St. Michael's Church (German: Hauptkirche Sankt Michaelis) is one of Hamburg's five Lutheran main churches (Hauptkirchen) and the most famous church in the city. St. Michaelis is a landmark of the city and it is considered to be one of the finest Hanseatic Protestant baroque churches. The church was purposely built Protestant unlike many other Hamburg churches which were originally built by Roman Catholics and were converted to Protestantism during the Reformation. It is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. A large bronze statue, standing above the portal of the church shows the archangel conquering the devil.
The 132-meter high Baroque spire totally covered with copper is a prominent feature of Hamburg’s skyline and has always been a landfall mark for ships sailing up the river Elbe.
The present church building is the third one at this site. The first one was built from 1647 to 1669. It became the church of the new town (Neustadt), which was created in 1625 inside the new city walls, and which grew steadily since. In 1687, the Michel became the fifth chapter church (Hauptkirche), as the new town (Neustadt) became a parish. That church was destroyed on March 10, 1750, by a lightning strike. The original church has been replicated and built in 9 different cities around the world.
In 1786, a new construction following the design of Johann Leonhard Prey (de) and Ernst Georg Sonnin (de) was completed. This is the church as we know it today. It was reconstructed twice in the 20th century: after catching fire in 1906 during construction work and after the bombings of 1944 and 1945. Since 1983, renovation is ongoing: first the spire and then the roof.
The composer and pianist Johannes Brahms was baptized on May 26, 1833 in this church and confirmed at the age of fifteen by Pastor von Ahlsen, who had married Brahms's parents.

The spot where St. Michael's Church can now be found has seen its share of troubled times. First a lightning strike and a catastrophic fire centuries later destroyed the first and second churches that were built on this site. But the city's Protestants 'remained faithful' and, in 1912, the construction of the church that we see today was finished, only to be damaged heavily during WWII.
Today, between the inner-city and the piers of Landungsbruecken, you can find a baroque gem that is regularly listed among Northern Germany's most beautiful churches and the Hamburg's most important landmarks. The distinctive copper roof and the 132 metres tall tower with Germany's largest clock bell are visible from afar. The observation deck at 106 metres offers a fantastic view over the city and its harbour.
Once you step inside the church, a massive nave opens up. It boasts five different organs and can fit 2,500 people. The centrepiece of the church interior is a 20 metres high altar. In the crypt below, 2,000 people have found their final resting place.
St. Michael's Church can be reached easily via underground line U3 to Baumwall or by buses 112 and 37. The church is literally is the centre of the city, so almost all the most important landmarks can be reached by foot from here.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the spectacular St Michael which is a Jesuit church in Munich, southern Germany, the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. The style of the building had an enormous influence on Southern German early Baroque architecture.
The church was built by William V, Duke of Bavaria between 1583 and 1597 as a spiritual center for the Counter Reformation. The foundation stone was laid in 1585.
Munich, Bavaria’s capital, is home to centuries-old buildings and numerous museums. The city is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration and its beer halls, including the famed Hofbräuhaus, founded in 1589. In the Altstadt (Old Town), central Marienplatz square contains landmarks such as Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (town hall), with a popular glockenspiel show that chimes and reenacts stories from the 16th century.

The Protestant main church St. Michaelis, called Michel, is the most famous church in Hamburg and a landmark of the Hanseatic city, because it is clearly visible to sailors on incoming ships. It is considered important baroque church in northern Germany and is the Archangel Michael consecrated, as the large bronze statue above the main entrance is. He is depicted as a winner in the battle over Satan. The Michel is on the southern Neustadt between Ludwig-Erhard-Strasse, Krayenkamp and English plank.
On March 10, 1750 at 11:00 clock the church with unusually loud thunder was struck by lightning. Smoke and flames were observed from 12:45 clock. The fire could not be extinguished, the church tower collapsed zigzag. The main part of the tower fell on the church roof and set the church on fire, which was thus completely destroyed.
St. Michael's is in brick style erected, baroque central building with a monumental west tower. As recovery of the construction of 1762/86 she is the youngest of the five main churches in Hamburg with 2,500 seats and also the largest. The church has a cruciform plan with 44 m wide, 52 m long and 27 m high. The marble pulpit is the center of the room.
The church interior is flooded with light, because the clear windows let the outside light to pass. The tower hall entrance hall to the church, to climb up the tower and the crypt tour with ticket booth for sale brochure. The crypt vault houses since 1986, an exhibition of architectural history with models of the Church. In early 2000, the crypt was rebuilt and is now used for church services and concerts.

