On this day 15 years ago, Russian police raided the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow and brought one of the most-deadly terrorist attacks in the country’s history to an end.
Today, the victims are being remembered outside the theater in Moscow.

Russian nationalist group disrupt Moscow screening of Ukraine conflict documentary

Members of a Russian nationalist group disrupted the Moscow screening of a documentary film about the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. As people tried to get in to see the film Bullet's Flight at the Artdocfest on December 10, activists with the South East Radical Block (SERB) movement blocked some from entering the cinema. Activists, who claim the film by Russian director Beata Bubenets is biased against Russia, then entered the screening hall as the film was being shown. Police halted the projection and evacuated the audience after the activists reportedly sprayed an acrid liquid in the hall. Fighting between Ukrainian government forces and Russia-backed separatists has killed more than 10,000 people in eastern Ukraine since April 2014. Russian news agencies said three members of the SERB movement were detained for the disruption at the film festival.

As proven in his recent documentaries Maidan, The Event, and The Trial, versatile Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa has become one of the contemporary masters of the found-footage documentary, using the form to study the nature of the Soviet regime and uncover its darkest legacies for contemporary and future generations. In State Funeral, he has uncovered a wealth of astonishing, mostly unseen archival footage of the “Great Farewell” in the days following the death of Joseph Stalin in March 1953: the teeming mass of mourners clogging Moscow’s Red Square, the speech announcing the hasty appointment of Malenkov, and finally Stalin’s burial in Lenin’s Tomb. While speeches about the Soviet Union’s unyielding fortitude and unity in the face of tragedy blare endlessly on speakers, and the pomp and ostentation grows increasingly surreal, the brilliantly edited and sound-designed State Funeral becomes an ever-relevant meditation on not just the horrors but also the absurdity of totalitarianism and the cult of personality.

If Moscow is the heart of Russia, then the Red Square is the heart of Moscow. It's definitely the first place the tourist must visit in Moscow. It looks absolutely amazing and beautiful even at winter time.
The Red Square surrounded by Moscow's Kremlin and Spasskaya Tower and Saint Basil's Cathedral, Historical State Museum and GUM department store. There also Mausoleum of Lenin, but it was totally hidden because of reconstruction.

Soviet Paradise: restorers re-discover the magnificence of Stalin-era architecture

VDNKh or the National Agricultural Exhibition Centre in Moscow was built in the late 1930s on the order of Stalin. It was meant to inspire Soviet people who lived a hard life of poverty and astonish the whole world. Its many pavilions were created in a multitude of architectural styles and elaborately decorated by the best artists and sculptors of the USSR. Many of its sights became iconic symbols of Moscow: Vera Mukhina's sculpture Worker and Kolkhoz Woman, the golden fountain, the space rocket. But the Soviet people had to pay a great price for this splendour. Several thousand convicts from the Gulag were used to construct VDNKh and its initial architect, Vyacheslav Oltarzhevsky, was arrested for political reasons and sent into exile for 5 years. After Stalin's death, the controversial feeling conveyed by the place led to its slow decay. During Khrushchev's rule, the opulence of many pavilions was hidden under aluminum panels while many parts of the park fell into disuse. Slowly but surely, the place meant to commemorate the country's strength turned into the exact opposite. But as time passes, the association of VDNKh as a reminder of an oppressive regime wanes. What remains is the admiration of its beauty and the sense of duty to preserve and restore this unique architectural complex. As a reward for its renovation, VDNKh continues to present its restorers with a wealth of hidden treasures.

