The first of the year's major feasts is celebrated in the Parish Church of St. Paul Shipwrecked in Valletta and in the streets of Malta's capital city. It commemorates the shipwreck of the Apostle St. Paul on the Maltese Islands, an event which took place in 60 AD and which is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles.

Held every year in Valletta, the Feast of St Paul's Shipwreck remembers the saint's miracles after he took refuge on the island. A procession carries his statue through the streets accompanied by marching bands and fireworks.
In 60 AD, St Paul, patron Saint of Malta, performed a number of miracles during his stay on the island, including the healing of Publius' father, the Roman governor. Tradition has it that when Publius became the first bishop of Malta, St Paul converted the Maltese to Christianity.
1950th Anniversary of St. Paul's Shipwreck in Malta
During 2010 Malta celebrated the 1950th Anniversary of St. Paul's arrival on the islands when the ship that was taking him to Rome was shipwrecked in rough seas in 60AD. St. Paul has since been credited with the conversion of the Maltese to Christianity and has been venerated throughout Malta and Gozo as the father of the Maltese. Valletta joined the celebrations with a week of activities that culminated in a procession with the Saint's statue and relic from the Collegiate Parish Church of St. Paul's Shipwreck through the streets of Valletta on 17th October. The statue was carried for the first time to the area known as 'L-Arcipiergu' (the Archipelago), beneath the Lower Barrakka Gardens overlooking Grand Harbour, where a ceremony was held next to the Great Siege Bell. This video follows the statue through the streets on that day to the accompaniment of marches played by the band of the La Valette National Philharmonic Society.
