Church of La Santa Maria de la Alhambra (Granada)

A small, but lovely church. It might seem austere from the outside but it hides a beautifully decorated Baroque altar inside.

Spain Trip 2017 #6 Granada's Alhambra: Catholic Period
Following the Reconquista in 1492, the Alhambra became the Royal Court for the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. In fact, it was here that Christopher Columbus received royal endorsement for his expedition to the New World. While much of the Alhambra’s Moorish structure was retained, new buildings were added including the Monastery of San Francisco. Since the surrender of the Alhambra represented the culmination of the Reconquista, Ferdinand and Isabella chose to be buried here in a humble courtyard within the monastery, although their bodies were later moved to the far more elaborate Royal Chapel in town. The Church of Santa Maria was added in 1581 on the site of the former mosque. After the death of Ferdinand and Isabella, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V continued to use the Nasrid Palaces as his residence, but he also commissioned a new Renaissance palace for official functions, noted for its circular courtyard surrounded by marble columns. The video concludes with a series of still photos taken by my wife, Pam.
Spain Trip 2017 #7 Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel
The Cathedral of Granada is the second largest church in Spain. It was begun in the early 1500’s, shortly after the Reconquista, when Granada was the capital of the new worldwide Spanish Empire. But the abundance of gold leaf on the altar is not from the new world -- it’s from the local Darro River which is what originally attracted the Romans to the area. Flanking the altar on either side are busts of Adam and Eve in the round niches, and below them, the kneeling monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, architects of the Reconquista and sponsors of the new empire. The statue of St James the Moor-Slayer is a vivid reminder that the Reconquista culminated here in Granada. On display are the giant music books used by medieval choirs with beautifully decorated sheets of 16th c. Gregorian chant. The adjoining Royal Chapel is the final resting place of Ferdinand and Isabella (photography is not permitted inside so the images are from the internet). The video ends with a series of still photos taken by my wife, Pam.

I was in earnest explore the Gothic Quarter, Old Town acquaintances. The first place to hang away is the Santa Maria del Mar Gothic church built in the 14th century. People dressed in jaunty entrance to the church had gathered samsamohoh. Unfortunately, the wedding was called after already finished. But people were getting something by hand was just a handful of rice. And he said throwing rice thing that means so much to put the child in a few minutes. Meet people and throwing people and everyone is feeling good day.

Granada, Spain - Alhambra Cathedral
The Alhambra was so called because of its reddish walls (in Arabic, («qa'lat al-Hamra'» means Red Castle). It is located on top of the hill al-Sabika, on the left bank of the river Darro, to the west of the city of Granada and in front of the neighbourhoods of the Albaicin and of the Alcazaba.
The first historical documents known about the Alhambra date from the 9th century and they refer toSawwar ben Hamdun who, in the year 889, had to seek refuge in the Alcazaba, a fortress, and had to repair it due to the civil fights that were destroying the Caliphate of Cordoba, to which Granada then belonged. This site subsequently started to be extended and populated, although not yet as much as it would be later on, because the Ziri kings established their residence on the hill of the Albaicin.
The castle of the Alhambra was added to the city's area within the ramparts in the 9th century, which implied that the castle became a military fortress with a view over the whole city. In spite of this, it was not until the arrival of the first king of the Nasrid dynasty, Mohammed ben Al-Hamar (Mohammed I, 1238-1273), in the 13th century, that the royal residence was established in the Alhambra. This event marked the beginning of the Alhambra's most glorious period.
First of all, the old part of the Alcazaba was reinforced and the Watch Tower (Torre de la Vela) and theKeep (Torre del Homenaje) were built. Water was canalised from the river Darro, warehouses and deposits were built and the palace and the ramparts were started. These two elements were carried on by Mohammed II (1273-1302) and Mohammed III (1302-1309), who apparently also built public baths and the Mosque(Mezquita), on the site of which the current Church of Saint Mary was later built.
Yusuf I (1333-1353) and Mohammed V (1353-1391) are responsible for most of the constructions of the Alhambra that we can still admire today. From the improvements of the Alcazaba and the palaces, to thePatio of the Lions (Patio de los Leones) and its annexed rooms, including the extension of the area within the ramparts, the Justice Gate (Puerta de la Justicia), the extension and decoration of the towers, the building of the Baths (Baños), the Comares Room (Cuarto de Comares) and the Hall of the Boat (Sala de la Barca). Hardly anything remains from what the later Nasrid Kings did.
Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe (UNESCO/NHK)
The monastery is an outstanding repository of four centuries of Spanish religious architecture. It symbolizes two significant events in world history that occurred in 1492: the Reconquest of the Iberian peninsula by the Catholic Kings and Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas. Its famous statue of the Virgin became a powerful symbol of the Christianization of much of the New World.

Lastly visited places bangyida of two sisters that most colorful in the Alhambra. Because of the large marble laid on the floor in two chapters called here the room of two sisters. Is it because the women who use the room? Gopgo ceiling pattern also elegant. Decor looks like lace. Faint light coming through the window. Which means they did the oral addition to this room owner? A bunch of misty moss yigotdo wondered. Called basement bathroom. There was perforated with star shaped ceiling, skylight roof thick round and was making all of the incoming light to indirect light. Is it because the moisture to overcome? Inside the bathroom tile patterns rather than caught a lot of eyes. Wall tiling is attached to the bottom of the tea ceremony but did you than just tiles originated from here. There are several spaces inside the bathroom. Should that there is a secret room? Even in a small voice whispered lovers delighted to see you clearly hear the other side jeonggyeopda.

On our way from Plaza de Espana to the hotel in the old town, we pass the university, the Glorieta de San Diego and an exhibition pavilion, built for the Ibero-American Exhibition in 1929. After almost 3 weeks in Spain we urgently need a laundromat. We ask at the reception and one refers us to the department store El Corte Ingles, which is not too far away. Grabbing the laundry in a wheeled suitcase and go. We cross the Espacio Metropol Parasol and take Calle Laranna and Calle Martin Villa to Placa del Duque de la Victoria. We pass the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University, which is housed in a magnificent castle-like building. We have no luck. In the basement of El Corte Ingles is a cleaning but no laundromat. However we rely on the friendly staff who told us that we will find one in the Calle Goles.
We continue our way, have a look at the the Velazquez Monument and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla at Plaza del Museo.
At the Plaza de Armas with its huge halls for the Mercado and the Centro Commercial we begin to ask residents to the laundromat. Nobody knows one! A postwoman approached us. She ought to know the neighborhood, but she also didn't know one.
Frustrated we made the way back our hotel. In the Calle Alfonso XII we see a business travel agency and we still need tickets for the Alhambra in Granada. We read on the Internet that it is hard to get some and one should book early in advance. We had already tried, but in vain. Everything seems to be sold out for our travel dates!
Here we were lucky! We actually got two tickets for € 50 each. That seems expensive, but better safe than sorry. In Granada it should prove to be an error (see in a later report on Granada).
Then we asked if someone knows a laundromat in the city. In fact, a young man found one on the internet!
We took a taxi and drove to the indicated address and we were successful. It was a good one! (Washing 30 min €4,- , drying 20 min € 2,-)
In the Ronda de Capuchinos, on the ground floor next to a gas station of La Ronda Estacion de Servicios SA, is the laundromat with industrial washing machines and dryers. It is probably the only laundromat in Seville!
Since it would last about 1 hour we have time to take a walk.
