SHRINE OF DIVINE MERCY Krakow, Lagiewniki, Poland
Tour Overview
Visit the place that was the destination of three papal pilgrimages and one of the central spots of the World Youth Day 2016 held in Krakow. Travel to Lagiewniki district of Krakow to see one of the most sacred places of Poland – a modern basilica located where St. Faustina Kowalska had her holy visions experienced. Admire the Divine Mercy image, visit the tomb of St. Faustina at a neo-Gothic monastery and the Pope John Paul II Have no Fear! Centre.
Lagiewniki is one of Krakow's districts and the place where the Catholic tradition of Poland has one of its most significant roots. Millions of visitors come to the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in this part of Southern Poland to experience their spiritual renewal at the boat-resembling building of the shrine, erected between 1999 and 2002. Its aim was to commemorate the healing miracles taking place on the site, with regard to the altar exposed within the older part of the complex. Spending a few hours in Lagiewniki is an attractive option for those who happen to visit Krakow and may devote some time to collect more soul-soothing experiences.
The history of the Divine Mercy Sanctuary is full of deep mysticism. St. Faustina Kowalska, one of the members of the convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, gave her instructions concerning the creation of the Divine Mercy image upon witnessing the vision of Jesus in 1931. The painting is now present at the altar of the basilica, depicting Jesus Christ in the shape St. Faustina reported to have witnessed, with the famous Jesus, I trust in you inscription. The bright and impressive shrine, except for the large sanctuary housing the miraculous altar, also invites its visitors to the chapel of St. Faustina, where requests for divine help are made through her grace.
The relics of the Saint's body are entombed in a coffin of marble at the adjacent St. Joseph chapel – part of the historic complex of the convent's monastery. The tower of the Divine Mercy Sanctuary is where an excellent panorama of Krakow stretches from. You may spot the Pope John Paul II Have no Fear! Centre from the top of it, being particularly recommended for a visit to Catholic guests of the Sanctuary.

73rd Annual Christmas Crib Competition in Krakow, Poland
December 3rd marks the 73rd Annual Kraków Christmas Crib Competition & Exhibition. What on earth is this, pray tell? One of Kraków’s most unique and singular Christmas traditions is the popular creation of ‘Christmas cribs’ or ‘szopki’ as they’re known locally. Something of a strange cross between a nativity scene, gingerbread house and dollhouse, szopki are the bizarre result of a slowly evolving folk tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. Originally used as mini puppet theatres upon which morality plays were performed during the holiday season, szopki gradually became more whimsical, secular and satirical in nature, leading to an ironic ban on them on church property in the 1700s and a prohibition against their construction in the 19th century by which time they had developed into a powerful political tool used in the cafes and cabarets of the Old Town to criticise the occupying powers. Upon Poland’s return to the world map after World War I, the szopki tradition was re-embraced becoming the celebrated custom it is today.
Popularised as a way for 19th century masons and other craftsmen to make some extra money during the drizzly autumn months, szopki are now made by all walks of life; in fact szopki dynasties have developed as generations of the same family build new elaborate szopki every year. Using a variety of lightweight materials and covering them with coloured foil, ribbon and other shiny bits, a typical szopka is bright and cheerful and attempts to integrate the city’s topography into the traditional Bethlehem nativity scene. Though called ‘Christmas cribs’ in English, szopki look more like castles or cathedrals (in fact they in absolutely no way resemble cribs), the general rule being that they incorporate characteristics of Kraków’s range of historic architectural styles.

Kraków St. Joseph's Church, Podgórze - 2nd Christmas day - [26.12.2019]
Zamoyskiego 2, 30-523 Kraków
St. Joseph's Church (Polish: Kościół św. Józefa) is a historic Catholic church in
Kraków, Poland. It is located on Podgórski Square on the northern slopes of the Krzemionki foothills in the south-central part of the city.
The church was built between 1905 and 1909, and designed by Jan Sas Zubrzycki in the Gothic Revival style. It is the largest church in the area.
The interior of the church is shaped in the likeness of a Gothic cathedral in the so-called Gothic Vistula style. It is filled with numerous altars, benches and other items made mostly of wood. Work on the fittings lasted for years.
In the postwar period, the locations of some of the altars and pulpits were changed, as well as a bricked arcade between an ambulatory and the former chapel of the Sacred Heart (now Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Eternal Adoration). The altars created first were the main chapel (in the sanctuary) and the Annunciation (formerly in the right arm of the transept). Work on them was from 1908 to 1909.
The main altar originally consisted of the tabernacle and statues of Saint Joseph. In main altar in the west (right) arm of the transept stands the altar of the Annunciation. There are 5 other main altars.

STORYLINE:
The Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow contains the cathedral where Pope John Paul II celebrated his first mass as a priest.
John Paul celebrated his first ever mass in the cathedral chapel on 2 November 1946.
The cathedral's priest, Roman Ledzki, says the event is commemorated every year on 2 November with a special service.
When he became pope, John Paul II initially wanted to be named after the patron saint of Krakow, Stanislas, who is buried in the cathedral.
Instead, the then 58-year-old former Cardinal of Krakow took the name Pope John Paul II and became the first non-Italian pope in 455 years.
The cathedral, whose priest describes it as the most important church in Poland, is the burial place of Polish kings and other notables.
It is also where John Paul would be buried if he were to be interred in Poland.
Formerly known as Karol Joseph Wojtyla, the pope was born in Wadowice Poland on May 18, 1920 and was named Cardinal of Krakow at the age of 47.
Cardinal Wojtyla began to work to promote political change in Poland, an activity he would continue as Pope.

20 Things to do in Kraków, Poland Travel Guide video transcript:
We kicked off this trip to Poland with a visit to Krakow, a city people have been telling us to visit for years and now we know why. Krakow in the summertime was wonderful! We spent our time enjoying castle views from the river side, exploring neighbourhoods covered in street art, eating some of the best pierogie of our lives, and also discovering what we think may be the best ice cream. The following is our travel guide to some of the best things to do in Krakow!
Wawel Castle is Krakow's crowning jewel, and for centuries it was the residence of the kings of Poland. You can see a mix of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture all in one place.
While in the city, we also had to walk the Royal Route, which was once the historic coronation path of Polish kings.
After visiting the basilica, we spent a bit of time walking the Main Square, which just so happens to be Europe's largest medieval town square.
And that’s it for our visit to Krakow! We hope this video gave you a few ideas of things to do around the city. If you have any other places to add to this list or any tips for fellow travellers visiting Krakow feel free to share those.
This is part of our Travel in Poland video series showcasing Polish food, Polish culture, Polish cuisine while visiting Kraków Polska.
