Salvestrin Winery - St. Helena, California
Salvestrin Winery is a family-owned winery. Since 1932, the Salvestrin family has been in the business of growing grapes and selling them to nearby wineries from their St. Helena estate vineyard. Rich Salvestrin, a third-generation family member, decided it was due time that the family begin making wine from their fabulous vineyards that were winning awards for their client wineries. Rich enrolled in the Fresno State University wine program and, shortly after completion of his studies, began making Salvestrin wine. The first vintage was released in 1994.

ALL MY FAVORITE THINGS
___
It's finally starting to feel like spring which means two things - 1. I def need to switch out my moisturizer to one with a higher SPF and 2. Spring releases of wines are in full flux and so are the parties/tastings! It's a busy season for a sommelier here in Napa Valley, but it's also a time for exploration and valuable insight. Today was just one of those days that seemed too good to be true. I started my day on the early side at a Library Masterclass at Charles Krug - the oldest winery in Napa Valley. Established in 1861, the winery was purchased by the Mondavi family in 1943 and passed down to the two brothers Robert and Peter Sr. After Robert left to start his own winery in Oakville, Peter Sr. acquired full ownership and it has remained in his family since. Peter Mondavi Jr. and his brother Marc now spearhead the operation, but it is very much a family affair with the children acting as brand ambassadors, sales managers, and board members.
Peter Mondavi Jr. speaks a bit about some of the older wines they pulled from the library which include the 1964, 1966, 1974, 1983, 1991, 1998, 2003, and the newly released 2015. He discusses winemaking techniques and the state of the vineyards back then. As he laments about the various viruses that plagued them and left them unable to reach a desired sugar level many brix lower than what we achieve today, we discover a stylistic shift from alcohol levels in the 2015. The wines today reflect a desire to produce a riper, more dense style more closely associated with the modern palate than the restrained low alcohol wines of the 60's and 70's.

Whitehall Lane : California Wine with Tony
Whitehall Land Winery in Rutherford, started in 1979, is a family-owned winery with 44 hectares of land. In the mid-19th century, Napa Valley settlers cultivated the land and made it ideal for winemaking.
And in 1993, the Leonardini Family of San Francisco took over the Whitehall Lane Estate. The winery, which uses state-of-the-art technology, ships 45,000 cases a year, mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

OK rods, is there any bigger water on this property than what we just found?
AS CALIFORNIA FACES A RECORD DROUGHT, MANY FARMERS ARE HIRING DOWSERS LIKE MONDAVI TO FIND WATER UNDERGROUND.
SOUBDBITE: Marc Mondavi, co-owner of Charles Krug Winery:
I did four last week. I've got six to do this week. So I'm keeping very busy with this drought.
WATER WITCHES SAY THE DIVINING RODS ARE MOVED BY AN ENERGY IN THE PRACTITIONER'S BODY THAT SENSES THE PRESENCE OF WATER.
SOUNDBITE: Marc Mondavi, co-owner of Charles Krug Winery:
There's no science behind this. You talk to a scientist and he's going to say, 'You're smoking crack.' But you know, it works.
MONDAVI SAYS HE'S BEEN WATER WITCHING FOR 40 YEARS AND HAS HELPED LOCATE MORE THAN 100 WELLS. HE EVEN STARTED A WINE LABEL CALLED THE DIVINING ROD.
SOUNDBITE: Angie Sculatti, wine educator, Charles Krug Winery:
I've witnessed Marc in action, and I've seen the power of the rods crossing, and I've seen him find water. So I am definitely a firm believer.
BUT GEOLOGISTS SAY DOWSING ONLY APPEARS TO WORK BECAUSE YOU CAN FIND AT LEAST SOME WATER ALMOST ANYWHERE YOU DRILL.
SOUNDBITE: Tom Ballard, Hydrogeologist, Taber Consultants:
What it boils down to is water-witching makes for a good show. I've seen it done. I thought it was fun. I don't believe in it, but it's still fun.
BUT THE DROUGHT IS NO LAUGHING MATTER FOR CALIFORNIA'S FARMERS -- WHO ARE CUTTING CROP PRODUCTION BECAUSE WATER IS IN SHORT SUPPLY.
SOUNDBITE: Charles Alpers, USGS California Water Science Center:
Everyone's grocery bills might go up if the farmers continue to have no water. They're just not going to be able to plant certain crops this year.
THAT'S WHY SOME FARMERS ARE HOPING THIS ANCIENT TECHNIQUE WILL HELP EASE A MODERN-DAY CRISIS.
