Tour of Basilica of Our Lady in Licheń, The Largest Church in Poland,
7 STEPS TO DISCOVERING AND LIVING YOUR LIFE'S INSPIRED MISSION:
PROGRAM YOUR MIND FOR SUCCESS:
The Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń [ˈlixɛɲ] is a Roman Catholic church located in the village of Licheń Stary near Konin in the Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poland. It was designed by Barbara Bielecka and built between 1994 and 2004. The construction was funded by pilgrims' donations.[1] With a tower measuring 141.5 meters in height, it is one of the tallest and largest churches in the world.
The history of the foundation of the church dates back to 1813, when Tomasz Kłossowski a Polish soldier fighting under Napoleon near Leipzig was seriously wounded. He invoked Our Lady, begging her not to let him die in a foreign land. According to legend, she appeared to him wearing a golden crown, a dark red gown, with a golden mantle, and holding a white eagle in her right hand. She comforted the soldier and promised he would recover and return to Poland.[2] Tomasz was instructed him to have an image of her made, and to place the image in a public place so that My people will pray before this image and shall draw many graces at My hands in the hardest times of trial.[3]
With the nave 120 meters long and 77 meters wide, with a central dome 98 meters high, and with a tower 141.5 metres tall, it is Poland's largest church and one of the largest churches in the world. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, Queen of Poland whose icon, perhaps dating back to the 18th century, is displayed in the basilica's main altar. It is one of Poland's principal pilgrimage sites.[4]
Pope John Paul II blessed the Basilica in 1999.[5]

Catholicism (from Greek καθολικισμός, katholikismos, universal doctrine) is a term which in its broadest sense refers to the beliefs and practices of Christian churches that understand and describe themselves as being Catholic within the universal and apostolic church.
The most frequent uses refer to the faith and practices of the Catholic Church, consisting of the Latin Church and 23 Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with the Holy See of Rome, as understood by the Four Marks of the Church.[1] Catholic and Catholicism are also especially used by some other churches, such as the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox Church, the Church of the East, and Anglican, Independent Catholic churches.
In the sense of indicating continuity of faith and practice from the first millennium, catholic is also used in some other Christian traditions, such as some Methodist[2] Lutheran,[3] Moravian,[4] and Reformed churches,[5] in claiming to be heirs of the apostolic faith,[6] as delineated in the Nicene Creed.[7] These denominations consider themselves to be catholic, teaching that the term designates the historic, orthodox mainstream of Christianity whose doctrine was defined by the ecumenical councils and creeds and as such, most Reformers appealed to this catholic tradition and believed they were in continuity with it.[3] For instance, within the Anglican Communion, the Oxford Movement of the 19th century promoted Anglo-Catholicism, which emphasized the importance of doctrines such as the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and apostolic succession.[8][9]
Poland:
Poland is a country in Central Europe.[9] It is on the east of Germany (along Oder and Lusatian Neisse). The Czech Republic and Slovakia are to the south, Ukraine and Belarus to the east, and the Baltic Sea, Lithuania, and Russia to the north. The total land area of Poland is about 312,679 km2[10] (120,728 mi2), slightly larger than Oman. This makes Poland the 77th largest country [10] in the world with over 38.5 million people. Most Polish people live in large cities, including the capital, Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa), Łódź, Cracow (Polish: Kraków), the second capital of Poland (first was Gniezno), Szczecin, Gdańsk, Wrocław and Poznań.
The word Poland was written officially for the first time in 966. In 1569, Poland formed a strong union with Lithuania called the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At some point in its history, it was the largest state in Europe and became very influential. Much of the territory that now makes up Central European states used to belong to that Commonwealth. Eventually, after a slow decline, the Commonwealth collapsed in 1795. Poland regained its independence in 1918 after World War I. In 1921, Poland defeated Soviet Russia in the Polish-Soviet War that started in 1919.
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.

St. Mary's Basilica, Kraków, Poland - 23rd May, 2014
Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven (also known as St. Mary's Church) is a Brick Gothic church re-built in the 14th century (originally built in the early 13th century), adjacent to the Main Market Square in Kraków, Poland. Standing 80 m (262 ft) tall, it is particularly famous for its wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz).
On every hour, a trumpet signal—called the Hejnał mariacki—is played from the top of the taller of St. Mary's two towers. The plaintive tune breaks off in mid-stream, to commemorate the famous 13th century trumpeter, who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm before the Mongol attack on the city.
This film features footage of St. Mary's Basilica from both the outside and within. Outside shots highlight the architecture from the Market Square, the side and behind the building. Inside the elaborate gold and multi-coloured decor magnificently decorate this cavernous building.

