The castle opens for the February holidays from Saturday, February 10 to Sunday, March 11! Every day from 14h to 18h. We will be there to welcome you with a heated castle (not 20 ° but still nice), our open shop (where you can even drink hot chocolate or coffee) and our entertainment: falconry workshops Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:30 pm and 4 pm; a Musketeer workshop, on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:30 pm and 4 pm; for more information see the website: milandes.com; happy Holidays to all!

Château des Milandes (Joséphine Baker) et spectacle de rapaces HD
Le magnifique Château des Milandes, près de Castelnaud la Chapelle (Dordogne). Essentiellement célèbre pour avoir eu pour propriétaire la grande chanteuse franco-américaine Joséphine Baker. C'est dans cette demeure qu'elle fonda une association pour accueillir des orphelins du monde entier. Hélas, sa trop grande générosité lui fit accumuler les dettes et elle dut abandonner le château quelques années avant sa mort. L'intérieur du château est un musée racontant sa vie depuis son arrivée en France au début des années 20, montre quelques pièces uniques (sa célèbre ceinture de bananes), et dévoile des pans de son histoire peu connue (elle fut une grande résistante). A l'extérieur du château, on peut admirer de très beaux jardins, ainsi qu'une jolie exhibition de vols de rapaces (fauconnerie). De quoi passer une agréable après-midi en famille.

Choć wioska mieści się z departamencie Dordogne, pod departamencie Perigord Noir, niedaleko Sarlat – jeden z najbardziej i najczęściej odwiedzanych miast w Dordognie. Au départ la chapelle du château des Milandes ne payait pas de mine, mais plus les travaux avancent plus on y découvre de grands trésors. Il y a quelques jours de grandes peintures murales du 16e siècle ont été mises au jour.

Château de Castelnaud la chapelle et son musée de la guerre au Moyen-Age
Au cœur du Périgord Noir, le château de Castelnaud, bâti sur un éperon rocheux, offre un magnifique panorama sur la vallée de la Dordogne. Fondé au XIIe siècle, c’est un parfait exemple de fortification médiévale. Il abrite aujourd’hui une importante collection d’armes et d’armures. Sur le bastion, les plus puissantes machines de siège du Moyen Âge sont reconstituées en position d’attaque.
Castelnaud, ou plutôt Castelnau, le château neuf, est fondé au XIIe siècle. Possession du seigneur cathare Bernard de Casnac au début du XIIIe siècle, il est pris par Simon de Montfort en 1214, lors de la croisade contre les Albigeois. Un nouveau château est alors reconstruit. Le donjon et la courtine datent de cette époque.
Pendant la guerre de Cent Ans, le château est souvent dans le camp anglais. Après un siège ordonné par le roi Charles VII en 1442, les Français l’emportent définitivement. Le conflit terminé, le château est restitué aux Caumont, propriétaires depuis 1368. Ils renforcent le dispositif défensif : l’enceinte basse et la nouvelle barbacane sont équipées de canonnières puis la tour d’artillerie est édifiée.
Pendant les guerres de Religion, le château est confié au capitaine Geoffroy de Vivans, né à Castelnaud. Surnommé le batailleur, il est craint dans tout le Périgord. Une réputation qui éloignera les assaillants du château durant cette période.
Au XVe siècle, de nouveaux corps de logis sont aménagés pour améliorer le confort de la forteresse médiévale. Malgré tout, les Caumont quittent Castelnaud pour vivre dans leur nouveau château aux Milandes.
Au XVIIe siècle, le château est rarement occupé. Abandonné à la Révolution, il ne cesse alors de se dégrader et sert même de carrière de pierres au XIXe siècle.
Classé Monument Historique en 1966, il a depuis fait l’objet de campagnes de restaurations spectaculaires, et accueille depuis 1985 « le Musée de la guerre au Moyen Âge ».

Josephine Baker:
Josephine Baker (born Freda Josephine McDonald, naturalised French Joséphine Baker; 3 June 1906 – 12 April 1975) was an American-born French entertainer, activist and French Resistance agent. Her career was centered primarily in Europe, mostly in her adopted France. During her early career she was renowned as a dancer, and was among the most celebrated performers to headline the revues of the Folies Bergère in Paris. Her performance in the revue Un vent de folie in 1927 caused a sensation in Paris. Her costume, consisting of only a girdle of artificial bananas, became her most iconic image and a symbol of the Jazz Age and the 1920s.[citation needed]
Baker was celebrated by artists and intellectuals of the era, who variously dubbed her the “Black Venus”, the Black Pearl, the Bronze Venus, and the Creole Goddess. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she renounced her U.S. citizenship and became a French national after her marriage to French industrialist Jean Lion in 1937.[2] She raised her children in France. I have two loves, my country and Paris. the artist once said, and sang: «J'ai deux amours, mon pays et Paris».[3]
Baker was the first African-American to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film Siren of the Tropics, directed by Mario Nalpas and Henri Étiévant.[4]
Baker refused to perform for segregated audiences in the United States and is noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. In 1968 she was offered unofficial leadership in the movement in the United States by Coretta Scott King, following Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. After thinking it over, Baker declined the offer out of concern for the welfare of her children.[5][6]
She was also known for aiding the French Resistance during World War II.[7] After the war, she was awarded the Croix de guerre by the French military, and was named a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur by General Charles de Gaulle.[8]

Her story is now celebrated in the Chateau des Milandes, the beautiful 15th century castle she bought in 1947 after renting it for many years. She transformed it into a home for her 12 adopted children, as well as a successful avant-garde tourist attraction.
Josephine Baker was born in St Louis, Missouri and began her career in Vaudeville before moving to New York City during the Harlem Renaissance. She was an early civil rights activist and refused to perform in America to segregated audiences. She soon moved to Paris where she became the first world famous African-American entertainer. Her iconic banana skirt costume is on display at the castle along with other memorabilia. Josephine Baker was also active in the French Resistance during World War II and was made a Chevalier of the Legion D'honneur. Later, after a series of financial problems she went bankrupt and tragically lost her Chateau. She was rescued by Princess Grace and given a home in Monaco.
Today Chateau des Milandes can be seen in all its glory with its stone towers and turrets, sculptures, gargoyles and chimeras, stained glass windows, extensive gardens above the Dordogne River with a magnificent arboretum of trees. Chateau des Milandes is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Perigord Noir. Lovingly curated by the de LaBarre family, it is an impressive tribute to the life and work of Josephine Baker. It also has one of the best falconry shows in the Med.
