Trellis Lighting at Christopher Columbus Park Nov 2011
The Friends of Christopher Columbus Park and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department hosted the 9th annual lighting of the trellis this week, featuring music by the North End Music and Performing Arts Center Children's Choir and Ray Cavicchio on the accordian. The 260 feet of trellis are bathed in blue with 50,000 lights. In addition, the Kennedy Rose Garden is decorated with lights and bows, as are several trees in the park.
Speaking at the lighting were Boston's First Lady, Angela Menino, Boston Parks Commissioner Antonia M. Pollak, FOCCP President, Joanne Hayes-Rines and NEMPAC's Executive Director Rebecca Griffin. NEMPAC's Children's Choir sang several holiday songs along with bell ringing and a sing-a-long. Starbucks personnel from 2 Atlantic Ave. served coffee and hot chocolate at the event.
The Friends of Christopher Columbus Park (foccp.org) is an all-volunteer group that supports the lighting through their annual fundraising gala and donations.
Short cut: The trellis lighting itself is at 15:00 in the video.

Columbus Day 2011 - Christopher Columbus Park Celebrations
This video captures the family-friendly Columbus Day celebrations at Christopher Columbus Park, organized by the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park (FOCCP.org) on Sunday, October 9, 2011. Several neighborhood groups joined in with tables and events for neighborhood families to enjoy. NEMPAC ran their famous face-painting table, the Friends of the North End Branch Library were represented and there were lawn games early in the day led by FOCCP members using the Greenway Conservancy's activity cart.
Organized events included theater in the park by City Stage Players performing an interactive children's play, Tall Tales of a Tall Ship. The Wayne Martin Puppets brought lots of fun for the kids followed by amazing tricks by magician Peter O'Malley.
Leading up to the launch of the North End Parade, Grand Marshall Mayor Thomas M. Menino and other dignitaries gave a tribute at the statue of Christopher Columbus. Local officials were well represented with State Senator Anthony Petruccelli, State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz, City Councilor Sal LaMattina and Councilors Felix Arroyo, John Connolly, Tito Jackson, Stephen Murphy and Ayanna Pressley. At the end of the video, a surprise guest also added some entertainment value before the officials and FOCCP leaders headed out for the parade.

North End Columbus Day Parade 2011
Boston's North End Columbus Day Parade 2011
The bi-annual North End Columbus Day Parade was held on Sunday, October 9th, featuring dignitaries, marching bands and community organizations. Through a massive street cleaning (and towing) effort, the neighborhood was spotless!
This year, the parade was held in honor of the late Michael Nazzaro, former State Representative of the North End. The parade started at Christopher Columbus Park after a morning of family friendly events that entertained over a hundred neighborhood children.
Grand Marshal Mayor Thomas M. Menino led a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Christopher Columbus with local officials including State Senator Anthony Petruccelli, State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz and City Councilor Sal LaMattina. Several other City Councilors also marched in the parade. A look-a-like politician surprised the Mayor for some added fun (see the video).
The parade winded through the North End streets including Atlantic Ave., Commercial St., Hanover St., Cross and Endicott St. There were several marching bands, dignitaries,
Congratulations to the North End Columbus Day Parade Committee: Louis Strazzullo (Chair), Matt Bamonte, Jason Aluia and Blake Webber. The parade is in East Boston next year and will return to the North End in 2013.
