Text description provided by the architects. In Beijing is not all about Olympics. The National Grand Theater, by Paul Andreu is a magnificent and gigantic project finished a few months ago, complementing all the infrastructure been built for the big sports event.
The building is situated in the heart of Beijing on Chang An Avenue next to the Great Hall of the People and about 500 meters from Tian An Men Square and the Forbidden City.
It is a curved building, with a total surface area of 149,500 square meters, that emerges like an island at the center of a lake. The titanium shell is in the shape of a super ellipsoid with a maximum span of 213 meters, a minimum span of 144 meters and a height of 46 meters). It is divided in two by a curved glass covering, 100 meters wide at the base.
During the day, light flows through the glass roof into the building. At night, the movements within can be seen from outside. The building houses three performance auditoriums - a 2,416-seat opera house, a 2,017 seat concert hall and a 1,040 theatre - as well as art and exhibition spaces opened to a wide public and integrated into the city.

TEAHOUSE CHAT MAKES CHINA GIGGLE
For the first time a troop of Taiwanese performers have brought their unique sense of humour to theatre audiences in Beijing with a play entitled 'Millennium Teahouse.'
The production at the Chang'an Grand theatre opened to packed audiences in the capital. It presents a light hearted look at Chinese history and the social changes which have occurred from ancient times to emergence of modern China.
The performance steers clear of sensitive political issues but plays heavily on social satire.
Stan Lai from Taiwan, whose works have been described as the most exciting theatre in the Chinese-speaking world by the Far Eastern Economic Review, is the director and writer.
Mr. Lai and his actors all believe wholeheartedly in cultural diplomacy. They say that the exchanges between the divided nations of Taiwan and China form a bridge between people separated by decades of hostility.
Culture exchanges can be a very important bridge in the relations across Taiwan strait. Our actors on the stage will feel very close with the mainland audience in the theatre through our performances on the stage in an artistic atmosphere, said Lai.
Lai is noted for have created a new art form called 'Xiang-sheng Drama'. It fuses theatrical drama with the traditional Chinese folk art of 'Xiang-sheng,' a conversation between two or more men, aiming at making people laugh. More importantly, the humour always contains satire on social issues.
The story of 'Millennium Teahouse' starts in the late Qing Dynasty, when China was being invaded by the Western Powers. But as the talk show goes on in an old teahouse, many controversial social issues of modern society are commented upon.
The drama will be also on show in Shanghai from December 6 to 9.

Cost: € 300 million.The National Centre For The Performing Arts, which covers 150,000 square meters is located on Chang'an Avenue in Beijing. The Great Hall of the People between the National Grand Theater in Tiananmen Square. The building consists of an opera house (2416 seats), a concert hall (2017 seats) and two theaters (one of 1040 seats) included in a titanium and glass shell which houses the public space . The glass opens the building like a curtain that is taken away, shows that it contains: theaters, walking areas and exposure. The titanium protects and covers, creates shadow areas more secret. The cultural complex is designed as a city of theaters, an island in a transparent artificial body of water surrounded by a new urban park.
2018 China: Beijing - National Centre for the Performing Arts
With the Great Hall of the People to its east, the National Centre for the Performing Arts is located on Chang'an Avenue, Beijing. The NCPA, originally named National Grand Theater, was designed by French architect Paul Andrew. The main building contains three performing venues: the Opera House, the Concert Hall, and the Theater. In addition, the center has underwater corridors, an underground garage, an artificial lake and the green space. It covers an area of about 29 acres (about 12 hectares). The whole project started from December 2001. After more than 5 years' construction, it was finally completed in September, 2007. Now it is believed to be the deepest architecture in Beijing with the deepest point being -106.6 feet (-32.5 meters), equivalent to the height of a 10-floor building. The National Centre for the Performing Arts presents a sharp contrast to its surroundings with its oval exterior, making it very eye-catching.
Symphonies, dance shows, ballets, dramas, operas and other kinds of performances are frequently staged in the National Centre of the Performing Arts. STORYLINE:
Taiwanese performers brought their unique sense of humour to Beijing audiences for the first time on Thursday.
The acting troupe made the landmark journey across the Taiwan Straits to perform their play 'Millennium Teahouse' at the esteemed Chang'an Grand Theatre in the Chinese capital.
This Mandarin production presents a light-hearted look at Chinese history and the social changes which have occurred from ancient times to emergence of modern China.
But the performance steers clear of sensitive political issues, playing heavily instead on social satire.
The wider implications of being able to perform on the mainland are however not lost on Taiwanese playwright-director Stan Lai, whose works have been described as some of the most exciting in the Chinese-speaking world.
Lai has married drama with the traditional Chinese folk art of Xiang-Sheng, which uses seemingly casual conversation between two or more men to provoke laughter.
Most importantly, the humour always contains satire on social issues.
The play is the latest in Taiwan's Xiang-Sheng Drama series, which began in 1985 and has since blossomed.
The story of Millennium Teahouse starts in the late Qing Dynasty, when China was being invaded by the Western Powers.
But as the characters talk away in an old teahouse, many controversial, social issues are brought under the spotlight.
Lai and his actors all believe that cultural exchanges between the island of Taiwan and mainland China can form a bridge between people on both sides of Straits, following decades of hostility.
The drama will transfer to Shanghai in early December.

