Vilnius, Lithuania. The Baroque Church of St. Casimir
Travel Lithuania - Visiting St. Casimir Cathedral in Vilnius
Take a tour of St. Casimir Cathedral in Vilnius, Lithuania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
St. Casimir Cathedral is a beautiful baroque sanctuary in the town of Vilnius, Lithuania.
Construction started on the cathedral in 1604 and it was officially consecrated in 1635 when Roman Catholicism was dominant in Vilnius.
Between 1963 and 1988, the church experienced a phase of irreligion in which it was transformed into an atheist museum.
The stunning 40 meter cupola atop this cathedral features the architectural gold embellished crown of the Duke of Lithuania.
In 1988, the town of Vilnius decided to identify the church as a Catholic sanctuary once again.
St. Casimir Cathedral is now a site of pilgrimage as well as a magnificent destination.
Concert at St Casimir Vilnius
We heard this concert at the lovely church of St Casimir. The organist, Aivars Kalejs, was from Latvia and the soprano, Martina Doehring, was from Germany. The programme included a couple of songs by G. F. Handel, a sonata by D. Scarlatti and two songs by A. Scarlatti, a song by A. Vivaldi, songs by H. R. Bishop, F. Chopin, W. A. Mozart, C. Saint-Saens and F. Schubert's Ave Maria, a fantasia by J. G. Muthel and two pieces by J. S. Bach, Prelude in E flat major and the song Jesus bleibet meine Freude. The organist also played two of his own compositions, including a Laughing Song. This video presents two of the above (Bach and Schubert) and the encore, which we haven't identified.
As usual the performers were up the top where we couldn't see them. The church was packed, but we were able to squeeze into a pew. A lot of people were standing throughout the show. It was a very enjoyable hour, well worth the walk from the hostel.

St Anne's Church, Vilnius, Lithuania - 18th January, 2013
St. Anne's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Vilnius' Old Town, on the right bank of the Vilnia River. It is a prominent example of both Flamboyant Gothic and Brick Gothic styles. St. Anne's is a prominent landmark in the Old Town of Vilnius that enabled the district to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The church has one nave and two towers. It was built using 33 different kinds of clay bricks and painted in red. The interior is decorated in the Baroque style, as is its altar. The imitative neo-Gothic bell tower, constructed in the 1870s to Chagin's designs, stands nearby.
This film features both external and internal views of the church, with particular attention to the architecture and decor.

The Composer wanted to use means of musical expression to draw the all-time most famous St. Casimir's picture, convey the only saint Lithuanian patron's eternal spiritual and moral values. It is also one of the patrons of Poland. In the middle of Daugela's chorale fantasy, there is a quote of the hymn Pulkim ant Keliu (Fall on your knees) by Antanas Strazdas (1760 -- 1833).

Churches, Old Jewish Ghetto and More in Vilnius, Lithuania
A person could go church crazy in Vilnius. St. Casimirs, St. Theresa, St. Anne, Bernardine Church, Church of Holy Mother of God, Church of St. Johns, Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit - and these are just the important ones.
We now headed into the old Jewish Ghetto that once had 11 synagogues on just one street!. Vilnius was more than 40% Jewish before World War II and there is a monument to the Japanese Consul, Chiune Sugihara who rescued Jews at this terrible time.
A short chow break for energy before continuing on...
