About six miles west of Larned, Kansas the Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves the 1859 military post of Fort Larned. On October 22, 1859 Captain George H. Stewart, commanding Company K of the First United States Cavalry, was sent out with his company to establish a mail escort station on the line of the Santa Fe Trail. On October 22nd he selected a site on the south bank of Pawnee Fork, eight miles from the mouth of the river and established a camp, which was first called the “Camp on Pawnee Fork.” The original structure was built of sod in the heart of Indian hunting grounds.
Today, the National Historic Site displays nine restored buildings, including officers’ quarters, barracks, a blacksmith shop, commissary and more and is one of the best examples of Indian Wars period forts. Many of the buildings include include period furnishings and the Visitor Center includes a museum, introductory slide show, library, rest rooms and a gift shop. A nature trail still provides views of wagon ruts left in the ground from the many pioneers who traveled the Santa Fe Trail.
Fort Larned Parade Ground
Throughout the summer months, various programs are available where historians in period clothing staff the buildings and provide demonstrations.

OKC police release video of March police shooting
Oklahoma City police on Thursday released video of an officer shooting a man armed with a knife in the backyard of a southeast Oklahoma City home.
About 6:05 p.m. on March 1, officers Andy Tschetter and Jose Gutierrez responded to 1 Corona Drive on a domestic violence call. In Tschetter’s body-worn camera video, a woman can be heard saying a man ran across the street after he had fought with a woman.
The man, later identified as Jonathan Boyd, 41, had ran to his neighbor’s house and was in the backyard. Tschetter and Guitierrez walked to the house with the homeowner and unlocked a gate to the backyard.
The video shows Boyd coming around a corner with his armed raised and an object in his hand, which police said was a knife.
Pay It 4Ward: “You’ve touched so many lives,” Oklahoma woman praised for advocating...
OKLAHOMA - In a world of sound, can you imagine living in silence?
Iris Wilson's daughter became deaf as an infant. A side effect of an illness.
In fighting for her daughter, Iris Wilson made the world better for hundreds in the metro who suffered hearing problems.
35 years ago, she helped found the Central Oklahoma Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Through that organization, she helped mainstream deaf children into public schools.
She was an advocate for their problems and concerns.
She served as an interpreter during her 34 years as a nurse at Deaconess Hospital.
And her work for the deaf was just the beginning. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, The Food Bank, and drove the blind on their errands.
She was a woman whose heart was geared to helping.
That's why Sylvia Jones nominated Wilson for Pay It 4Ward.
35 years ago, you started Central Oklahoma Association for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. In those 35 years you've touched so many lives, especially the deaf and hearing impaired and you're just a wonderful person. Jones said.
With decades of caring behind Wilson, she doesn't plan to stop any time soon.
Just look around you and see what the needs are and don't be afraid to step out and do something, Wilson said.
Pay It 4Ward is sponsored by First Fidelity Bank.