The friendship art delegation gave performances at the State Grand Theatre in Beijing
The friendship art delegation of the DPRK is visiting the People's Republic of China from January 23, further strengthening the ties of friendship and unity between the two parties and the two countries.
The delegation has received a warm hospitality from the Chinese party, government and people since its arrival at Dandong Railway Station, border station of China.
It arrived in Beijing on the morning of January 24.
It was warmly greeted at Beijing Railway Station by Song Tao, head of the International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and other cadres of the department and officials concerned.

Beijing Dashilan or Dashilar Street / 大栅栏 / 大柵欄 (Slideshow)
Beijing Dashilan or Dashilar Street / 大栅栏 / 大柵欄 is a famous business street outside Qianmen in Beijing, China. Now the term Dashilanr is also used to refer to the area comprising, besides Dashilanr itself, also the Langfang Toutiao Lane, Liangshidian Street and Meishi Street.
In 1488, in order to secure the public safety of the capital, the central government built wooden fences at all the entrances to the streets and lanes in Beijing. The fence was accomplished with contributions from the local residents, and the total number of the fences was more than 1,700 by the end of the Qing dynasty. Among them, the Langfang Sitiao street’s fence was funded by the merchants. For this reason, the fence was extremely large and thus got the name Dashilanr. With the passage of time, Dashilanr gradually became the formal name of the street replacing Langfang Sitiao.
For centuries, the traditional commercial street Dashilanr has held quite a few Lao zihaos which are well-known both at China and abroad. The Lao zihaos, such as Tongrentang (Chinese: 同仁堂; pinyin: Tóngréntáng) Chinese herbal medicine store, Rui Fu Xiang (Chinese: 瑞蚨祥; pinyin: ruìfúxiáng) silk store, Ma Ju Yuan (Chinese: 马聚元; pinyin: Mǎjùyuán) hat store, Nei Lian Sheng (Chinese: 内联升; pinyin: Neìliánshéng) shoe store, Zhang Yi Yuan (Chinese: 张一元; pinyin: Zhāngyīyuán) tea shop, and Liu Bi Ju (Chinese: 六必居; pinyin: Liùbìjū) pickle shop, as well as Yi Pin Zhai (Chinese: 一品斋; pinyin: Yīpǐnzhāi), Bu Ying Zhai (Chinese: 步瀛斋; pinyin: Bùyíngzhāi), Ju Shun He (Chinese: 聚顺和; pinyin: Jùshùnhé), Chang Sheng Kui (Chinese: 长盛魁; pinyin: Chángshèngkuí), are over 100 years old.
There once was a saying in Beijing, Wear the hats of Ma Ju Yuan, stand in the shoes of Nei Lian Sheng, wear the clothes of Ba Da Xiang, and take the money of Si Da Heng Banks. Ma Ju Yuan, Nei Lian Sheng, Ba Da Xiang (Chinese: 八大祥; pinyin: Bādàxiáng) and Si Da Heng (Chinese: 四大恒; pinyin: Sìdàhéng) are all stores located in Dashilanr that are taken as the symbols of wealth.
Dashilanr was also the former entertainment center of Beijing apart from the commercial center. There were five grand Chinese opera theaters in Dashilanr – Qingle Yuan (Chinese: 庆乐园; pinyin: Qìnglèyuán), Sanqing Yuan (Chinese: 三庆园; pinyin: Sānqìngyuán), Guangde Lou (Chinese: 广德楼; pinyin: Guǎngdélóu), Guanghe Yuan (Chinese: 广和园; pinyin: Guǎnghéyuán), Tongle Yuan (Chinese: 同乐园; pinyin: Tónglèyuán); the first movie theater in Beijing, Daguan Lou (Chinese: 大观楼; pinyin: Dàguānlóu), also situated there.
