Our 6th day of our trip. we left West Yellowstone, entered into Yellowstone and exited the south entrance passing through the John D. Rockefeller Parkway before finally entering into Grand Teton National Park. Starting from the north we reached the northern end of Jackson Lake view the mountain range in a some what parallel perspective. Continuing down the highway we reached numerous overlooks in front of the beautiful Teton mountain range. The most unique of those stops, was Mormon Row where a number of old homes and barns still stand with the Tetons set a perfect backdrop. Here you will also find the infamous Moulton Barn also. Continuing south, we finally reached the little western town of Jackson, Wyoming for dinner and a nice night our for drinks at a cowboy bar and some cowboy dancing.
Next day, we drove up to Jackson Hole Ski Resort. At the time it was closed but was a good stop to see what the hype is all about. We attempted to hike in the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve but after .5 miles our trail became covered in snow. Heading further north we made stops at the Chapel of the Transfiguration, an old community, Jenny Lake and a gravel beach before making turn back south back to Jackson for dinner.
Our last day of our whole trip, we took advantage of an early morning for a nice horseback riding venture miles out from Jackson for a last view of the Teton Mountain Range. From there, we set off For Idaho Falls, bringing us great memories of an amazing trip to two beautiful national Parks.

Moose at Menor's Ferry in Teton National Park
June 17, 2008. This Moose at Menor's Ferry in Teton National Park trapped us in old Maud Noble's cabin for about 20 minutes while he munched all the surrounding flowers. The video is wavy because most of it was shot through the old glass windows of the cabin. Near the beginning of the recording, when the moose runs, it's because a lady was trying to get photos & got too close, so the park ranger yelled & clapped to get the moose to run the other way so the photographer lady could run towards him. Thankfully it worked. The ranger later explained that more people are seriously hurt by moose each year than grizzlies, because people get too close to the moose. Also, the moose have begun frequenting people places because they've learned that grizzlies don't like people places, so they're safer!

Teton Pass [from Symphony No. 1 The Grand Tetons]
Symphony No. 1 “The Grand Tetons” // Mvt. 1: “Teton Pass” (2016)
Composed by Thomas Little // Performed by the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Christopher James Lees
April 25th, 2017 // Crawford Hall // UNC School of the Arts // Winston-Salem, NC
My family and I have a habit of going on long cross-country road trips in the summers, and on June 1st, 2013, we found ourselves en route to Grand Teton National Park in northwest Wyoming. While I’ve been fortunate enough to go to a great many beautiful places, the sights and experiences of that day have stuck with me ever since, and when it came time to write a a large orchestral piece, it served as an obvious point of inspiration. The four movements—“Teton Pass,” “Chapel of the Transfiguration,” “Moose,” and “Oxbow Bend”—all evoke different aspects of my time in what I truly believe to be America’s most underrated National Park.
This movement, “Teton Pass,” is named after a hazardous road that serves as the fastest route from Idaho Falls to Jackson, WY. The movement—and piece—opens by introducing fragmented melodies between statements of a rumbling engine noise as provided by the cellos and basses. The struggle up the mountain continues as the music opens up, but eventually settles down as it evokes the distant serenity of the Teton range. The middle section of the movement is a tone-poem evoking the experience of being at the top, but eventually the engine starts up again for the terrifying downhill journey. With the brass chorale at the end, it signals the arrival, and then there is a return to some of the fragmented tone-colors from the beginning before ending quietly with metal percussion and string harmonics.
Special thanks to Dr. Rothkopf for putting up with the 100+ pages of manuscript I had at the beginning of the academic year and helping me whittle the piece down to its best possible incarnation, to Dr. Dillon and Mr. Frazelle for their insight and support when the movement was the focus of my composition jury, to Mr. Beck for his advice on mallets, to the people at my local Office Depot who now know how to bind 11x17 paper because of this piece, and—of course—to Maestro Lees and the entire UNCSA Symphony Orchestra for their ability to put together a difficult premiere in just five short rehearsals.
The high-quality version of this piece can be found on my Bandcamp:

Grand Tetons Heron Pond Hike
A morning hike from Coulter Bay on Jackson Lake to Heron Pond and Swan Lake, Grand Teton National Park led us to some beaver ponds with lodges, but we didn't spot any beavers.
It's a bit shakey video, but works well for treadmill exercise watching.
