Local Reaction to Veteran Deaths in Phoenix
Allegations that 40 Vets died in Phoenix because of a lack of treatment by a Phoenix V.A. hospital, come as a shock to mountain Veterans.
Veterans who are patients at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville say they've never heard of a death here because of delays in treatment. Some say they have no problems with appointments.
Others say they have waited hours to see a doctor. They hope investigation into the deaths in Phoenix, will result in better treatment of veterans in V.A. facilities. Army Veteran Alvin Felton says it's not right for 40 Veterans who served their country to suffer and pay the ultimate price for their lives, because the V.A. system couldn't treat them on time.
V.A. Health Administration Services Chief, Bob Downs, says there have been improvements in scheduling for appointments. He says if there's a work load the V.A. can't do in house, they make every attempt to reach out to the private sector to refer that care in Asheville. Downs says there are no extended wait areas in any clinic at the center.
The American Legion has called for Secretary Shinseki's resignation. He is expected to testify next Thursday before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.

FORT CAROLINE
During the sixteenth century, France was determined to expand its empire. Spain, the world's leading power, already had a foothold in the Americas, and France wanted a share of the riches the Spanish were gaining through trade and plunder. France's first attempt to stake a permanent claim in North America was at La Caroline, a settlement near the mouth of the St. Johns River in Florida.
At first, the settlement was to be a commercial venture, but religious conflict in France broadened the goals. The growing persecution of French Protestants (Huguenots) led their most powerful member, Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, to make a proposal to the crown: the colony could also be a refuge for Huguenots. An exploratory expedition, commanded by Jean Ribault, left France in February 1562. On this voyage, he erected a monument at the River of May (now known as the St. Johns River).
Permanent settlement of 200 soldiers and artisans began in 1564, led by Rene de Goulaine de Laudonniere, who had accompanied Ribault on the previous expedition. With help from the Timucua Indians, the colonists began building a village and fort on the river's south bank, naming the area La Caroline after their king, Charles IX.
Three hundred colonists left France to establish a permanent settlement in North America. Included were some of the leading families of France, wearing gilded armor and brightly colored clothes. Other representatives of French society included artisans to provide entertainment and produce drawings, and laborers to build the fort. The desire for permanency was illustrated by the inclusion of women, of whom at least four had husbands. Most were Huguenots, but there were also Catholics and agnostics. The colonists were seeking opportunity and freedom in a distant land.
French artist Jacques le Moyne de Morgues came with Laudonniere to Florida in 1564. His job was to paint images of the people, flora and fauna, and geography of this part of the New World. Le Moyne was one of the few who escaped from Fort de la Caroline when the Spanish attacked in 1565. He found refuge on a French boat, along with Laudonniere and several others, and returned to Europe, where he recreated from memory scenes of the New World.
In Florida, both Spain and France hoped to claim their piece of the new world. By the time the French planted their settlement at La Caroline, Spain was entrenched in South and Central America and its sea routes through the Caribbean were well established. Spanish ships bearing gold and silver from the mines of Mexico and Peru stopped at Havana before sailing for Spain. They rode the Gulf Stream through what is now the Straits of Florida and up the southeastern coast of North America. The Spanish were uneasy about a French settlement because their treasure ships, while they followed the Florida coast, could be easy prey for suspected French raiders in their nearby haven at La Caroline.
They be all naked and of goodly stature, mighty, faire and as well shapen...as any people in all the worlde, very gentill, curtious and of good nature... the men be of tawny color, hawke nosed and of a pleasant countenance...the women be well favored and modest...
French explorer Jean Ribault was impressed by the first native peoples he encountered in Florida. The Timucuans under Chief Saturiwa, who met the French at the mouth of the River of May in 1562, were one of a number of Timucua-speaking tribes who inhabited central and north Florida and southeastern Georgia. They were the final stage of a culture whose way of life had remained essentially unchanged for more than 1000 years.

BTW: My tripod is complete crap, its a 10 year old photography tripod not even designed for video. So sorry for the crappy pans etc.

