Ep 9 - FRIDAYS IN THE GRAVEYARD - The Teackles - Princess Anne, MD
FRIDAYS IN THE GRAVEYARD
In this week's episode of Fridays in the Graveyard, Mindie Burgoyne talks about the grave of Littleton Dennis Teackle and his wife, Elizabeth Upshur Teackle. She is visiting St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Princess Anne, MD.
Littleton Dennis Teackle was a wealthy man who built a mansion and lived in Princess Anne, Maryland. The gravemarkers in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church graveyard are prominent, but the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Teackle aren't under the markers. The wealth had dried up by the time Mr. Teackle died in 1850 and it seems they were both buried in unmarked graves - - location unknown.
Most local historians believe that they were probably buried at St. Andrews as that was likely their worshipping community. Eventually, markers were placed in a prominent spot memorializing the Teackles and their contributions to Princess Anne.
But where the actual bodies are .... is a mystery.

HAUNTED MINUTES - The Pocomoke Forest
The most haunted forested area in all of Maryland, the Pocomoke Forest has a legacy of haunted stories and paranormal activity that dates back several hundred years. In this haunted minute, Mindie Burgoyne tells about the Forest and the legend of the Cellar House, an old home that sits on the banks of the Pocomoke River near the forest.
The Cellar House still stands and has been beautiful restored. It has a legend about a French sea captain /smuggler who used the house as storage for black-market goods. He killed his wife in the upstairs bedroom and allegedly had six fingers which some believe are stil pressing themselves onto car windows that park in the forest. More than one person has reported seeing a six-fingered handprint on the glass after returning to the car.
The Pocomoke walkway that weaves through the forest is closed at night, but it's a lovely walk during the day. If you want to experience the haunted forest at night join the Pocomoke Ghost Walk and get a guided tour with all the stories.

Ep 5 - FRIDAYS IN THE GRAVEYARD - Legh Masters - Westminster, Maryland
FRIDAYS IN THE GRAVEYARD - I love a graveyard, don’t you?
In this episode, Mindie Burgoyne talks about the grave of Legh Masters. We are at the Church of the Ascension Church in the heart of historic Westminster, Maryland.
Legh Masters was an English immigrant who built his fortune in England operating an iron business. He purchased 1000 acres in Westminster in 1770 and built another huge iron business and built a home near his iron furnace in an area known as Furnace Hills. He was a large slaveholder and allegedly murdered several of his slaves in a horribly violent manner.
He died in 1796 at the age of 79 and was buried on his property near his house in Furnace Hills. His bones kept rising up from the ground and surfacing. He was finally relocated to the grounds of Ascension Church in Westiminster and the grave was bricked over with a giant stone slab placed on top (to avoid any possibility of resurfacing bones). But the stone slab cracked - twice. So a new granite stone has now been added.
They say that the unrestful spirit of Legh Masters is seen near this church in downtown Westminster, riding on a charcoal gray horse that spews fire from its nostrils. The horse is led by an imp.

HAUNTED MINUTES – Rackliffe House
CORRECTION: Charles Rackliffe built the house but JOHN Rackliffe is the one who was murdered and whose wife was poisoned. So sorry for the mistake, but this was done on a whim and it was also FREEZING.
John Rackliffe was murdered by his slaves and is believed to haunt the property as well as his wife who also died an untimely death shortley after her husband. There was also an accidental death of a woman who fell down the steps, and the legend of a widow who lost her only son to the British army during the war of 1812. She hanged herself in the attic.
That means Rackliffe House is the site of a murder, a suicide and an accidental death .... the Haunted Trifecta!

Since its colonial founding in the 1760's Fell's Point as Baltimore's first deep water port has been home to a diverse population including both free and enslaved blacks who found employment in the thriving maritime industries that made the city an international shipping destination.

Wolfe St.
This lecture featured Ed Papenfuse, retired Maryland State Archivist and Commissioner of Land Patents, speaking on the history of the African-American Community in Fell's Point from the 18th Century to the Civil War. It was held May 11, 2017 at the Lucretia B. Fisher Visitor Center, 1724 Thames St., Baltimore, MD.