At the highest point of the tower Webcameras are attached. The tower of St. Peter's Church is also 132 meters high, so that both can be considered as the second highest church towers in Hamburg; the highest is the memorial of St. Nicholas with 147.3 meters.
The clock in the church tower is the largest of its kind in Germany. It was developed by the Strasbourg company Ungerer produced, the owner of the grandfather of the famous graphic artist Tomi Ungerer was. Each of the four dials measuring eight feet in diameter, a large pointer has a length of 4.91 meters and a small of 3.60 m. Each of these pointers weighs 130 kilograms and is - as well as the surrounding digits - covered with gold leaf. For the clock tower there are two bells strike.
The Michel has five organs: a Marcussen organ in the concert gallery, a large Steinmeyer organ with its 85 registers, 5 manuals and 6674 pipes in the crypt of the romantic Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy organ and a remote station with General gaming table in the attic. On the 1st of Advent 2010 was also on the south gallery which Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach organ inaugurated.
On the esplanade of Michels provided with two gray protective coating hour bells of St Michael's Church from 1924 have been prepared that contained in the upper half of a circumferential aphorism. Suspension and clapper of the bell were damaged in World War II, and they are no longer useful. In 1974, two new Uhrschlag bells were installed in the bell tower. Furthermore, 178 brass plaques are in the bottom of the forecourt admitted (August 2014), which list the names of the donors in the Michel Foundation for renovation.

Rising high above the rooftops of Hamburg, Germany is the steeple of the Saint Michaelis Church.
This dark and majestic tower is over 430 feet tall, and is one of the guiding landmarks for ships coming into the port.
The gleaming, dusky color of the steeple comes from a copper coating that covers its whole length.
The church has been on this location since 1669, and the current church building dates back to 1786.
Since then, it has been reconstructed several times: once after a fire and once in the aftermath of World War Two.

Im selben Jahr trifft Hamburg eine Katastrophe: Der Michel brennt! Bei Lötarbeiten im Dachstuhl ist ein Feuer ausgebrochen und in kurzer Zeit brennt die gesamte Kirche. Kurze Zeit darauf bricht das Gebäude zusammen.Turm und Kirchenschiff brennen ab.
Der Michel wird wieder aufgebaut, allerdings mit modernem Baumaterial - Stahl und Beton. Am 19.10.1912 wird St. Michaelis von Kaiser Wilhelm II. eingeweiht.

The Gothic Revival Church of St. Nicholas (German: St.-Nikolai-Kirche) was formerly one of the five Lutheran Hauptkirchen (main churches) in the city of Hamburg. Bombing of Hamburg in World War II destroyed the bulk of the church and its rubble was removed leaving its crypt, its site and tall spired tower, largely hollow, save for a large set of bells, together serving as a memorial and an important architectural landmark. When Hamburg residents mention the Nikolaikirche, it is generally to this church that they are referring, and not the new Hauptkirche dedicated to Saint Nicholas, in the Harvestehude district.
The church was the tallest building in the world from 1874 to 1876 and is the second-tallest structure in Hamburg. Since 2005, an elevator has been installed to a 75.3 metre-high platform.
Hamburg, officially the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, is the second-largest city of Germany as well as one of the country's 16 constituent states, with a population of roughly 1.8 million people. The city lies at the core of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region which spreads across four German federal states and is home to more than 5 million people.

Hamburg is a major European science, research, and education hub, with several universities and institutions. Among its most notable cultural venues are the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle concert halls. It gave birth to movements like Hamburger Schule and paved the way for bands including The Beatles.
