Jiu Zhai Gou China National Park Fairy Lake Part 3
Jiu Zhai Gou China National Park Part 3
We take a bus to another part of the park. This time, due to the many steps to climb, we hire a sedan chair to bring us up! Otherwise, it would be too tiring.
It is said that if there should be wonderlands on the earth, Jiuzhai Valley must be one of them. There is no equal elsewhere that has sceneries and fables of dreamlike eloquence, or natural purities like a fairyland as it.
Jiuzhai Valley National Park is located in Nanping County, 450 kilometers (about 280 miles) to the north of Chengdu City. Its name is due to the existence of nine stockaded villages of Tibetan origin, and it is always regarded as a holy mountain and watercourse by the Tibetan people.
It is a great masterpiece of nature having dreamlike scenery, which combines blue lakes, waterfalls, verdant forests, snow-covered mountains, and the folk customs of the Tibetan and Qiang peoples. Legend has it that long long ago the deity of mountain named Dago had a crush on the goddess Semo, and he gave a mirror that was made from wind and cloud to the goddess. However, the devil appeared and made trouble to Semo. Inadvertently, Semo broke the mirror into 108 pieces, which fell down to the earth and then turned to 108 colorful lakes. The lake is also called Haizi by local people.
In addition to the dreamlike sceneries, there are numerous flora and fauna in the scenic area. The natural forest covers an area of nearly 30,000 hectares (about 74,132 acres), including 2,576 higher plant species (24 species of national protected plants) and over 400 lower plant species (212 species of algae). The diversity of flora has provided a good environment for wild animals. There are 170 species of vertebrates, 141 species of birds and 17 species of rare animals. Among them the first rank has giant pandas, takins and golden monkeys and the second rank has lesser pandas, marmots, and blue sheep.
Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area covers more than 600 square kilometers (about 230 square miles). Shuzheng Valley, Rize Valley and Zechawa Valley are the three main valleys, but the sceneries are far more than you expect. There are Panda Lake Waterfall which has the longest drop in Jiuzhai Valley and freezes to a crystal world in winter, the giant calc-sinter beach Pearl Beach, the Arrow Bamboo Lake that has a large area of bamboo, the favorite food of pandas, and Swan Lake where swans inhabit ...

Zhangye, Gansu: Horse's Hoof Temple: Matisi
I was really lucky to be able to recover this footage - this is a place that foreigners rarely visit, so I REALLY wanted to show you!
The Mati Temple Scenic Area, also named Horse's Hoof Temple, is a distinguished scenic spot integrating grottoes, the scenery of the Qilian Mountain, and Yugur local customs, lying in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in Zhangye City.
Legend about the Horse's Hoof Temple goes that a Chinese Pegasus landed here, leaving a huge horseshoe imprint that can still be seen within the Mati Hall in the temple. Thus the temple got the name “Horse's Hoof Temple”.
Mati Temple boasts more than 70 caves and shrines. These grottoes are arranged in the form of a pagoda, with Buddhist halls inside and corridors outside. The total number of caves and shrines both inside and outside is up to 49, all of which are of unique designs. The surroundings of Mati Temple are very beautiful, and the verdant hills, green waters, unusual peaks and peculiar caves are the most famous things of Mati Temple.
The Mati Temple Scenic Area consists of mountains, grasslands, pine forests, and a range of temples. Around the main temple there are winding passageways, caves, and well-organized stairwells.
Besides, the Mati Temple Scenic Area is distinguished for the Yugur People, which is a unique minority group in Gansu Province, living at the foot of the snow-covered Qilian Mountain in the southern part of Zhangye for several generations. The Yugur people are fa¬mous for their folk songs, dances, tents, costumes, food and culture. Studies show that the Yugur people may be descendants of the Xiongnu people, an ancient nomadic people in China who roved about on the highland meadow at the foot of Qilian Mountain for good water resources and lush grassland.
In the Mati Temple Scenic Area, tourists can enjoy the scenery of Qilian Mountain and the vast grassland. It is also possible to stay in a Yugu minority tent, where you can drink chang (Tibetan wine, made of barley) presented by Yugur girls, sample the traditional hand eaten lamb, accept hada (a silk scarf used as a greeting gift), and appreciate folk songs to know more about nomads lifestyle. Horseriding can be tried, which makes you experience unique customs of the Yugur in Zhangye.

Beyond the Smog: Exploration for Conservation in China's Hengduan Mountains
North Yunnan, west Sichuan, and east Qinghai. They form a geographic belt known as the Hengduan mountains. This is one of the world's most ecologically interesting and unexplored regions. Unknown to the West, this is also where China's next grassroots environmental movement is being born. For the first time this century, locals are taking advantage of social capital and a supportive government attitude to collectively organize and protect the wild. I will follow this line up the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau, being the first environmental photographer and writer to comprehensively document these local environment groups' stories, their daily conservation work, and backcountry landscapes. When the world sees not just the value of China's backcountry, but the fact that the Chinese can protect it themselves, funding for these remote environmental organizations will grow, their presence and ability to attract volunteers will strengthen, and China's wild will be seen not as a lost cause but a resource worth protecting. This is part of a WildChina Explorer Grant application. Please vote for me here to bring this project to life:
