad, camp ring, trash can, and picnic table provided. This site had a bit more privacy than others we saw and was on the other side of the property from the RV area, which also included a playground, bathrooms, showers, and small store. There are also small tiny cabins to rent out which is great if you had a large group and not everyone was down for roughin' it. Some tent sites were also close to shared pavilions which were very nice to use during the rainy weekend we experienced! We appreciated the hot showers since we were outside hiking all day but wanted to hit up some sights in Asheville that evening without looking too worn out.
The people who run the camp were extremely nice and helpful -- we arrived later than expected in a downpour thunderstorm and they were able to accommodate us and transfer us and our bags from the car to the site via golf cart.

How to Build Canoe Indian Ways
A canoe is a lightweight narrow boat, typically pointed at both ends and open on top, propelled by one or more seated or kneeling paddlers facing the direction of travel using a single-bladed paddle. In International Canoe Federation nomenclature used in some European countries such as the United Kingdom the term canoe refers to kayaks, while canoes are called Canadian canoes.
Canoes are used for racing, whitewater canoeing, touring and camping, freestyle, and general recreation. The intended use of the canoe dictates its hull shape and length and construction material.
Historically, canoes were dugouts or made of bark on a wood frame, but construction materials evolved to canvas on a wood frame, then to aluminum. Most modern canoes are made of molded plastic or composites such as fiberglass. Until the mid-1800s the canoe was an important means of transport for exploration and trade, but then transitioned to recreational or sporting use. Canoeing has been part of the Olympics since 1936. In places where the canoe played a key role in history, such as the northern United States, Canada, and New Zealand, the canoe remains an important theme in popular culture.
Canoes can be adapted to many purposes, for example with the addition of sails, outboard motors, and outriggers.
In the North American fur trade the Hudson s Bay Company s voyageurs used three types of canoe:
The rabaska or canot du maître was designed for the long haul from the St. Lawrence River to western Lake Superior. Its dimensions were: length approximately 11 m (35 ft), beam 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft), and height about 76 cm (30 in). It could carry 60 packs weighing 41 kg (90 lb), and 910 kg (2,000 lb) of provisions. With a crew of eight or ten (paddling or rowing), they could make three knots over calm waters. Four to six men could portage it, bottom up. Henry Schoolcraft declared it altogether one of the most eligible modes of conveyance that can be employed upon the lakes. Archibald McDonald of the Hudson s Bay Company wrote: I never heard of such a canoe being wrecked, or upset, or swamped ... they swam like ducks.
The canot du nord (French: canoe of the north ), a craft specially made and adapted for speedy travel, was the workhorse of the fur trade transportation system. About one-half the size of the Montreal canoe, it could carry about 35 packs weighing 41 kg (90 lb) and was manned by four to eight men. It could be carried by two men and was portaged in the upright position.
The express canoe or canot léger, was about 4.6 m (15 ft) long and were used to carry people, reports, and news.
Modern
Aluminum canoe
Plastic: Royalex is a composite material, comprising an outer layer of vinyl and hard acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic (ABS) and an inner layer of ABS foam, bonded by heat treatment. As a canoe material, Royalex lighter, more resistant to UV damage, is more rigid, and has greater structural memory than non-composite plastics such as polyethylene. Royalex canoes are, however, more expensive than aluminium canoes or canoes made from traditionally molded or roto-molded polyethylene hulls. It is heavier, and less suited for high-performance paddling than fiber-reinforced composites, such as fiberglass, kevlar, or graphite. Roto-molded polyethylene is a cheaper alternative to Royalex.
Fiber reinforced composites: Fiberglass is the most common material used in manufacturing canoes. Fiberglass is not expensive, can be molded to any shape, and is easy to repair. Kevlar is popular with paddlers looking for a light boat that will not be taken in whitewater. Fiberglass and Kevlar are strong but lack rigidity. Boats are built by draping the cloth on a mold, then impregnating it with a liquid resin. A gel coat on the outside gives a smoother appearance.
Polycarbonate: Lexan is used in transparent canoes.
Aluminum: Before the invention of fiberglass, this was the standard choice for whitewater canoeing. It is good value and very strong by weight.[21] This material was once more popular but is being replaced by modern lighter materials. It is tough, durable, and will take being dragged over the bottom very well , as it has no gel or polymer outer coating which would make it subject to abrasion. The hull does not degrade from long term exposure to sunlight, and extremes of hot and cold do not [affect] the material. It can dent, is difficult to repair, is noisy, can get stuck on underwater objects, and requires buoyancy chambers to assist in keeping the canoe afloat in a capsize.
Folding canoes usually consist of a PVC skin around an aluminum frame.
Inflatable: These contain no rigid frame members and can be deflated, folded and stored in a bag. The more durable types consist of an abrasion-resistant nylon or rubber outer shell, with separate PVC air chambers for the two side tubes and the floor.
