The main attraction in Almaty's Panfilov Park is the Russian Orthodox early 20th century Ascension Cathedral, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world (5 months before I had been at Panamaribo's Cathedral, the largest wooden building of the America's).
The church gets mainly visited by Kazakhstan's ethnic Russians. Men are not allowed to wear a hat and almost all women here have their head covered with a scarf. Photography is not allowed inside. The believers make their cross in front of the most venerated icons, especially that of Virgin Mary and of Saint Nicholas. Unlike the Greek Orthodox they also bow their head in front of the icon.
There is a very big gilden iconostasis inside and on the walls there are some frescoes and stained-glass windows. The central cupola, held by pillars, has a flat ceiling. On the outside the cupolas have gilded spires.
In the narthex at the entrance is a shop, which sells candles and icons. Outside the cathedral is a big concrete square with many pigeons

Orthodox Easter Almaty 2012.m4v
A very short clip of the Easter Service at Zenkov's Cathedral in Panfilov Park, Almaty on Sunday, April 15, 2012. All of the music was recorded inside the church. The odd shots are a result of me trying to be respectful and discreet while attempting to both participate and to capture the reverence of the occasion with my camera.
Congratulations on the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan church

Freezing weather in Moscow at Orthodox Christmas
(7 Jan 2017) Temperatures in Moscow dropped to almost -30 C on Saturday as Orthodox believers marked Christmas day.
Not many people braved the outdoors for the many festive events organised across the city, with organisers saying the low turnout was mainly due to the cold.
Some, however, ignored the freezing temperatures and joined in outdoor celebrations including music and dance performances.
According to forecasters, temperatures will remain extremely low for another couple of days.
The weather is set to improve on Tuesday.

138.The monument to Taras Shevchenko
Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) is a Ukrainian poet, novelist, artist and anthropologist. He was very well familiar with Kazakhstan. In 1847 he was sent to serve in army in Orenburg corps in the West of Kazakhstan.
He incurred a severe punishment, he was forbidden to write and paint. He told in his letter dated 1847 about that period, that all his previous sufferings were just childish tears. However during 10 years of his deportation to Kazakhstan he made dozens of paintings showing the life of Kazakhs. Those works are kept in the National Ukraine Museum.
The monument to T.G.Shevchenko was installed in Almaty in 2000. It was a present of the group of Ukrainian sculptors under the direction of Vitaly Rozhikov; it was made in honor of the ninth anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine.
The monument is made of granite taken from Zhytomir region of Ukraine. It is interesting by its unusual design. It is made out of rough stone, as if Taras Shevchenko comes out of it.
There is a engraved signature of the poet on the front side of the monument. The statue of the famous lute player looks on the west side in the direction of the street having his name.

A taste of Moscow's dining scene
(12 Jun 2018) LEADIN:
World Cup football fans will be spoilt for choice when deciding what to eat in Russia.
It's a far cry from the days of beetroot soup and stroganoff - with Moscow a major gourmet destination, showcasing the latest designer food trends.
STORYLINE:
It has some of the best views, and food in Moscow.
White Rabbit restaurant is located on the 16th floor of a building on the brim of the Garden Ring of Moscow.
Through the transparent glass roof, guests can see Moscow's main historic buildings - the Kremlin and skyscrapers such as the Foreign Ministry Building.
The restaurant menu was developed by world-famous chef Vladimir Mukhin and offers a variety of Russian subtle dishes, including cocolardo (cooked coconut pulp), black bread and beluga caviar or ice-cream from lilac and mulberry.
It's a far cry from the stereotypes seen in films showing Soviet-style cafeterias serving stroganoff, beetroot soup or dumplings - all washed down with vodka shots.
The White Rabbit menu is updated regularly, as the restaurant offers seasonal tasting sets.
This month for the World Cup, there is a set of 13 small meals called Russian Evolution, which include sea scallops, cabbage pie, and honey wine. It costs around 9500 rubles (150 U.S. dollars).
Our gastronomic set changes following the season. So even those guests who don't often come to Moscow, for example, twice a year, they are trying different sets, says Anastacia Bulgakova, White Rabbit manager.
The restaurant was featured in Netflix's Chef's Table series and is known for its creativity towards food.
The average bill in the White Rabbit is about 6500 rubles (100 U.S. dollars).
For something more modest, LavkaLavka began with a small online store which offered fresh farm products, including dairy, vegetables, and bread.
Today they have many stores around Moscow and a restaurant not far from the Kremlin.
The idea is similar to serve farm to table products through a variety of modern meals made in a Russian way.
We try to show Russian cuisine from another side. For us, the food is not just food. And we follow this idea in full, says Yuri Sachkov, LavkaLavka manager.
As the restaurant gets full on an average evening, the work in the kitchen is humming.
The menu changes every season and depends on products available from the farmers.
The staff speaks English and is ready to explain each meal as well as provide more information about the farmer who produced it.
And every person who talks to the guest holds some sort of short guided tour into our country by explaining the origin of products, says Yuri Sachkov, LavkaLavka manager.
In our menu, we mention our farmers as well as the country region they work in. We can tell everything about this particular farm and person who holds it. So you know directly who produced this product.
Terraces are on the rise in Moscow, especially for the start of the Summer season. One of them is Strelka Bar located opposite the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour - known for the 'Pussy Riot' band performance - not far from Kremlin.
Strelka Bar is a trendy place popular among young professionals, as well as expats and tourists.
Sitting on its terrace you can enjoy the view on the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and watch the boats passing by along the Moscow river.
The menu of Strelka Bar is mostly European with some Russian meals such as cold kvass soup with vegetables and cooked meat, which can also be served with buttermilk.