The Black Madonna of Poland
The shrine of Czestochowa is found in the heart of Poland. A highlight of Marian devotion, it attracts four to five million pilgrims each year from 80 countries worldwide. The icon of the Black Madonna and Child goes back to medieval tradition. According to historians, the painting follows the model of Byzantine iconography: it is an Odigitria icon, that is to say, the image of one that points out and guides all along the path. A legend attributes the creation of this painting to St. Luke, who was a contemporary of Mary, and so could reproduce her true image. In 1382 the icon was brought to the hill of Jasna Gora, which means Bright Mountain in Polish and overlooks Czestochowa. At Prince Władysław of Opole's initiative, a hilltop monastery was built for the Pauline monks. The Child's face is turned towards the pilgrim. But Her gaze is elsewhere, as if looking into the distance, beyond time and space. Both the Mother and the Son seemed immersed in thought, yielding an aura of wisdom. The brown color of their skin contrasts with the bright surroundings. Mary shows the Child Jesus to the pilgrim, and the Christ Child holds a book in one hand, and with the other gives a simple yet noble gesture of blessing. In every moment of difficulty of Poland, the population has huddled around the Black Madonna of Czestochowa and the child Jesus, this merely increases the influx of pilgrims. Even today, tens of thousands of people walk to the shrine each summer. The image is dark .. made even darker by the smoke of candles that continuously burn before the icon. Karol Wojtyla himself visited frequently as a pilgrimage to the shrine, especially in 1936, along with many other university students who pledged to build a new Poland with the help of the Virgin. Prayer: Our Lady of Czestochowa, Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Mother of those who place their hope in Divine Providence, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Mother of those who are deceived, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Mother of those who are betrayed, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Mother of those who are imprisoned, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Mother of those who suffer from cold, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Mother of those who are afraid, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Poland Mother of the suffering, pray for us. Our Lady of Czestochowa, Poland Mother of the faithful, pray for us. Pray for us, Our Lady of Czestochowa, That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Poland 2019
I recently took a trip through a Rutgers Study Abroad program to Poland with my professor. Before the trip, I and my other classmates had the chance to learn in an interdisciplinary honors seminar about Polish and Jewish history beginning hundreds of years ago. In May 2019, we took a ten-day trip with Taube Center for Jewish Studies, and traveled to different locations within Kraków, Warsaw, and Gdańsk. We also had a mishap with flights in the beginning of our trip, so we ended up spending a day in Frankfurt, Germany. Even though it wasn't apart of our itinerary, I thought it was too beautiful of a city not to add into the video. In this video, you'll see spots, such as:
Kraków:
Jewish Ghetto
Old Town
Podgórze
Kazimierz Quarter
Nowa Huta
Central Square
Our Lady Queen of Poland Church
The Rose Avenue
Warsaw:
Warsaw's Old Town
Warsaw University
POLIN Museum
Jewish Historical Institute
Warsaw Uprising Veterans
Ringelblum Archives
Gdańsk:
Solidarity Movement Museum
Westerplatte
Długi Targ (Long Market)
St.Mary's Church
Polish Post
Golden Gate
City Hall
WWII Museum
Sopot
Hopefully this video gives you some inspiration to visit such an amazing country that holds unimaginable amounts of history.
Thanks for watching!

JASNA GORA MONASTERY - HOME OF THE BLACK MADONNA
Czestochowa is a city known all over the world for the miraculous icon of the Black Madonna housed in the Pauline Monastery of Jasna Gora. The city is located in south Poland, 125 km (approx. 77 mi) from Krakow.
Czestochowa has medieval origins. In 14th century the town became an important trade centre on the route from Russia to Lower Silesia and Saxony. Nevertheless, its development has been always related to the Pauline Monastery of Jasna Gora (Bright Hill) founded in 1382 by the Polish Piast prince of Upper Silesia, Wladyslaw Opolczyk. When the monastery received the famous painting of the Black Madonna it became an important religious and pilgrimage centre. In the 17th century the monastery was turned into a fortress and played a vital role during The Deluge in 1655 when it proved to be an efficient point of Polish resistance against the Swedish invasion. The Black Madonna was credited with miraculously saving the monastery and since it actually changed the course of the war, King John Casimir Vasa declared Our Lady of Czestochowa a Queen and Protector of Poland and “crowned” the icon. At the beginning of 19th century the Holy Virgin Mary Avenue was constructed, around which new houses and shops were built and which is now the main arterial road of the city. Nowadays, Czestochowa is a cultural centre and one of the main tourist attractions of the area. Besides the monastery, there are also museums, theatres, libraries, historical monuments and ruins of a medieval castle in Olsztyn located around 25 kilometres (ca. 16 mi) from the city centre. The town attracts millions of tourists and pilgrims every year.
The main purpose for visiting Czestochowa is certainly the presence of the Black Madonna icon in the Monastery of the Pauline Fathers of Jasna Gora. The altar of the gothic chapel houses a miraculous painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus in her arms. The Virgin is dressed in a blue veil covered with golden fleur-de-lis. The origins of the icon are still being discussed. The painting was possibly brought to Czestochowa from Jerusalem via Constantinople and Belz by Wladyslaw Opolczyk. Other hypothesis states that it could have been brought by the Pauline monks from their founding monastery in Hungary. There are several legends concerning the Black Madonna. One of them explains the darkened complexion of the Virgin’s face: once the church got on fire, the flames however did not manage to destroy it thanks to the presence of the holy painting; they only affected Madonna’s face. According to another legend, the two scars on the Virgin’s right cheek appeared as a result of the Hussites plundering of the sanctuary in 1430. One of the robbers struck the painting twice with a sword but the face of the Black Madonna started to bleed. Terrified he ran away (or fell to the ground and died, optionally).
The icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa has been a destination of numerous pilgrimages from all over the world. An average of 4-5 million pilgrims come each year with their thanks, pleas and prayers, many of them on foot. There are several pilgrimage routes in Poland, of which the longest one is over 600 km (approx. 373 mi) long and it takes 20 days to cover the distance. The oldest pilgrimage in Poland arrives from Warsaw every August 15th, on the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A few days later, on August 26th, all other pilgrimages arrive to celebrate the day of Our Holy Mother of Czestochowa. Many Polish Catholics make a pilgrimage there every year.
Ceremony in a church in Krakow
It was some sort of anniversary either for the church, the precinct, or the city of Krakow--my Polish wasn't good enough to really tell what was going on. But there's all these glimmering bayonets inside the church.
Makes you understand how they managed to lose the war so quickly: they train in a church.
Side note: doesn't stop the Muslims.
