STORYLINE:
Fresh from his summit with U-S President George W. Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Yugoslavia on Saturday evening in a sign of support for its new, pro-democracy government.
Putin's trip- described as 'a short working visit' - will included talks with new Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica, who spearheaded a pro-democracy movement that led to Slobodan Milosevic's ouster in October.
Moscow has pledged to help Yugoslavia repair destruction from the 1999 NATO air campaign and to provide natural gas.
That would be a boost to Kostunica's efforts to improve Yugoslavs' living conditions, which have long been in decline due to the international sanctions imposed to punish Belgrade for its role in inciting Balkan wars of the 1990s.
Despite historic ties between Russians and Serbs, Putin is the first Russian president to visit Yugoslavia since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev toured the old Yugoslav federation, then consisting of six republics, in 1988.
Although Russia has cultural, religious and historic ties to Yugoslavia's Serbian and Montenegrin population, it was critical of former president Milosevic's campaign against ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.
Still, Russia strongly opposed NATO's bombing campaign against Yugoslavia, now consisting of Serbia and Montenegro, over Kosovo and has been eager to play a role in settling that and other conflicts in the Balkans.
Putin and Kostunica were to address reporters on Sunday morning, after which the Russian president was to return to Moscow.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov is scheduled to visit a Russian army contingent serving with NATO-led troops in the Serbian province of Kosovo.
Russia has been pushing for the NATO-led peacekeepers to do more to disarm ethnic Albanian extremists in the Serbian province of Kosovo, who have also contributed to clashes with government troops in neighbouring Macedonia.
Putin flew to Belgrade after his first summit meeting with Bush, held in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana.
Slovenia was a Yugoslav republic before it split from the federation after a brief war in 1991.
Russian recognition of Kostunica's election victory led to Milosevic conceding defeat in October and a peaceful transition of power.
Milosevic is now in prison on charges of corruption and abuse of power during his 13-year
tenure.

STORYLINE
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Moscow on Wednesday for an official two-day visit to Russia.
Abbas is expected to meet with both President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev during his stay, according to a Russian state news agency.
This will Abbas' tenth visit to Russia and talks are expect to centre around Russo-Palestinian relations, Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations and the broader situation in the Middle East and North Africa.
Russia is an important player in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in part because it is a member of the so-called 'Quartet of Mediators' that also includes the United States, the European Union and the United Nations.
Of the four, Russia is seen as the most sympathetic to the Palestinians but has little sway over the group because the US has traditionally claimed the dominant role in mediating between Israelis and the Palestinians.
The Palestinians have refused to negotiate with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while he continues to build Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.
