A Walk Around Saint Sulpice, Paris
Saint-Sulpice is a Roman Catholic church in Paris, France, on the east side of Place Saint-Sulpice, in the Odéon Quarter of the 6th arrondissement. It is only slightly smaller than Notre-Dame and thus the second largest church in the city. It is dedicated to Sulpitius the Pious. Construction of the present building, the second church on the site, began in 1646. During the 18th century, an elaborate gnomon, the Gnomon of Saint-Sulpice, was constructed in the church.
The present church is the second building on the site, erected over a Romanesque church originally constructed during the 13th century. Additions were made over the centuries, up to 1631. The new building was founded in 1646 by parish priest Jean-Jacques Olier (1608–1657) who had established the Society of Saint-Sulpice, a clerical congregation, and a seminary attached to the church. Anne of Austria laid the first stone.
Construction began in 1646 to designs which had been created in 1636 by Christophe Gamard, but the Fronde interfered, and only the Lady Chapel had been built by 1660, when Daniel Gittard provided a new general design for most of the church. Gittard completed the sanctuary, ambulatory, apsidal chapels, transept, and north portal (1670–1678), after which construction was halted for lack of funds.
Gilles-Marie Oppenord and Giovanni Servandoni, adhering closely to Gittard's designs, supervised further construction (mainly the nave and side-chapels, 1719–1745).[4] The decoration was executed by the brothers Sébastien-Antoine Slodtz (1695–1742) and Paul-Ambroise Slodtz (1702–1758).
In 1723–1724 Oppenord created the north and south portals of the transept with an unusual interior design for the ends: concave walls with nearly engaged Corinthian columns instead of the pilasters found in other parts of the church. He also built a bell-tower on top of the transept crossing (c. 1725), which threatened to collapse the structure because of its weight and had to be removed. This miscalculation may account for the fact that Oppenord was then relieved of his duties as an architect and restricted to designing decoration.

Police officials said that the triangular structure above the central rose window is leaning eight inches (20 centimeters) forward toward the street since the fire (pictured right, the windows prior to the blaze). The Culture Ministry's fire expert, Jose Vaz de Matos, told reporters that part of the structure is to be taken down 'to limit the movement' of the stone (pictured left, a graphic showing the damage to the gothic cathedral). De Matos said the main risk to the cathedral is the gables above the rose windows, which provide crucial support to the stained glass masterpieces. He said the structure is particularly exposed to the wind, and the overall structure remains fragile. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said he will open the redesign of the of Notre Dame cathedral's historic spire to architects. He said: 'The international competition will allow us to ask the question of whether we should even recreate the spire as it was conceived by Viollet-le-Duc. Or whether, as is often the case during the evolution of heritage, we should endow Notre-Dame with a new spire that reflects the techniques and challenges of our era.' A day after the bells rang at Westminster Abbey in support of France, cathedral bells rang out across France on Wednesday evening in support of Notre-Dame, at the exact time a devastating blaze (pictured inset left) struck the 850-year-old gothic masterpiece on Monday.

An Impromptu Musical Moment in Lausanne Cathedral
Every year, I travel to Europe to research and update my guidebooks. For well over a hundred days this year, I’ve enjoyed a parade of sights, tastes, sounds, and experiences. My trip is nearly over, and, while I can hardly wait to get home, I’m feeling like, “Oh, I better soak up all the European fun I can in these last hours.”
Impromptu moments have been a theme of this trip, and today was no different. As I was reviewing my guidebook entry for the towering Lausanne Cathedral, the organist was practicing. This particular organ has a unique arrangement — one set of keyboards up in the gallery and another in the nave, where the audience can have a close-up view of the organist. Surrounded by incredible architecture and the church’s Reformation heritage, I was inspired to record this little clip. Join me now, accompanied by some amazing organ music, in one of Switzerland’s leading churches.
To learn more about the Reformation, watch my 55-minute television special about Luther and the Reformation. It’s streaming now for free at and available on DVD at

Easter Mass at St. Vincent de Paul...a church the Diocese is planning to shutter
This was one of the last songs from the gorgeous Easter Mass at St. Vincent de Paul, a French-language church in New York City, NY.
It has been the subject of attention in the past few years after appearing on a list of churches that face abandonment by the Diocese.
Here is a link to the not-for-profit that is working to fight this closure.
This church is the home for a diverse body of Catholics from France, Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Switzerland, Togo and elsewhere. It also has a stewards program that provides assistance (in the form of money, guidance, and counseling) to anyone, whether they are a member or not, Catholic or other.
Here is a link to the New York Times article from April 5th, 2012 that outlines the struggle that the church faces.
Please join me in working to make sure that it is allowed to build upon its 170-year legacy of charity and love.
Discover the life of St. Marguerite Bays
Marguerite Bays dedicated her life to the care of the family unit, to prayer, and to parish community, in simplicity. She never took religious vows. She was born on September 8th, 1815, in La Pierraz, a small village in the Swiss canton of Fribourg.
Marguerite chose what was considered an unusual life for that time in history: she decided to remain a single lay woman completely dedicated to prayer and service without entering any religious community.
For her entire life she remained a Third Order Franciscan. Father Carlo Calloni, a Franciscan Capuchin in Rome, is the promoter of Marguerite’s cause for sainthood.
