2016 China Trip Day 11 in LongSheng Rice Terrace & Elephant Trunk HIll, Guilin, GuangXi, China
The Longsheng Rice Terraces, also called the Longji Rice Terraces, are located in Longsheng County, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Guilin, Guangxi, China. The terraced fields are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, between 600 m to 800 m above sea level. A coiling terrace line that starts from the mountain foot up to the mountain top divides the mountain into layers of water in spring, layers of green rice shoots in summer, layers of rice in fall, and layers of frost in winter. The terraced fields were mostly built about 650 years ago. Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Terraced Rice Fields received their name because the rice terraces resemble a dragon's scales, while the summit of the mountain range looks like the backbone of the dragon. In early June, water is pumped over the rice paddies and young plants are transferred to the main terraces.
The Elephant Trunk Hill (Chinese: 象鼻山; pinyin: Xiàngbí Shān) is a hill, landmark and tourist attraction in Guilin, Guangxi, China. It is the symbol of the city of Guilin. It got its name because it looks like an elephant drinking water. The round opening that would be under the elephant’s trunk is known as Water-Moon Cave because at night the reflection of the moon can be seen through the arch and it looks as if it is under the water and floating on the surface of the water at the same time. Elephant Trunk Hill and Water-Moon Cave are located at the confluence of the Taohua River and the Lijiang River

Guilin & Xing Ping China
Guilin is easily one of the most beautiful areas of China. The Li River that runs through the region is lined with stunning Karst Mountains as far as the eye can see. These mountains are what you will find on the Chinese 20rmb bank note.
During our Chinese Golden Week holiday we traveled down South to experience this magical land we had heard about and it did not disappoint. We took the typical touristy Li River cruise but got off half way down the river in the small town of Xing Ping. In addition to being located in the middle of some amazing hiking trails, the city is most known for their Cormorant Fishers. Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method in which fishermen use trained cormorant birds to fish in rivers. This method of fishing is a dying art and Xing Ping is still home to some of the few fishers that practice these methods.
We were lucky enough to hear of a secret hike from our hostel host. We had to take our scooter on a boat across the river and find our way to the starting point based on his directions and a few landmarks he had given us. Finally after an hour of searching we stumbled upon what we believed was the trail head at the back of a farmers field. This hike is one of our favourites we have ever done. It felt so private and removed from the hustle and bustle of China with views that we couldn't even imagine.
If you come to China, you need to visit Guilin!

The Elephant Trunk Hill is a landmark and tourist attraction in Guilin, Guangxi, China. Elephant Trunk Hill is the symbol of the city of Guilin. It got its name because it looks like an elephant drinking water.
About 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) from Elephant Trunk Hill and above the western bank of Li River Scenery , there towers Wave-Subduing Hill (Fubo Hill), another of Guilin's wonderfully scenic spots. It reaches the height of 213 meters (698.8 feet) and emerges 62 meters (203.4 feet) above the water.

Li Jiang, From Guilin to Yangshuo, Part 1 - China Travel Channel
The Li River (Li Jiang 漓江) has its source in the Cat Mountains - Mao'er Mountains - in the district of Xian (兴安 县 Xing'an Xiàn) north of Guilin in China. The river has a length of 302 miles. Its picturesque karst landscape near Guilin made the Li River a major tourist attraction in China.
The Li Jiang meandrous winds through Guilin, Yangshuo and Pingle. Our journey takes us from Guilin to Yangshuo in about 4 hours. This first part shows the river from Guilin to Langshi. During the trip, you can get little glimpses into the everyday life of the population. As all the boats take off almost simultaneously, the first ship convoy resembles a single file. In the course of the journey the ships spread on the river.
Before the departure, the cooks open the on-board kitchens to prepare the meals. The supply with fresh vegetables is carried out during the journey.
It is a wonderful, varied landscape with spectacular rock formations, interesting caves, springs and waterfalls. For the Chinese people the 52 miles between Guilin and Yangshuo resemble a jade ribbon wraping around thousands of hills. Every mountain is covered with a picture, like the Bat Hill (Bat Mountain) or the Wangfu rock that resembles a mother and child. We pass the Crown Cave (Cave of the crown) and immerse into the Langshi landscape.

Der 437 km lange Li-Fluss (漓江 Lí Jiāng) entspringt in den Katzenbergen -- Mao'er-Bergen - im Landkreis Xian (兴安县 Xīng'ān Xiàn) nördlich von Guilin in China. Seine malerische Karst-Landschaft bei Guilin machte ihn zu einer Touristenattraktion.
Mäanderförmig schlängelt er sich durch Guilin, Yangshuo und Pingle. Unsere Reise führt uns von Guilin in ca. 4 Stunden nach Yangshuo. Der 1. Teil zeigt den Fluss von Guilin bis Langshi. Während der Fahrt bekommt man auch kleine Einblicke in das Alltagsleben der Bevölkerung. Da alle Schiffe nahezu zeitgleich ablegen, ähnelt der Schiffskonvoi anfangs einem Gänsemarsch. Im Laufe der Fahrt verliert sich der größte Teil aber wieder.
Noch vor dem Ablegen beginnen die Köche in den offenen bordeigenen Küchen die Mahlzeiten zuzubereiten. Die Versorgung mit frischem Gemüse geschieht während der Fahrt.
Es ist eine wundervolle, abwechslungsreiche Landschaft mit spektakulären Felsformationen, interessanten Höhlen, Quellen und Wässerfällen. Für die Chinesen ähnelt er auf den 83 km zwischen Guilin und Yangshuo einem Jadeband, welches sich um Tausende von Hügeln legt. Jeder Berg wird mit einem Bildnis belegt, wie der Bat Hill (Fledermausberg) oder der Wangfu Rock, der einer Mutter mit Kind gleicht. Wir passieren die Crown Cave (Höhle der Krone) und tauchen ein in die Langshi Landschaft.
