Chorao Island ~ Villages in Goa ~ Islands In Goa~ Goa Offtrail
The island of Chorao is one of the biggest island of Goa. The population is also big, for an island - 5400 inhabitants.
It was known, long time ago, as the island of fidalgos - Ilha dos Fidalgos - because many nobleman lived here during Portuguese time.
To reach there, from Panjim, you need to take the ferry boat in Ribandar. It is one of the longest crossings but it is worthwhile.
Visit the ilha of Chorao with us.

GOA Chorao Island Trip | HD
#GOA #ISLAND #TRIP
Chorao Island: A Place, its People and a Project To reach Chorao Island, you need to take the ferry ride across from the village of Ribandar, about 5 kms from Panaji, on the road to Old Goa. Most of the western half of this island, is today a reserved area as the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. It is full of dense mangrove swamps and the best way to navigate is by a canoe. The Sanctuary is home to a variety of birds, animals and quite a few muggers - the Goan crocodiles. Another unusual inhabitant is the mudskipper - a mid-sized bulbous headed fish which actually skips through the mud at low tide. The Chorao village on the island is a small collection of mud and thatch houses and some exquisite Portuguese villas. There is also a small village Church. The road through this picturesque village finally leads to the crossing on the other side of the island which takes you to the famous Saptakoteshwar Temple at Narwe on the mainland in Bicholim taluka. If you do visit the temple on the mainland, then on the return trip you can take ferry ride which takes you to Divar Island

Chorao Island: A Place, its People and a Project
Chorao Island, located in Goa’s Mandovi River, has a unique ecological and cultural history, involving many changes to its land and ecology. In 2014, a project titled Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Protected Areas (CMPA) was initiated at Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary . Jointly implemented by MoEFCC, Goa Forest Department and GIZ. By involving the island’s community, the project seeks to create an environmental and economic balance for this ecosystem and its people.
This film was made under the project titled ‘Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Protected Areas (CMPA)’ of the Indo-German Biodiversity Programme. The CMPA Project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), under the International Climate Initiative (IKI). It is implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of BMUB.

Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary | Chorao Island | North Goa | Drone Shots | Dji Spark | The RcBat
The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is situated at Chorao Island on the Mandovi River. It has been named after the famous ornithologist of India, Dr. Salim Ali.
We did just the Boat ride through the mangroves and did not actually take a walk through the sanctuary.
We reached there late at around 12pm. The ideal time to visit this place is between 6:30 am to 8:30 am or at the Sunset time.
The right season to visit is from October to March. So, I guess we were at the wrong time and wrong season. The forest department boat costed around Rs75 per person and the entry fee to the sanctuary was around Rs 20. Cameras, etc are charged extra about Rs 150 to Rs 200.
Although we didn't see much birds around and it had started to pour being the monsoon season, the boat ride through these mangroves was very relaxing and unique and was totally worth the trip.
The guy took us to some common spots where birds are spotted, we did see a Kite sheltering from the rain in the bushes, but that's about it and it wasn't our day or time.
After some time, it stopped raining and the skies although still dark had started to clear off a bit so although I had not really planned, I decided to do a small fly by with my tiny Dji Spark. This video is about what I could get from the two short flights I could manage.
Hope you guys like it.
