MEMPHS MUSIC TOURS VIETNAM IN APRIL 2015
INDIEGOGO GLOBAL CROWD FUNDING INITIATIVE
SET FOR SUNDAY, MARCH 1
February 26, 2015 In June 2014 Judy Peiser (Judy Peiser Productions, LLC) was selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam and approved by U.S. Embassy in Hanoi to represent the United States of America as part of the festivities to commemorate the 20th year of normalized relations between the United States of America and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
Judy Peiser Productions, LLC will produce the MEMPHIS MUSIC & CULTURE TOUR in Vietnam. The tour will include nine (9) shows for this historic event. As part of the U.S. Embassy’s Vietnam “people to people” outreach efforts, seven (7) of the nine (9) shows are FREE to the public.
Peiser said, As Co-Founder and Executive Producer of the Center for Southern Folklore for over 40 years I’ve learned from, presented and celebrated the music and culture of people from across Memphis Tennessee and the Delta Region of the United States. I believe music and dance bring people and communities together and look forward to showcasing Memphis’ talented performers on this international stage.
The tour is more than just great entertainment. It is all about connecting people. There will be dance instruction, harmonica playing, song writing, arts and crafts demonstrations and more. I believe the tour performances and creative sessions will provide a vehicle for artists and audiences to learn more about one another, as we share our music and culture one person at a time.
Vietnam has one of the youngest populations in all of Asia with most people less than 35 years old. They are immensely curious about America. Our Memphis Music & Culture Tour gives us the opportunity to create great relationships with the people of Vietnam.
On Sunday March 1, 2015, the Memphis Music & Culture Tour will launch our IndieGoGo Global Crowd Funding Initiative to spread the word about the tour and raise funds in the United States to enhance the Tour’s “people to people” Outreach Initiatives. Information about the tour and the Global Crowd Funding Initiative is at realmemphismusic.com. On March 1st our fundraising initiative Indiegogo.com will go live.
The tour’s IndieGoGo Global Crowd Funding Initiative is focused to raise money to reach more people in Vietnam and allow us to:
Produce signage and flyers in Vietnamese to enhance and promote FREE SHOWS and OUT REACH PROGRAMS.

