Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station
With its two stations and five outbuildings, Chicamacomico (pronounced chik a ma COM i co) is the most complete site of remaining life-saving stations in North Carolina and one of the nations most complete sites. This site is located on Hatteras Island in the village of Rodanthe on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Our purpose is to restore, preserve, protect, educate and interpret the rich history of these valiant men and their dedication to the U.S. Life-Saving Service, as well as interpreting the history of the buildings and artifacts. We are open to the public from mid-April through November, and provide our visitors with tours, programs, reenactments and special events.
OBX Daydream | Chicamacomico Apparatus Drill
Predecessor to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station has a long-standing Beach Apparatus Drill program. The drill was performed originally by surfmen of the US Life Saving Service and continued after the merger that formed the USCG in 1915. The last actual rescue performed with the Beach Apparatus was in 1954. Old Harbor Life-Saving Drill
This is a video taken at the newly-restored Old Harbor Life-Saving Station at Cape Cod National Seashore in June 2010. In this video, National Park Service interpretive staff re-enact the rescue procedures used at life-saving stations along the coast to save shipwreck survivors stranded at sea in the late 1870s. The procedures re-enacted date back to the 1870s.
