Stealing Charlie Chaplin
In 1978, three months after the death of comedy icon, Charlie Chaplin, his body disappeared from its grave in Corsier-Sur-Vevey, Switzerland. Examining Magistrate, Jean-Daniel Tenthorey and the Swiss Police had no clues to follow only ridiculous rumours. It would be quite some time before the robbers would eventually contact the family asking for half a million Swiss Francs. After being denied by the family, the robbers would lower the amount a number of times, before escalating threats of violence against the family. After a number of twists and turns, the robbers got careless and Tenthorey realised that the phone calls were all coming from the Vevey region. Arranging for the robbers to call at a certain time, the police surveyed all the phone booths in Vevey and subsequently caught the robbers. Confessing to the crime, the body was recovered from its reburial in a field a mere 20kms from Chaplin’s home. The two robbers were convicted of disturbing the peace of the dead and trying to extract a ransom.

Chaplin spent the last years of his life in Switzerland with his fourth wife Oona, and died at his home in Corsier-sur-Vevey on Christmas Day 1977 at the age of eighty-eight. A simple funeral was held four days later at the Anglican church in Vevey and the body was buried in the local cemetery.
Two months later the grave was found empty and the coffin missing. The media variously claimed that fans had made off with his remains, that local anti-semites objected to a Jew’s presence in a Christian burial ground or that neo-Nazis had taken revenge for The Great Dictator. The truth was that thieves had taken the coffin and were demanding 600,000 Swiss francs for its return. Oona Chaplin refused to deal with them, saying, ‘My husband is in heaven and in my heart’.
After eleven weeks the intact coffin was found buried in a cornfield. The police duly caught the thieves, both motor mechanics, one an unemployed Pole, the other a Bulgarian.

Grave Robbers Once Stole Charlie Chaplin’s Body for Ransom in 1978
On Christmas Day, 1977, the 88 year old Charlie Chaplin skidded around his last corner. W.C. Fields had also died on Christmas. Sometimes it is Krampus and not Santa who visits us on that day.
The manner of Chaplin’s death was a stroke; he’d suffered several previous ones, and had been confined to a wheelchair for a few years by that point. Charlie thought wheelchairs were hilarious and had frequently used them for comic effect in movies like His New Profession (1914) and The Cure (1917). I know it’s immature of me but I find it ironically sad that he was too frail to make one last comedy from that wheelchair. It would have been a much more fitting send-off than his ignominious swan song A Countess from Hong Kong, released a decade earlier.
Still, that last decade had been eventful. Chaplin had returned to Hollywood in 1972 for the first time since his exile 20 years earlier; the occasion was his acceptance of an Honorary Oscar. 1977 was a year of iconic deaths. Groucho Marx and Elvis Presley had both died a few months previously, and the tabloids were full of celebrity death stuff. In March, 1978 a couple of lummoxes robbed his grave. They took the corpse and held it for ransom. But the Chaplin family were not only rich and influential but universally beloved. Police moved heaven and earth to recover the remains and nab the culprits. In May of that year, a couple of lowlifes were arrested for the crime and Chaplin was reinterred — this time inside several feet of concrete. He rests in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland.

Entertainer's family and officials discuss plans for new Chaplin museum
Memories of Charlie Chaplin's last quarter-century live on above the shores of Lake Geneva, where his Swiss mansion allowed for a normal family life and escape from global fame.
Now, after 14 years of planning, Chaplin's family and supporters are ready to convert the run-down mansion in Corsier-sur-Vevey into a museum to preserve those memories and introduce the early 20th century film icon to a new generation.
Three of his children - Michael, Eugene and Victoria - and business partners in the multi-million dollar project said on Wednesday they are on track for opening early in 2016.
Yves Durand, curator of the planned museum, said the house would be set up exactly as it was when Chaplin was living there, and that there would be a new Hollywood building where visitors will be able to see the sets of Chaplin films
Chaplin, who died in 1977, spent his last 25 years on the 14 hectares (35 acres) estate along the Swiss Riviera, where he could surround himself with family and take walks without drawing attention.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN - WikiVidi Documentary
Sir Charles Spencer Charlie Chaplin, was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the era of silent film. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona the Tramp and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death in 1977, and encompassed both adulation and controversy. Chaplin's childhood in London was one of poverty and hardship. As his father was absent and his mother struggled financially, he was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of nine. When he was 14, his mother was committed to a mental asylum. Chaplin began performing at an early age, touring music halls and later working as a stage actor and comedian. At 19, he was signed to the prestigious Fred Karno company, which took him to America. Chaplin was scouted for the film industry and began appearing in 1914 for Keystone Studios. He so...