Welcome to Lake Chatuge and the Mountains!
Lake Chatuge Real Estate - Hayesville Realty
Hello. My name is Ed Reams, and I'm the Owner/
Broker of Advantage Chatuge Realty here in
Hayesville, North Carolina. My staff and I would
like to welcome you to the beautiful mountain/
lakes region of western North Carolina and
northeast Georgia.
The crown jewel of our area is Lake Chatuge,
which you see behind me. It was named for an
century Cherokee village, which was once
18th
situated near this site. It's a very large lake, with
132 miles of shoreline -- and it covers more than
7,000 acres. Half the lake is located here in Clay
County, North Carolina, and the other half is
located just across the state line in Towns County,
Georgia.
Chatuge is a man-made lake, and was built in 1942
by the TVA... the Tennessee Valley Authority.
When the lake is at full pool during Spring and
Summer, its elevation is approximately 1,928 feet
above sea level.
As the off-season approaches, the TVA releases
a small amount of water and the lake level drops
a bit -- but is then brought back up to full pool the
following Spring.
There are several U.S. Wildlife Areas situated on
the lake, all of which are available for public use.
These Wildlife Areas have miles of hiking and
biking trails, boat launches, grills, picnic tables and
beaches.
Lake Chatuge is ideal for boating, swimming,
water skiing and fishing, and is conveniently
located within two hours' driving time of Atlanta,
Chattanooga and Asheville.
If you enjoy spending part of your outdoor time on
the links, you'll be pleased to learn that there are
three golf courses located within a 10 minute drive
of Lake Chatuge.
All of the courses are open to the public, and
they're all beautiful. Personally, I'm not much of
a golfer, but I have friends who are -- and many of
them insist that our local courses here are among
the most beautiful they've ever played.
Hayesville is the county seat of Clay County,
which was named for Henry Clay, the 18th
century Congressman, Senator and Secretary
of State under John Quincy Adams. Half the
county consists of pristine lands managed by the
U.S. Forest Service. These include a number of
National Wildlife Recreational Areas.
These are great spots to get together with family
and friends. There are hiking trails galore, picnic
tables and grills, and camping sites.
Some even offer miles of horseback riding trails...
creek-fed swimming holes, and large, natural
waterfalls.
If outdoor activities aren't your cup of tea, there
are plenty of indoor activities available to you.
For example, the John C. Campbell Folk School is
an internationally renowned institution where you
can take courses on everything from photography
to dancing to painting to blacksmithing.
Or, you can attend a presentation by one of our
local theater ensembles, dance troupes, or musical
groups.
Or, you can dine at one of our local restaurants
which -- personal opinion -- rival anything which
was available to us in metro Atlanta when we lived
there.
The quality of life here in the mountain/lakes
region is wonderful, and the lake is an ever-
changing palette of colors.
The daytime hours are filled with intense blues and
greens.
As we approach evening, the reds, oranges and
magenta's appear.
And sometimes in the early morning, the lake
sleeps beneath a layer of clouds.
Throw in a full moon for good measure, and
there's nothing quite like it.
I hope you've enjoyed this brief overview. If you
are considering purchasing property here, either
as a vacation home, a primary residence, or as an
investment, I hope you'll call me or one of our
agents; it would be our privilege to assist you in
your property search.
Thanks for joining us today.

Teaching Fellows
Tribal Chairman addresses Teaching Fellows
(May 2010) The Tribal Chairman of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina addressed the students within the Teaching Fellows Program at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Tuesday, May 18, 2010 in the Givens Performing Arts Center.
North Carolina again invests in our state by investing in you. Pursue your dreams. Use this as an opportunity to learn and grow all you can, stated Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett. This program will provide you the chance to come academically and culturally enriched.
According to the UNC-P Teaching Fellows Program, it was enacted by the General Assembly in 1986. The mission of the program was, and continues to be, to recruit talented high school graduates into the teaching profession and to help them develop leadership qualities such as visionary thinking and risk-taking; qualities that have not, in the past, been valued in teachers.
Let me reassure you by perspective that the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program is truly one great educational and teacher enhancement programs in the entire United States, commented UNC-P Chancellor Dr. Charles R. Jenkins. The Teaching Fellows Program was one of the components in a ten-point teacher recruitment proposal called Who Will Teach Our Children. The proposal was developed by the Public School Forum of North Carolina, a nonprofit partnership of business, educational and political leaders from throughout North Carolina, according to the program.
I have brought a few dancers, along with the drum group. It is my hope that you enjoy the cultural enrichment program we have for you tonight, continued Chairman Swett. Youth Services Coordinator John Oxendine then gave a cultural presentation describing each dancer's regalia and dance history, style, and origination. Afterwards each dancer would dance their individual dance style. In between each presentation the Lumbee Ambassadors would impart their own words of encouragement through their personal performances. For more information on the Teaching Fellows Program please contact the department at 910-521-6495 or by email at teaching.fellows@uncp.edu.
