Heilbronn is a city on the Neckar River in southwest Germany. St. Kilian Church dates back to the 13th century, with an octagonal Renaissance tower and a Gothic altarpiece. The Town Hall facade has a 16th-century astronomical clock. North in the Neckar Valley, the late-medieval Guttenberg Castle has a museum and live birds of prey. East of the city, the area around Lake Breitenau has trails and vineyards.
More than 1,200 years in the making, Heilbronn on the Neckar River has a few strings to its bow. The city is Württemberg’s wine capital, and has a wine festival in September that pulls in hundreds of thousands of people. Heilbronn also has the heritage you’d expect from a former Imperial Free City, and this is waiting for you inside the Gothic St Kilian’s Church, where there’s a Late Gothic altarpiece of breathtaking beauty.
The banks of the Neckar are as picturesque as they come, especially in the green south Heilbronn around the Wertwiesenpark. And if you’re clued up on German literature, you can come to the Medieval tower where Götz von Berlichingen, the hero of Goethe’s drama was held captive.
Heilbronn’s main historic building, St Kilian’s Church is a Gothic hall church made from Heilbronn’s sandstone. On the gable of Heilbronn town hall’s old Renaissance facade is a fantastic piece of 16th-century workmanship by Isaak Habrecht who also designed the clock at Strasbourg Cathedral. The clock has three faces: At the top, below the bell is the moon clock, displaying the phases of the moon over 30 days.
After gazing at the Astronomical Clock on Marktplatz you can also come around to the southwest corner of the square to appreciate this beautiful Gothic house of Käthchenhaus dating to the 14th century. Experimenta is an interactive science centre and laboratory that opened in a former warehouse on Kraneninsel, between the Wilhelmskanal and the Neckar in 2003. Using 150 interactive exhibits, the museum dealt with topics like communication, renewable energy and transport technology.
At the former Bundesbahn locomotive depot in Heilbronn’s Böckingen district is a museum with a small fleet of locomotives and wagons, mostly from the first half of the 20th century. This former commandery of Deutschhof for the Teutonic Order goes back to the 1200s and has some of the oldest surviving architecture in Heilbronn. After Heilbronn was taken by the Electorate of Württemberg in 1805 the complex had all sorts of uses, becoming a barracks, court and then a government building.
Drawing on Heilbronn’s municipal archives, the Haus der Stadtgeschichte is a neatly presented museum about the history of the city. The oldest park of Pfühlpark in Heilbronn dates back to 1575 when the foundation stone for the Trappenseeschlösschen was laid. The little palace of Trappenseeschlösschen in the Trappensee deserves a bit more attention.
In front of the church on Kilainsplatz is a fountain that is as old as the city itself. The name “Siebenröhren” comes from the fountain’s seven pipes, and the fountain sits under a Renaissance pavilion from the 1540s with vaults and a gable. Right on the Neckar, Heilbronn’s other inviting park was started in 1982 to be ready for Baden-Württemberg Landesgartenschau (State Garden Show) in 1985. People visit to amble on either bank of the river, which you can cross on a footbridge, and to have barbecues in the designated area on summer evenings.
Two towers from Heilbronn’s once fearsome defensive walls have made it to the present day. The Bollwerksturm (Bulwark Tower) dates from the Hohenstaufen dynasty in the 11th and 12th centuries and was on the northwest corner of the city wall. The Botanischer Obstgarten came about in the 1850s to combat some of the social ills that had come with industrialisation. Around the tower there’s a small playground and the Wartberggaststätte, a restaurant that first opened in 1760 and counts Goethe among its former guests.

Würzburg Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany, dedicated to Saint Kilian. It is the seat of the Bishop of Würzburg and has served as the burial place for the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg for hundreds of years. With an overall length of 103 metres, it is reckoned to be the fourth largest Romanesque church building in Germany, and a masterpiece of German architecture from the Salian period. Notable later additions include work by Tilman Riemenschneider and Balthasar Neumann. The cathedral was heavily damaged by British bombs in March 1945 but rebuilt post-World War II.
The present cathedral was built from 1040 onwards by Bishop Bruno of Würzburgis. It likely was the third church on the site: the previous two, built in about 787 and 855, were respectively destroyed and severely damaged by fire. After Bruno's accidental death in 1045, his successor Adalbero completed the building in 1075. Due to several rebuildings, notably after 1133, the cathedral was only consecrated in 1187. This church already had the strong cross lay-out still present today: a long nave with a high choir, the broad transept and the two narrow western towers.
The greater part of the building collapsed in the winter of 1946 in consequence of the fire bombing of Würzburg on 16 March 1945. Reconstruction was completed in 1967, in the course of which the Baroque components were removed in favour of a re-Romanisation. The new interpretation emphasizes the contrast between the surviving historical parts of the structure, resulting in a sometimes controversial combination of predominantly Romanesque with modern and Baroque elements. The Romanesque Revival west front with a rose window, the tripartite gallery and the opening for the clock were combined during the reconstruction with a plain pumice stone wall, and revealed again during renovation work up to November 2006. In 1988 the choir was redesigned by Hubert Elsässer.

