Famous Dong Wind and Rain Bridge, China
The famous Wind and Rain Bridge in Chengyang is considered to be the most beautiful and best preserved bridge and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are 108 such structures in Sanjiang County but this one is the ultimate symbol of the Dong minority people.

Мост Дождя и Ветра Ченьян – один из самых красивейших и уникальных мостов мира. Он также является одной из наиболее интересных достопримечательностей Китая. Мост включает в себя 5 павильонов, 19 веранд, расположенных на трехэтажной конструкции общей длиной в 64,4 метра. По обоим концам мост соединяется с берегом специальными деревянными платформами с лестничным спуском на возвышении из дикого камня.
Мост Ченьян был открыт в 1916 году над рекой Санцзян на высоте 10,6 метра. Держится сооружение на трех каменных опорах с рассекающими воду зауженными гранями. И вся эта сложная архитектурная композиция в чисто китайском стиле была сделана этническим населением – дунами — без использования гвоздей, представляя собой исключительно сборную конструкцию. По обеим сторонам мост огорожен перилами, а крыши его башенок покрыты серой черепицей и надежно укрывают людей от дождя.
The bridge is a few decades old. Its structure is unusual and rather beautiful. It has five solid stone pillars, each with a wooden pavilion on top. The bridge is about 64 meters (210 feet) long, 3.4 meters (11 feet) wide and 10 meters (33 feet) high. Wooden pillars run the course of the bridge and support the roof. It is said that the whole structure is built without a single nail or metal support; the planks and beams are held together using joints. In Mandarin, the bridge is called a Fengyu Qiao or Wind and Rain Bridge. It is one of about 100 such bridges in the area, and is said to be the biggest. It is interesting architecturally.
Such bridges are meant to shelter the villagers in bad weather and otherwise are places to sit together and enjoy the scenery. There is a fee of about 30 RMB for seeing the Chengyang Bridge, and women on the bridge sell embroidery and cotton blankets boldly patterned in black and white. One may also be able to buy shiny blue-black Dong jackets, dyed with indigo and varnished in egg white as protection against mosquitoes. Dance shows may be performed for an extra fee.
From the bridge, you can watch the river and the people going about their activities. You can see a tight group of two or three story houses. The houses are overlooked by a square drum tower. For an excursion while visiting the bridge, there's a trail from the main road up to two pavilions overlooking Chengyang. Chengyang Bridge or Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge is a bridge in Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, of Guangxi, China. Chengyang Bridge is a special covered bridge or lángqiáo, and one of several Fengyu Bridges in the local Dong Minority Region. It was completed in 1912. It has many other names including Yongji Bridge and Panlong Bridge. The bridge is a combination of bridge, corridor, veranda and Chinese pavilion. It has two platforms (one at each end of the bridge), 3 piers, 3 spans, 5 pavilions, 19 verandas, and three floors. The piers are made of stone, the upper structures are mainly wooden, and the roof is covered with tiles. The bridge has wooden handrails on both sides. The bridge has a total length of 64.4 metres , and its corridor has a width of 3.4 metres. The net height above the river is about 10 metres. The bridge is located in Chengyang, and serves as the link between two populous villages. As a result, there is substantial daily traffic on the bridge. Guo Moruo, a famous Chinese author, loved the bridge at first sight and wrote a poem for it.

Overland Southwest China 3 Sanjiang Dong Minority Region
We stopped in Sanjiang and found a bus towards Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge, one of the largest, most beautiful and best preserved bridges of it's kind in the region. The bridge and buildings here are reputedly built with NO NAILS. There are plenty of hiking options to small nearby villages and we found a market happening a few hour walk away in a town called Lin Xi.

Second day in Sanjiang, Guangxi, China --- Chengyang Dong village. More drum towers and wind and rain bridges. Got to see basically the entire process to produce rice. Also saw a Dong performance.

Chinese province of Guangxi — The only place in China where you can admire the unique bridges Wind and Rain. Covered bridges made of wood and stone, across-ed the river Sanjiang, located in Sangiang County, the Gaungixi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. The crystal of dong people's wisdom and the largest Wing and Rain Bridge in China. It was built in 1916 and its length is 64.4 meters, a width of 3.4 meters and a height of 10.6 meters. Construction of the bridge is made of wood and stone, the surface is lined with wooden planks, and on both sides of the rails are inserted. The bridge includes 5 pavilions, 19 verandas, three-story structure located on a total length of 64.4 meters. At both ends of the bridge connects to the shore platforms with special wooden stairs. The bridge is established on three stone pillars with dissecting water narrowed faces. All this complex architectural composition in pure Chinese style was made by ethnic population — Dong — without the use of nails, representing only dream design. On both sides of the bridge railing fenced and covered the roof of it gray-tiled turrets and for people sheltering from the rains.
Out on the bridges, people can relax while sitting on a bench and enjoy the picturesque scenery. Peering into the distance, and feel intoxicated by the beauty. Linsey river, winding from the horizon; tea tree growing on the hills, local farmers working hard in the fields, and water spinning mill, pouring water falling cascade downstream.
Many visitors like to spend time here enjoying the beautiful pastoral live and watch the people of Dun. Here you can find the eight know villages with palisades, where we can learn the culture and costumes of ethnic Dong, easy accommodation is also available near the bridge.

Sanjiang Day One
Chengyang is a Dong village near Sanjiang in Guangxi, China. After talking to the proprietor of our hotel, I learned it was especially popular with French tourists ever since some sort of musical exchange between the French and the Dong in 1983. Drum towers and Wind and Rain Bridges abound.

Crossing World's Longest Covered Bridge, Hartland Bridge NB
The Hartland Bridge, built in 1901, spans the Saint John River in New Brunswick, Canada. At 1,282 feet long, it is the world's longest covered bridge. On one side of the river is the hamlet of Somerville, the other side is the town of Hartland, New Brunswick.

Guangxi travel 2009-2 (Dong villages in Chengyang)
Chengyang (程阳) is a district consisting of eight villages, located 4--5 hours from Guilin, in the Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County of Guangxi province of China.
This slideshow is all my original pictures taken when I traveled to Guangxi in autumn 2009.