Female Blues Singers Shine in Memphis
When the first blues recordings appeared in the early 1920s, women singers like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith were the stars. But over the years since then, men have come to dominate the blues scene. Women continue to sing the blues, though, and their talents were on display in Memphis, Tennessee recently at an event held outside the International Blues Challenge.
She sounds like she came right out of the Mississippi Delta, but singer Eleanor Tsaig and the Ori Naftaly band are from Israel, where she says blues music is starting to gain an audience.
The Jewish people have a lot to sing the blues about, Tsaig said.
She and the band members now live in Memphis and they came to the Center for Southern Folklore to perform at The Women in Blues Showcase.
We are all women, we are all sisters and it's the blues, you know, so it is just great, so much fun, Tsaig said.
This is their chance not to just celebrate blues, but the feminine aspect of blues... these are the young performers who have young ideas, young dreams, young goals, said Judy Peiser, director of the Center for Southern Folklore.
But event organizer Michele Seidman says she and co-organizer Terri Robbins want to counter the resistance they say exists to booking women in clubs and festivals.
We often have to fight harder to get the same respect as the guys, so we have to bring it harder, we bring in every bit of fire, passion and soul that we have go, she said.
Robbins says women have a lot to offer to blues music.
They bring guts, deep-roots soul, passion, I think, she said.
An example of that is Lady Rose, who came to the showcase from the eastern U.S. state of Maryland.
I put my heart and soul into what I am doing and I think it shows in what I sing and audiences really appreciate that, she said.
She says her biggest reward comes from fans who tell her she made them cry.
It really makes you feel good that you can touch someone, she said.
Lady Rose says it is important for young women to have successful female blues performers to emulate -- as they develop their own styles and reach down deep to express their own feelings.
SouthArk Upward Bound - Memphis
The SouthArk Upward Bound students took a trip to Memphis, TN. Here's a musical montage of the trip.
Blind Mississippi Morris and Brad Webb, 11/27/10
Performing at the Folklore Gift Store in the Center for Southern Folklore located at 123 S. Main St. Memphis, TN
To put it bluntly, Blind Mississippi Morris is one of the finest harmonica players on the planet. Hailing from Clarksdale - the stomping grounds for many of the bluesmen and women that emerged from Mississippi - Morris was well schooled by various members of his family including two cousins in the legendary country blues band, The Mississippi Sheiks, and an aunt who played with the gospel group, The Harps of Melody. Of course, being a cousin of iconic writer/producer/performer Willie Dixon doesn't hurt either.
Brad Webb wasn't born into the blues life the way his partner, Morris, was. But the first time he heard Furry Lewis playing guitar in a Memphis train station, something clicked and he's been playing the blues ever since. He spent much of his formative teenage years absorbing the guitar sounds of performers such as Johnny Winter, Bukka White, Fred McDowell and Lee Baker of Moloch. Brad devoted himself to becoming first a masterful guitar player and later a music producer while establishing himself as one of the best judges of talent in the region.
Morris and Brad have traveled many roads across the United States and Europe these past 20 years. Their shows are spontaneous, high energy affairs and a living reminder that the legacy of raw Mississippi Delta blues is very much alive.
born Sept. 4 1931 Wendell P. Whalum “We Shall Overcome”
*Wendell P. Whalum was born on this date in 1931. He was an African American gospel musician, educator and minister.
Wendell Phillips Whalum was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the third of five children of the late Thelma T. and H. David Whalum. When he was a very young boy, his musical talent, which was nurtured by his parents, was evident. He played for Avery Chapel A.M.E. Church, Central Baptist Church and Providence A.M.E. Church, all located in his hometown. In 1948, Whalum graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis and entered Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College in 1952, the Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1953, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Iowa in 1965. The University of Haiti conferred upon him the Doctor Honoris Causa in 1968.
After joining the faculty of Morehouse College in the fall of 1953, Dr. Whalum was appointed Director of the Morehouse College Glee Club, which earned national and international acclaim during his thirty-four years of leadership. In spite of numerous attractive offers of positions at major college and universities, he chose to remain at Morehouse where he spent his entire professional career and achieved an enviable record as a professor, director of both Band and Glee Club, Chairman of the Music Department, and Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Music. He was elected Faculty Representative to the Morehouse Board of Trustees and the National Alumni Association. He was also a Merrill Faculty Travel-Study Grant Abroad recipient and a Danforth Fellow.
Dr. Whalum achieved international recognition as teacher, organist, conductor, musicologist, arranger, composer, author and lecturer; and he traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. In Bonn, Germany, he studied the origin and the intricate construction of the pipe organ. He performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as an organ soloist in 1968, and he prepared the chorus for the world premier of the opera in 1972. During that same year, he took the Glee Club on a State Department tour of five countries in West and East Africa. He also prepared the Morehouse College Glee Club and the Atlanta University Center Community Chorus for numerous appearances with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and he conducted at major music centers, including the Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. Through his involvement in and contributions to the community, Dr. Whalum reached legendary fame. He organized and directed the Atlanta University Center Community Chorus and was co-director of the Morehouse-Spelman Chorus.
Because he was always extremely interested in quality church music, he accepted positions as organist-choirmaster for several Atlanta churches: Providence Baptist Church; Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, at which he was a member and trustee; Ebenezer Baptist Church; and Friendship Baptist Church, where he was serving at the time of his passing. He was constantly selected as a music consultant, as a member of evaluation committees, as a conductor or workshops, and as a lecturer throughout the United States and abroad. He held memberships on advisory boards of numerous music and civic organizations. Dr. Whalum created an immense variety of musical arrangements and published numerous articles and chapters in publications.
He was known more for his scholarship in the area of hymnody, Negro spirituals, and anthems. In 1972 he worked with the world premiere of Scott Joplin's opera Treemonisha. Dr. Whalum was the choral director for this production where many rehearsals took place at Morehouse College. The first orchestration of that work was done by Dr. T. J. Anderson who was the first African American artist in residence with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and on the music faculty at Morehouse College at that time.
Whalum was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, American Guild of Organists, National Humanities Faculty, National Society of Literature and the Arts, Music Educators National Conference, Georgia Folklore Society, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and the Intercollegiate Musical Council. He possessed the rare mixture of intellect, common sense and humility.

What To Do After A Memphis Car Accident?
The steps you take after a car accident can impact the outcome of your personal injury case and, more importantly, your recovery from your injuries. The first step, of course, is to call 911. Police will arrive to complete a report, which may play a role in your case. An ambulance will arrive. Accept medical attention, even if you feel okay at the time. Serious injuries are often overlooked at first because of adrenaline. Get immediate treatment and then follow up with your own doctor as necessary to ensure the fullest recovery possible.

If you are able to, gather information at the car accident scene. Ask the other driver for his or her information. Get the information of any witnesses. Take photographs of the scene.

Folk music includes both traditional music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th century folk revival. The term originated in the 19th century, but is often applied to music older than that. Some types of folk music are also called world music. Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted orally, music with unknown composers, or music performed by custom over a long period of time. It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles.
Starting in the mid-20th century, a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s. This form of music is sometimes called contemporary folk music or folk revival music to distinguish it from earlier folk forms.[1] Smaller, similar revivals have occurred elsewhere in the world at other times, but the term folk music has typically not been applied to the new music created during those revivals. This type of folk music also includes fusion genres such as folk rock, folk metal and others. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, in English it shares the same name, and it often shares the same performers and venues as traditional folk music.