Wooden boatbuilding - Faber Navalis: a film by Maurizio Borriello
Restoration of a wooden ship recognized as historical maritime treasure by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage.
Faber Navalis is Latin for Boatbuilder: words in an ancient language for describing an ancient profession.
It might seem just a video about the restoration of a wooden ship, but the actual subject of this documentary film is the state of mind of its shipwright: an Italian researcher in maritime ethnography who decided to learn boat building skills in order to understand the tacit knowledge hidden behind the construction of a wooden ship.
This film is an experiment in autobiographical ethnography in which the shipwhright is also the filmmaker, at the same time director and directed, both silent artisan and self-aware documentarist: a combination of aesthetics and ethnography which attempts to bring out an inner dimension that may only with difficulty, if it all, be rendered with propositional prose.
I’m an Italian boatbuilder, filmmaker and independent researcher in cultural anthropology.
My major areas of interest are coastal communities, boatbuiding technology and transmission of knowledge. My research interests focus on maritime cultures of the Indian Ocean from ethnographic and archaeological perspectives. This video is a chapter of my lifelong participant observation fieldwork.
After graduating in Asian and African Languages I moved to Indonesia where I had a teaching assignment at State University of Jakarta. In those years I carried out a research project in maritime ethnography on living boatbuilding traditions in S-E Asia collecting data on boat types, construction techniques, local response to the introduction of western technology and its social and cultural effects on the maritime communities. The practical aspects of this fieldwork experience made me realize the limits of my methodology. All those wooden vessels were built by eye guided by an intangible knowledge and I considered my blindness a problem of epistemological relevance. I felt I couldn't really understand the development of the technology and investigate the transmission of knowledge without acquiring practical boatbuilding skills. Since then much of my time has been spent in boatyards working as apprentice boatbuilder in Tsunami-hit countries, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean.
In the last four years I've been working as wooden ship restorer at the maritime museum in Norway. I am also designing an appropriate and versatile technology which attempts to improve traditional boatbuilding. I believe in the potential key role of the boats to reduce isolation improving rural access and mobility through the development of rural water transport.

The Battle of Moscow is the name given by Soviet historians to two periods of strategically significant fighting on a 600 km (370 mi) sector of the Eastern Front during World War II. It took place between October 1941 and January 1942. The Soviet defensive effort frustrated Hitler's attack on Moscow, capital of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the largest Soviet city. Moscow was one of the primary military and political objectives for Axis forces in their invasion of the Soviet Union.

Best Of Russia was founded by WINZAVOD, Centre for Contemporary Arts, in 2008.
WINZAVOD is the place with more than 200 years history. It used to be the winemaking enterprise back in 19th century, owned by Alexey Khludov, one of the richest people of Russia in those days.
But nowadays this is one of the most cultural places in Moscow. An old manufactories for winemaking now used as a territory for all kinds of contemporary arts of contemporary artists.
The WINZAVOD mission is to support contemporary art and artists, to introduce contemporary art to the widest possible audience, and to make art an integral part of contemporary life.
As the first and still only one independent English-language channel about daily life in Russia, we have been invited for Best Of Russia photo exhibition.
It is definitely another great view on the real life in today's Russia made in photographs with No Fake and No Bullshit.

Не знаю, как у вас, но всю свою жизнь я слышу от родителей: ну будь осторожен, ну не привлекай к себе лишнее внимание, не высовывайся – это очень опасно; и вообще мы простые люди – от нас ничего не зависит.
Мои родители – прекрасные люди, я безумно их люблю. Но они говорят все это десятилетиями - даже в тех ситуациях, где очевидно нарушается здравый смысл, где творится несправедливость и где мы точно правы.
Я всегда думал: откуда у старшего поколения этот страх, это стремление мазать все серой краской? Почему они боятся, что даже за минимальную смелость обязательно прилетит наказание? Моя гипотеза: этот страх зародился еще в прошлом веке и через поколения добрался до нас. Одно из мест, где этот страх появлялся, - Колыма.
Для максимального погружения мы проехали всю трассу Колыма. 2000 км тяжеленной дороги. 9 дней пути. И лютый, просто неправдоподобный мороз.
Как люди жили здесь тогда, во время репрессий? Как люди жили после? Как живут люди сейчас?
Все это нам было интересно и важно узнать нам. Все, что узнали, мы рассказываем вам.
