Cerritos (Spanish for little hills), formerly named Dairy Valley because of the preponderance of dairy farms in the area, is an affluent suburban city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, and is one of several cities that constitute the Gateway Cities of southeast Los Angeles County. It was incorporated on April 24, 1956. As of the 2010 census, the population was 49,041.[6] It is part of the Los Angeles–Long Beach–Anaheim, California Metropolitan Statistical Area designated by the Office of Management and Budget.

Cerritos was originally inhabited by Native Americans belonging to the Tongva (or People of the Earth). Later, the Tongva would be renamed the Gabrieleños by the Spanish settlers after the nearby Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. The Gabrieleños were the largest group of Southern California Indians as well as the most developed in the region.[8] The Gabrieleños lived off the land, deriving food from the animals or plants that could be gathered, snared, or hunted, and grinding acorns as a staple.[8]
Beginning in the late 15th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the New World and worked their way to the California coast in 1542. The colonization process included civilizing the native populations in California by means of establishing various missions. Soon afterwards, a town called El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula (Los Angeles today) would be founded and prosper with the aid of subjects from New Spain and Native American labor.[8]
One soldier, José Manuel Nieto, was granted a large plot of land by the Spanish King Carlos III, which he named Rancho Los Nietos. It covered 300,000 acres (1,200 km2) of what are today the cities of Cerritos, Long Beach, Lakewood, Downey, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs, part of Whittier, Huntington Beach, Buena Park, and Garden Grove.[8]
The rancho was divided five ways among Nieto's heirs during the nationalization of church property by the Mexican government, with Juan José Nieto retaining the largest plot called Rancho Los Coyotes. Nieto called the area of Rancho Los Coyotes, where Cerritos is located today, cerritos or little hills although no natural hills exist in modern-day Cerritos.

Former Philippines President Fidel V. Ramos visited the Cerritos Library on Monday night as he continued a 17-day trip to the United States to promote his biography Trustee of the Nation.
Ramos talked openly and emotionally about the People's Revolution that gripped the island nation nearly a generation ago, and about his upbringing as a child and about the challenges that lie ahead throughout the Southeast Asian region.
Ramos served as President of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998 and is remembered for helping revive the country's economy through the mid 1990s.
Several area elected officials, influential members of the greater Southern California Filipino-American community packed the Skylight Room at the Cerritos Civic Center to attend the lecture, and book unveiling.

Why Did You Approve a Statue of Gandhi Activist Asks California City
Speaking at the September 12, 2013 city council meeting in Cerritos, CA, journalist Pieter Friedrich raied his voice in opposition to the installation of a statue of Mohandas Gandhi, stating:
Sometimes the truth requires standing the facts you think you know on their head.
For instance, Giovanni Palatucci, a Fascist police officer from WWII-era Italy who was once credited as the “Italian Schindler” is now being repudiated by Italians as an abuser of Jews. The Anti-Defamation League and US Holocaust Memorial Museum have both reversed their praise of Palatucci.
It’s not too late to change your mind. Propaganda has been exposed before. Why did you approve a statue of Gandhi?
The City of Cerritos notes that the Cerritos Gandhi statue is located on private property. It is. But this whole affair began because the City of Cerritos, according to official correspondence from Mayor Bruce Barrows, “required [the property owner] to provide a statue or monetary contribution as a part of the Art In Public Places Program, when their development was approved.”
Do you only respect private property rights when asked to take responsibility for controversy? Where was the respect for private property rights when demanding “a statue or monetary contribution” before the property owner could develop?
Where was the discernment?
Gandhi was a Hindu religious preacher who said: “Caste is necessary for Christians and Muslims as it has been necessary for Hinduism, and has been its saving grace.”
Gandhi was an advocate of racial segregation of blacks in pre-apartheid South Africa.
Gandhi was also a man who, in his late 70s, forced his 18-year-old grandniece Manu and his 17-year-old grandniece Abha to sleep naked with him on a nightly basis to “test” his commitment to celibacy. In one of the world's premier examples of twisted logic, Gandhi asked: “If I don’t let Manu sleep with me, though I regard it as essential that she should, wouldn’t that be a sign of weakness in me?” Today, Gandhi would be tossed in prison if caught doing such a thing in Cerritos.
Perhaps most compelling is that Gandhi never once visited the United States of America. He has no ties to this country whatsoever.
Have you heard of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar? He was a so-called Untouchable from India — the lowest of the low in the Hindu caste system which has poisonously divided that sub-continent's society for centuries.
He arrived in America in 1913 to study at Columbia University. While in the U.S., Dr. Ambedkar was molded by American freedom movements. He saw blacks enduring the same mental and physical tortures which are still, to this very day, inflicted upon Untouchables for no reason but the circumstances of birth.
Upon his return to India, Dr. Ambedkar immediately launched a movement to uplift the Untouchables. On August 21, 1927, he organized 40,000 people from the Maharashtra in launching the Mahad Talab Morcha — a movement demanding recognition of the equal rights of all to drink water from public places.
Have you heard of Kartar Singh Sarabha? A young South Asian who landed in the Port of San Francisco in 1912, he immediately settled into life in California and enrolled at U.C. Berkeley to study chemistry.
However, knowledge of the situation in his country of origin disturbed him. The British were brutally occupying India and Sarabha said: “Indians are citizens of a slave country.”
Inspired by the American tradition of freedom of the press, Sarabha founded the first Punjabi-language newspaper in the United States — Ghadar. In fact, this talented young man published in six languages total. The printing press he personally operated is preserved in Stockton, CA.
Once again inspired by stories of our nation's revolutionary founders, who treasured the principles of liberty and self-government, Sarabha decided to return to India in 1914 to launch India's independence movement. At the age of 19, this young Californian was arrested by the British and hung by the neck until dead because he loved America’s tradition of freedom.
So. These are men worth honoring. These are people connected to America. Most importantly, these are people who never campaigned for racial segregation, praised Hitler, or sexually abused their female relatives. A little discernment may have been helpful in considering which South Asian to honor with a statue.
Mayor Barrows also wrote: “The Fine Arts and Historical Commission and the City Council received and approved the statue.”
Well, Mr. Mayor, what prevents you from changing your mind?

A Look Inside The Central Los Angeles Public Library
The historic Central Library Goodhue building was constructed in 1926 and is a Downtown Los Angeles landmark. The Richard Riordan Central Library complex is the third largest public library in the United States in terms of book and periodical holdings. Originally named the Central Library, the building was first renamed in honor of the longtime president of the Board of Library Commissioners and President of the University of Southern California, Rufus B. von KleinSmid. The new wing of Central Library, completed in 1993, was named in honor of former mayor Tom Bradley. The complex (i.e., the original Goodhue building and the Bradley wing) was subsequently renamed in 2001 for former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, as the Richard Riordan Central Library.
The Central Library was extensively renovated and expanded in a Modernist/Beaux-Arts architecture, according to Norman Pfeiffer, the principal architect of the renovation by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates from 1988 through 1993. It included an enormous, eight-story atrium wing dedicated to former mayor Tom Bradley. Now, the library contains an area of 538,000 square feet, and has nearly 89 miles of shelves and seating for over 1,400 people.
