Chinatown Singapore Info:
Chinatown (Chinese: 牛車水) is a subzone and ethnic enclave located within the Outram district in the Central Area of Singapore. Featuring distinctly Chinese cultural elements, Chinatown has had a historically concentrated ethnic Chinese population.
Chinatown is considerably less of an enclave than it once was. However, the precinct does retain significant historical and cultural significance. Large sections of it have been declared national heritage sites officially designated for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
Singapore's Chinatown is known as Niu che shui (Chinese: 牛車水; literally: 'ox car water') in Mandarin, Gu Chia Chwi in Hokkien and Ngau-che-shui in Cantonese - all of which mean bullock water-cart - and Kreta Ayer in Malay (Post-1972 spelling: kereta air), which means water cart. This is due to the fact that Chinatown's water supply was principally transported by animal-driven carts in the 19th century. Although these names are sometimes used for referring to Chinatown in general, they actually refer to the area of Kreta Ayer Road
The street architecture of Chinatown's buildings, the shop houses especially, combine different elements of baroque architecture and Victorian architecture and do not have a single classification. Many of them were built in the style of painted ladies, and have been restored in that fashion. These styles result in a variety of different colours of which pastel is most dominant. Trengganu Street, Pagoda Street and Temple Street are such examples of this architecture, as well as development in Upper Cross Street and the houses in Club Street. Boat Quay was once a slave market along the Singapore River, Boat Quay has the most mixed-style shophouses on the island.
In 1843, when land titles were issued, the terraces in Pagoda Street (now with additions, mostly three-story) were born. They were originally back to back, an arrangement which made night soil collection difficult, but lanes were developed in between following the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) backlane orders of 1935.
The architectural character of many of the terraces in Chinatown is much more Italianate in style than those of, for instance Emerald Hill or Petain Road. Windows often appear as mere slits with narrow timber jalousies (often with adjustable slats). Fanlights over the windows are usually quite decorative and the pilasters and balconies and even the plaster work and colours seem to be Mediterranean in flavour. The style was probably introduced by those early Chinese immigrants (both China-born and Straits-born) who had knowledge of the Portuguese architecture of Macau, Malacca and Goa. The Chettiars and Tamils from Southern India would also have been familiar with the European architecture there, although it is difficult to imagine how these people would have had a particularly strong influence on building in Chinatown.

The most affordable place to do your souvenir shopping is at Pagoda Street, Chinatown. The nearest MRT station is Chinatown. Here you can find wide selection of keychains, ref magnets, shirts, bags and many more.

Singapore Travel Vlog. Singapore 4K Videos. We are visiting Singapore´s Chinatown (including Pagoda Street) which also houses the Sri Mariamann Temple (a Hindu Temple) and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, all of them some of Singapore's Top Attractions! This tour of Singapore´s Chinatown district begins at the main archway to Chinatown at Pagoda Street (the Chinatown shopping street) and South Bridge Road, which is also the location of the Hindu temple which is called the Sri Mariamann Temple.
Before proceeding down the Pagoda Chinatown shopping street we stop to admire the beautifully decorated Sri Mariamann Temple tower. The viewer is then taken on a walking tour down Pagoda Street where they are given an idea of what type of shops are there and the type of restaurants there are to eat at. At the end of Chinatown's Pagoda Street the viewer is given a view of the Chinatown Heritage Center and the location of the Chinatown MRT Station (Mass Rapid Transit - Singapore´s Railway / train system). We (Maxi and Maro) then stop to do some shopping so that we can buy some Bakkwa (Bakkwa, also known as Rougan, is a Chinese salty-sweet dried meat). We then carry on with our tour of Singapore´s Chinatown and walk up Trengganu Street over Smith Street until we arrive at the main Chinatown Food Street. The Chinatown Food street is full of Chinese restaurants offering a diverse selection of Chinese and Singaporean food dishes (Singapore Street Foods). The video footage ends with a tour of Chinatown´s Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum where we go inside and explore the temple and also visit it´s beautiful roof top garden which also houses the Vairocana Buddha Prayer Wheel which is the largest cloisonné Buddha Prayer Wheel in the world.
Chinatown, along with Little India and the Arab Quarter are without doubt some of Singapore´s Top City Attractions.

Singapore's Chinatown | A walking tour | A must visit place this coming Chinese New Year
Chinatown in Singapore is a sharp contrast to the rest of the city, with low rise buildings and culture bursting out onto the streets, from the fragrant smells of traditional cuisine to the bold red and gold tones that run through the neighbourhood.
This is an area that’s proud of its heritage and has it very much on display. There are ornate Chinese, Buddhist and Hindu temples, museums galore and plenty of opportunities to soak up the bustling streets lined with old shophouses.
The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple is a remarkable 4-storey temple. When entering the gate, you’ll immediately notice the stunning main hall with its high ceiling. The bell tower and drum tower are on the same floor.
The main focus for most visitors is the solid gold 2-metre stupa on the 4th floor which is the place where the sacred relic is kept. Continuing up to the roof, there is a pagoda that has a large prayer wheel. The temple is built in a style based on the Buddhist mandala and integrated with the Buddhism of the Tang dynasty.

Chinatown is so different from the rest of Singapore, It is old, feels like China, Small Building, And things are cheaper, Not cheap but cheaper than the rest of the country. This is a nice big market with lots of selection (some good, Some Not so much). Differently worth a visit if you have a bit of spare time some night.
