River Snails (& the Chengdu TV Tower) // Chengdu: City of Gastronomy 43
This video is all about Chengdu, the city… yes, of gastronomy, but also the city that’s a great place to live. It has a long history, the geography is interesting, the population is booming, and the restaurant scene is of course fantastic. All that is on display as we visit the West Pearl Tower - Chengdu’s TV Tower and the best place to go for a 360 view of Chengdu. On a beautiful day like the one we picked you can see mountains in the distance. The Jin Jiang or Brocade River snakes its way between buildings of all sizes. The Sichuan TV Tower is one of the best tourist attractions in Chengdu.
After spending a couple hours at the tower, we headed back to ground level and made our way over to 3rd Brother River Snails. This highly regarded fly restaurant is about as exciting as dining gets. If you like frantic atmospheres, and you have an open mind when it comes to the food (which Sara describes as 'river bugs'), you’ll love this place. Of course, their specialty is river snails, which I happily scarfed down. We also got a big bowl of crayfish and a really tasty pot of braised noodle soup in a tomato infused broth.
Not all of us were fans of the food, but I don’t even think the squeamish can deny the flavors were incredible. Despite being a Chengdu fly restaurant - which basically means it’s a no-nonsense, poorly decorated, old school Chengdu food joint - this restaurant is all about enjoying the rènào (literally hot and noisy, but really just means lively) atmosphere. The food takes a lot of time to eat. The beer come quick and goes down fast. It feels like you’re apart of a party.

In this series, I am eating my way through a deck of cards. I bought a deck of food themed playing cards that feature a different Sichuan dish on every card. Every week I'll shuffle the deck and pick one random card to hunt down and sample. Chengdu was the first Asian city to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. It's full of incredible food - a lot of which you probably don't know about.

West Pearl Tower is a 339 tall tower located a short distance from downtown Chengdu. It was originally built as a tv and radio tower for Chengdu and Sichuan Province but has become a popular tourist attraction as it has an indoor and outdoor observatory and a revolving restaurant at the top. There are a lot of attractions in Chengdu but the West Pearl Tower is unique in that you're able to get some amazing views of the city (Weather Permitting).

Chengdu (成都) - People's Park and Tianfu Square
The capital of southwest China's Sichuan province, Chengdu is a modern city with plenty of history and culture to back it up. A morning here is well-spent wandering the massive People's Park, where locals gather to sip tea, take a boat ride, or get in the groove with live music and plenty of group dancing. From there, a stroll through downtown's Tianfu Square gives you a glimpse into both Chengdu's past and future.

Park Built OVERNIGHT in Chengdu | Rapid Construction & Development in China | China's Never Finished
My Patreon:
I'm showing you all a perfect example of just how rapidly China is changing. It's mind boggling the speed at which China is racing into the next thing. In my little area of Chengdu called Niuwangmiao, there used to be an apartment building, and one day, I came by, and it was boarded up. The next day, the building and rubble was gone. The next day, an entire park was there! I couldn't and still can't get over how fast that park sprang up. The Chengdu metro is another great example. China is never finished!! Things are never done here

Notre Dame in China: Chengdu
Pig Intestine Alley // Chengdu: City of Gastronomy 24
I can't say I was excited when I flipped over a card with a photo of pig intestines on it. Little did I know, I was about to have one of the best meals I've eaten in Chengdu. Pig Intestine Alley is the name of the restaurant, but of course their specialty is pig intestine. That being said, I couldn't resist ordering the first item on their menu, which translates to something like mixed braised meat. It's tender pork leg meat stewed for hours and then covered in a combination of chili oil, vinegar, and sugar. The spicy, sweet, salty combination is one that I've always loved - combined with moist hunks of pork - it was incredibly delicious.
Woah, hold on! Don't get your panties in a bundle! Of course I tried pig intestine at Pig Intestine Alley. I was very happy with the flavorful pieces of large intestine. The texture is the challenge here - only because it's one that you're probably not used to. If you can get past that (and I guess the fact that pig poo once roamed them hallways) you'll be pretty satisfied with this dish. It came with perfectly cooked potatoes.
I really did love this restaurant. The atmosphere was great and the food was even better. The couple that run the place were happy to serve me (and to put up with my lack of Chinese and all my camera crap). Their son, who also works there, spoke English and was happy to chat. He told me that the restaurant has been there, doing well, for the past 15 years.
HOW TO VISIT PIG INTESTINE ALLEY
The restaurant's name in Chinese is 巷子肥肠 (Xiàngzi féicháng).
Its address: 成都市武侯区科华巷2号附4号-6号
That's on Ke Hua Lane, a relatively short walk from Line 1 and Line 3 station Sichuan Gymnasium.
It's location on a map:
If you want to try the Stewed Mixed Meat dish that I had, you can order 拌拐肉 (Bàn guǎi ròu). If you want to try intestines, there are a couple options: Mixed Intestines 拌肥肠 (Bàn féicháng), stewed intestines 卤肥肠 (Lǔ féicháng), and 烧肥肠 (Shāo féicháng) which could mean baked or barbecued or even roasted.
