Chatam Sofer Memorial
The Chatam Sofer Memorial in Bratislava is a unique Jewish heritage site -- the sole remaining part of the centuries-old Jewish cemetery that was destroyed in 1943 when the nearby tunnel was constructed. Only the most important section, with 23 graves surrounding the Chatam Sofer's tomb, was preserved as an underground compound. In 2000-2002, the whole site was redeveloped and the gravestones were restored. The architect Martin Kvasnica designed a striking new complex that adheres to the strict requirements of the halakhah (Jewish law) as well as to the highest standards of contemporary architecture.

Mauzóleum jedného z najslávnejších rabínov 19. storočia. Chatam Sofer viedol bratislavskú ješivu, v čase jej rozkvetu mala 400 študentov.
BRATISLAVSKÝ RABÍN
V roku 1997 som na seminár televíznej tvorby počas štúdia novinárstva na Katedre žurnalistiky Filozofickej fakulty Univerzity Komenského v Bratislave nakrútil dokument BRATISLAVSKÝ RABÍN. I keď pôvodné zadanie znelo Dokument - osobnosť Univerzity Komenského, s našou pedagogičkou Stanislavou BENICKOU - som sa dohodol, že budem síce nakrúcať o osobnosti, ale nie z UK, ale o bratislavskom rabínovi Baruchovi MYERSovi. Cez jeho osobu predstavím židovskú Bratislavu (synagógu, židovské cintoríny, mikve, starú hrobku Chatama SÓFERA - keď ešte nad ňou jazdili električky, židovskú reštauráciu CHEZ DAVID), a aj niečo zo židovskej histórie a zvykov. Mnohé z miest, ktoré som do filmu vtedy nakrútil, už dnes neexistujú. O to vzácnejšie sú aj letecké zábery Bratislavy, ktoré som špeciálne pre tento film nasnímal. Niektorí ľudia, ktorých vidno v tomto dokumente, už, žiaľ, nežijú. A tí, čo žijú, teraz vyzerajú úplne inak, vrátane mňa.
Film som nakrúcal a strihal v Centre nezávislej žurnalistiky v systéme S-VHS(C). Strihal som lineárne - z videa do videa. Počítačom AMIGA som iba titulkoval, Efekty boli veľmi obmedzené a prelínačky úplne nemožné. Ale aj tak si i s odstupom času myslím, že som nakrútil a zostrihal film na hranici vtedajších mojich technologických možností. I keď niektoré strihy by som dnes urobil AKOŽE trošku menej divoké. ;-)
Moja vďaka patrí Slavovi UHRÍNOVI, ktorý mal na starosti videoštúdio a nebál sa ma nechať samého dva týždne strihať v štúdiu a aj narábať s veľkou a ťažkou kamerou, hoci - podľa predpisov - kameramanskú a strihačskú prácu mal robiť on sám.
Napokon - táto moja samostatná práca zostaka u vedenia Centra v živej pamäti a keď Slavo o tri roky neskôr zo Štúdia odchádzal, ponúkli jeho prácu mne. A tak som potom správcu videoštúdia, kameramana, strihača a lektora v Centre nezávislej žurnalistiky robil až do jeho zániku.
Tak vznikol môj prvý autorský dokumentárny film, v ktorom som si zastal funkciu scenáristu (celý scenár som napísal až po úplnom dokončení filmu, a to len preto, lebo to bolo povinné), kameramana, zvukára, strihača, hudobného dramaturga i režiséra. S niektorými zábermi mi pomohol Slavo, môj otec IVAN a brat PETER. Za pomoc im aj takto ďakujem, rovnako aj Baruchovi MYERSovi, jeho rodine a personálu už neexistujúcej židovskej reštaurácie CHEZ DAVID.
Tak teda - zapozerajte sa do židovskej Bratislavy a ľudí spred 20 rokov :-) .

We couldn't leave Bratislava before seeing the Bratislava Orthodox Synagogue. It was lucky we did go to see it, as it is such a well preserved building and only goes to show that the Jewish community was substantial.
According to the Jewish Museum in Bratislava, there at one time 80,000 Jewish people living in Bratislava alone. Due to WW2 and other situations, there are only 1,000 Jewish people now living in Bratislava, which is sad. We were told that many families go to Vienna and Budapest, where the communities are bigger.
Unfortunately, the Synagogue was closed, but this gives you an idea of the community that is still there.
The only remaining synagogue in Bratislava is located on Heydukova Street, not far from the historic city center.
It was constructed in 1923-1926, decades after restrictions on Jewish residence were lifted, enabling them to move out of the Judengasse district and settle throughout the city.
The synagogue exterior has a towerless, seven-pillared colonnade facing the street. The interior includes a large sanctuary in which modern steel-and-concrete construction and contemporary Cubist details are combined with historicist elements, such as the arcade of the women's gallery, a metallic bimah, and the ark.
The architecture fulfils traditional religious requirements, such as separation of men and women and placement of the bimah in the center, but it also features modern facilities: Cloak-rooms, toilets, and an array of additional rooms for study and social gatherings cluster along the western façade of the building.
The synagogue still serves as an active Jewish house of worship.
There are several Holocaust memorial plaques here, and a community memorial exhibition is being prepared for installation in the women's gallery.

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia and the country's largest city. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Known as Pressburg to German-speakers or Pozsony to Hungarian-speakers, Bratislava got its present name only 90 years ago. But the city has a long and proud history that dates back to pre-Roman times. The hillsides on the edge of the city have been home to vineyards for centuries, and close to Bratislava are wine towns where you can taste the best - and it is startlingly good - that Slovakia has to offer. In the city itself there is plenty to see and do. Bratislava's long history - as home to Celts, Romans, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, and of course Slovaks means there is an impressive range of architecture, languages and cuisine. Impressive homes of the Austro-Hungarian noble families who built palaces here dot the city, and many of them are now open to the public as museums and galleries. The castle, with its long and chequered history (it has been destroyed more than once), is now undergoing a major restoration. There are great views over the medieval old town and the Danube valley from its fortifications. Bratislava was once one of the most important centres of Jewish learning in Europe. A unique memorial to its most renowned rabbi, the Chatam Sofer, and the city's Museum of Jewish Culture celebrate this heritage. Communism too left its mark: across the river, the unmistakable ranks of concrete housing blocks paneláky in Slovak line the horizon, with the unique UFO-style New Bridge in the foreground.
The Danube River itself is, of course, one of the city's main assets. There are several cafes along its banks, within walking distance of the centre. The 'UFO' itself contains an eponymous bar high above the river. The pedestrian decks of the New and Old Bridges are good places to watch the river traffic, including huge Danube barges, glide past. Alternatively, you can take to the water yourself: daily hydrofoil services link the city with nearby Vienna.
A succession of four and five-star hotels have opened in the city over the past few years and quality accommodation is now readily available. There are also more cheap options than ever before, with several backpacker hostels in the centre of town. Major music acts often play concerts in Bratislava, while the Slovak Philharmonic and the opera and ballet of the Slovak National Theatre regularly put on world-class performances. Numerous restaurants offering international cuisine from Slovak to French to Argentinian to Japanese and excellent local beer and wine fill the city centre, alongside lively bars, lounges and clubs. If, having enjoying the food and drink, you feel like walking or biking there are almost unlimited opportunities in the forested hills to the north of the city, or along the Danube to the south, where inline skating is also very popular on the scores of kilometres of traffic-free paths.