St. Pankratius Dossenheim/ Mittagsläuten
Die im Jahr 1926 im neobarocken Stil erbaute Pfarrkirche St. Pankratius in Dossenheim verfügt über ein sehr imposantes sechs-stimmiges h°-Geläut der Glockengießerei Bachert in Karlsruhe. Alle Glocken -bis auf die kleinste-wurden im Jahre 1950 gegossen. Glocke 6. hingegen 1920.

h°, d`, e`, g`, a`, h`
Zuhören ist nach dem 12-Uhrenschlag das tägliche Mittagsläuten mit Glocke 3 (e`).
Marienglocke von St. Kilian Bieringen
Die zweitgrößte von vier Glocken der katholischen Kirche St. Kilian in Bieringen, einem Ortsteil der Gemeinde Schöntal, die Marienglocke, wurde 1954 von A. Bachert in Heilbronn gegossen, hat einen Durchmesser von 98,2 cm, wiegt 550 kg und trägt die Inschrift: AVE MARIA. Als Symbol ziert sie Maria mit Kind.
Einen herzlichen Dank an den Dekan Herrn Wagner, an die Pfarramtsekretärin Frau Haak, an den Kirchengemeinderatsvorsitzenden Herrn Stockert und an die Mesnerin Frau Link für die Erlaubnis der Aufzeichnung, für die Organisation und für das Sondergeläut.
Jesuitenkirche Heidelberg/ Piusglocke
Zuhören ist die Größte der insgesamt 10 Glocken der Jesuitenkirche. Die auf den Namen Pius getaufte Glocke von Carl Rosenlächer wiegt 4.080kg. Sie wurde 1874 in Konstanz gegossen. Ihr Schlagton ist b°.
Einen großen Dank geht an die Pfarrgemeinde Heilig Geist, die ein Sololäuten der Glocke für die Aufnahme ermöglicht hat.

Glocken der Kilianskirche Wüstenrot
Seit 1976 sind in der Wüstenroter Kilianskirche vier Glocken zu hören. Erst in diesem Jahr wurde der Glockenstuhl ausgebaut und das Geläut auf vier Glocken erweitert. Beim gemeinsamen Läuten, wie auf dem Video zu hören ist, ergibt sich das Motiv Herr Gott, dich loben wir.
Bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg hatte die Kirche zwei Glocken - eine große aus dem Jahr 1428 und eine kleine Lösch-Glocke aus dem Jahr 1741, die zugleich auch die Kreuzglocke war. Die große Glocke wurde aber zu Kriegszwecken eingeschmolzen.
Als Ersatz bekam Wüstenrot 1927 zwei größere Glocken von der Firma Bachert, Kochendorf, hinzu.
Von den beiden neuen Glocken überlebte nur die kleinere den Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die große Glocke und die Kreuzglocke von 1741 wurden 1942 abgehängt.
1948 bekam Wüstenrot aber die kleine Kreuzglocke wieder zurück. 1960 stelle man Überlegungen an, das Geläut auf drei oder sogar auf vier Glocken zu erweiter, was dann 16 Jahre später auch geschah.
Glocke1 - die Totenglocke - wurde 1976 von Bachert, Bad Friedrichshall, gegossen mit der Inschrift: ICH BIN DIE AUFERSTEHUNG UND DAS LEBEN. Sie ziert das Christusmonogram und eine Krone.
Glocke2 - die Friedensglocke - wurde ebenfalls 1976 von Bachert, Bad Friedrichshall, gegossen mit der Inschrift: ER IST UNSER FRIEDE. Sie ziert eine Lutherrose und Fische.
Glocke3 - die Betglocke - wurde 1927 von Bachert, Kochendorf, gegossen mit der Inschrift: AUS FREUD UND SCHMERZ RUF HEIMATWÄRTS - AN GOTTES HERZ ICH TÖNERND ERZ!.
Glocke4 - die Kreuzglocke - wurde 1741 von Lösch gegossen mit der Inschrift: 1741 DEN 17. ABRILL GOS MICH IN GOTTES NAMEN IOHANN LEOHARD LÖSCH VON MORSBACH NACH WVSTENROTHD.

Schmidmühlen (AS) St. Ägidius, Plenum
Zwar keine tontiefen, dafür aber kostbare, seltene Glocken hängen im Turm der Pfarrkirche St. Ägidius Schmidmühlen, welcher jünger ist als 4 seiner Glocken.
1. Feuerglocke, (Ton a'), 1563 in Nürnberg gegossen (Inschrift: Gawerhiel Kirder in Nirnperg...), ca. 19 Zentner schwer, Durchmesser 1 Meter. Stundenschlag.
2. 12er oder Angelusglocke, St. Ägidius geweiht, (Ton c''), 1733 von Martin Neumeier in Stadtamhof gegossen, 400 kg, dm 75 cm. Viertelstundenschlag und Gebetsläuten.
3. 11er bzw. Mittagsglocke, Ton d'', 1772 von Johann Erhard Kößner in Stadtamhof, trägt Bilder der hll. Sebastian und Franz Xaver, dm 64 cm.
4. (jetzt 5., siehe Kommentar) Achtuhrglocke bzw. Hußglocke (!), Ton g'', 1475, Minuskelinschrift Ave Maria..., dm 55 cm. Sterbeglocke.
5. (jetzt 4.) Ton a'', 1,2 Zentner. Laut englischer Inschrift 1944 von G. Bergholtz in Stockholm gegossen, ersetzt sie eine Glocke von Joseph Philippi, Stadtamhof, 1834. Sie wurde 1945 von der amerikanischen Militärregierung in Burglengenfeld übergeben.
Die historischen Glocken überstanden den Turmeinsturz von 1807 und kehrten von der Ablieferung im 2. WK (bis auf die alte Sterbeglocke) zurück. Nur Glocke 1 durfte bleiben.
