Hale Ridge Road is the main route through the Warwoman Wildlife Management Area of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the only road that goes completely through to North Carolina. Just outside Clayton, Georgia, Hale Ridge Road offers access to numerous hiking trails including the Bartram Trail, Three-Forks Trail, Holcomb Trail and the Rabun Bald Trail. With access to so many hiking trails and other Forest Service roads, Hale Ridge Road is a fun place to explore while out in the mountains.

Free Dispersed Camping - Chattahoochie National Forest, Georgia - Hightower Campsite. It was a bit hot in late August, but absolutely beautiful. Amazing views. The drive in was a little rough. No problem with internet, but it could get noisy at times. Also no toilets or water. Bring everything you need in with you.

Old Homestead Site in Chattahoochee National Forest
While exploring on the Aska Trail System in Northern Georgia I found what looks to be remains of an old homestead site. The chimney was in a clearing in the woods as I ventured off the trail some. I am not sure of the history here yet but I really enjoyed experiencing the wilderness here!

I found this cemetery while exploring along Lake Blue Ridge in Chattahoochee National Forest. This cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Fannin County Georgia.

Hemlock Falls in Clayton Georgia
We hiked Hemlock Falls in Clayton Georgia this weekend. I LOVED this trail!! It is a 2 mile hike to the top where you will see a low waterfall but it has lots of water and a beautiful pool beneath it. It looks like a perfect swimming spot in the summer. The hike is fairly easy as there is not a steep uphill grade. Although there are parts of the trail which are quite wet and as you get about half way up the trail turns much narrower and more rocky and there are more roots to trip over if you are not careful. The entire trail is close to the river and the sounds of the water were just beautiful on our fall hike. We had a wonderful time on this trail and will definately be doing it again!!
Chattahoochee National Forest - Dukes Creek Falls
I went on a day hike in the Chattahoochee National Forest to see Dukes Creek Falls. It is located near the town of Cleveland, Georgia along the Richard B. Russel Scenic Highway. The waterfall is a popular destination as it is only a two or three mile round trip hike. On this day the crowds were sparse and I was able to enjoy most of the trail solo.
The falls are definitely worth adding to your list of waterfalls to check out. Davis Creek forms the upper elevation waterfall and at the confluence with Dukes Creek there is a series of waterfalls along its course. The trail is a well worn path following Dukes Creek with several cascades along the way to enjoy.
This is the location of the north Georgia gold rush of 1828. A U.S. Mint was established in neighboring Lumpkin County in Dahlonega, GA where they minted gold coins. The dome of the state capitol building of Georgia is covered in gold from this area.

Hiking Three Forks Trail - Clayton Georgia
A quick getaway to the mountains of North Georgia.
Right in the corner where North, Carolina, South Carolina, & Georgia all meet. A pretty mellow 2.5 mile trail leading to a very pretty cascading waterfall at the end. I cant wait till spring to check this trail out again.

Rabun Bald via Wilson Gap - Chattahoochee National Forest, GA
A hike on November 18, 2018 in Chattahoochee National Forest to Rabun Bald, the 2nd highest peak in Georgia. I took the long and lonely Walnut Fork Rd from Sarahs Creek to lofty Wilson Gap in the middle of nowhere. From Wilson Gap I followed the Bartram Trail north, first bushwhacking to the eastern cliffs of Double Knob. These cliffs provide a good view of the Sarahs Creek watershed but probably weren't worth the bushwhack. The next views were from a nice outcrop below the trail above Wilson Knob, looking southwest towards Oakey Mountain and Clayton.
The Bartram Trail tops 4,000 feet beside Flat Top and drops into Saltrock Gap with good campsites and a water source. After briefly climbing out of Saltrock Gap the trail flattens out towards Flint Gap. The trail out of the gap is well graded for the final approach with numerous switchbacks through a dense canopy of rhododendrons. A quaint lookout tower remains on the summit of Rabun Bald, sort of a cross between Yellow Mountain and Moores Knob. Rabun Bald is the 2nd highest peak in GA at 4,696 feet and has outstanding 360-degree views from the open tower deck. You can see the numerous cliff walls of the Blue Wall along the SC border towards the east, and the various prominent peaks between Highlands and Brevard towards the ENE. Due north are the Nantahala and Cowee Mountain ranges around Highlands and Franklin. And the Standing Indian basin is the dominant row of peaks WNW. Further north you can spot the Great Smoky, Plott Balsam, and Great Balsam Mountain ranges sticking above the Nantahalas and Cowees. Black Rock Mountain is immediately southwest, and Brasstown Bald and many other famous GA peaks are much further WSW.
On the way back I bushwhacked to the summit of Flat Top, a ranked GA 4K peak (4,114 feet) before finishing at Wilson Gap. Rabun Bald is a great peak, and since it has other approach trails it is worthy of a return trip.
Hike was 9.6 miles with 2,540 feet elevation gain in 5 hours and 45 minutes.
