Charlevoix Michigan Driving Tour 2017
Charlevoix (/ˈʃɑːrləvɔɪ/ SHARL-ə-voy) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,513 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Charlevoix County.
Charlevoix Township is a separate municipal entity that completely surrounds the city and has a year-round population of 1,697. Typical of Northern Michigan towns, Charlevoix has a much higher seasonal tourist population in the summer.
The city is situated between Lake Michigan and the western end of Lake Charlevoix, which drains into Lake Michigan through the short Round Lake/Pine River complex in the heart of downtown Charlevoix. The Charlevoix South Pier Light Station marks the opening of the channel onto Lake Michigan. Charlevoix's Round Lake has been called the best natural harbor on Lake Michigan. The only way to get from Lake Michigan to East Jordan, Boyne City and other sites on Lake Charlevoix by boat is via Charlevoix. As a result, much commercial, industrial, and recreational boat traffic passes through Charlevoix.
Charlevoix is named after Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a French explorer who travelled the Great Lakes and was said to have stayed the night on Fisherman's Island during a harsh storm. During this time Native Americans were thought to have lived in the Pine River valley. The Odawa and Ojibwe lived throughout northern Michigan prior to European colonization.

Michigan Shoreline Lighthouses
In this video of Michigan Lighthouse we go around the perimeter of the state starting with the east coast to the northern coast and down the west coast. We used a Phantom 4 Pro V2 which is available here We also used a goPro Hero 6 available here We mounted the Go Pro with Ram Mounts.
This is by no means a complete tour of lighthouses in Michigan as there are 124 remaining lighthouses. In this video we shot 10 of the 13 major lighthouses along the shoreline. We skipped Tthe two near Traverse City (Grand Traverse & Old Mission), simply because it was several miles up a island to get to them and did not have the time. We also skipped Grand Haven South Pierhead Inner Light because it was raining when we drove thorough there.
Although the video starts with a sunrise over the Mackinac Bridge, we started the tour of lighthouse on the south eastern coast in Port Huron, Fort Gratiot Lighthouse which as a 1829 military fort. On the drive up the coast between Fort Gratiot & Sturgeon Point was a great Mexicon Food Trailer, Tony's Tacos, Authentic Mexican Food, in Standish, MI. I highly reccomend stopping there, sure beats the typical fast food chains.
Some of our favorites were Big Sable Point & Little Sable Point, both over 100 feet and on the pristine part of the Beach. It is a 2 mile walk to Big Sable Point, as you'll see us in the video. Also the drive from Port Betsie to Big Sable Point was inpressive. Our GPS took us though some of the dirt roads of truly Pure Michigan. At times I wondered if my GPS was guiding me right, but it was. It was an enjoyable ride as you'll see my Toy Poodle, Bella enjoying the scenery as well.
We started and eneded with a sunset at Mackinaw City on the northern coast. We will be posting a separate video showing Mackinac City. This is a great area to spend a weekend, plenty of hotels. It has 2 lighthouses. The most impressive of the two lighthouses is Old Mackinac Point which is part of Historic Colonial Michilimackinac. The other Lighthouse in Mackinac City is McGulpin Point which was about 3 miles away from the main downtown area of Mackinac City, and kind of secluded in a forest.
The other Lighthouses on east coast we feature are 40 Mile Point Lighthouse in Rogers City and the New Presque Isle and Old Presque Isle Lighthouse. Currenlty the Old Presque Isle is not open to the public. The Sturgeon Point Lighthouse is very similiar to the New Presque Isle Lighthouse. The other we feature on the west coast, probably technically is not big enough to be considered a lighthouse is the Charlevoix South Pier Light Station.

Restoration of the South Pier Lighthouse - South Haven Michigan
This restoration project was sponsored by the Historical Association of South Haven - HASH - and funded by a community-wide Save the Light initiative which raised $300,000.
The project was also supported by a $60,000 grant from the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program.
In September, workers removed an estimated 10 coats of paint, made repairs and re-painted it with about 52 gallons of its signature red paint while the interior restoration was completed this past spring.
Purchase a commemorative brick to support maintenance of the lighthouse @
A formal re-dedication of the lighthouse will be held next spring.

My mother and I decided to head to Charlevoix, MI.
We were told to visit a place called 'Castle Farms' because it was a neat place. We didn't look it up on google or even see what it was all about. We wrote down the address and looked it up on the GPS. We had no clue what this place was or what to expect. I didn't expect a castle to be there, that's for sure - I just figured it was a random term they used to brand themselves.
Turned out to be a really neat place. Beautiful architecture, landscaping, and also many antiques to browse through. Totally worth the visit!
We also briefly drove past the Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix. An architect by the name of Earl Young created a series of homes in the area. All of the locals told us that it was a 'must-see'. We never stopped or went inside or anything (which it something that you can do).
Lastly, we visited the Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse. Awesome place to visit. The water around the lighthouse was stunningly clear. I have never seen anything so clear! Definitely worth the stop, if you are in the area. Also, there is a beach right there to play in during the summer months.
