In the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Good Friday is marked by the Great Vespers of the Entombment, when a plaschenytsia, a body-sized cloth icon of the dead Christ in burial shroud, is processed three times around the exterior of the church. It is then brought inside to be venerated. Some Byzantine rite churches avoid Good Friday Stations of the Cross, regarding it as a Latin tradition imposed on the Byzantine rite, but churches in Lviv and elsewhere in Ukraine sometimes employ a variation of it. In the video shown here from Lviv’s Transfiguration Church, icons of various stations surround the icon of the shrouded body of Christ. The plaschenytsia remains on display for veneration through Holy Saturday.

In the Byzantine tradition, the week after Pascha is known as Bright Week, and each day as Bright Monday, Bright Tuesday, etc. Though not mandatory days for church attendance, these liturgies are among the most heavily attended days of the year. During the liturgies, the royal doors at iconostasis are left open, just as the tomb is now open for all to see in. Services during Bright Week begin with the verse: Khrystos voskres! Christ is Risen!” The faithful are invited at the conclusion to approach the front and venerate an icon of Jesus resurrected. Khrystos voskres! Christ is Risen! the faithful announce again at the conclusion.
It is a tradition, on Bright Monday, for people to sprinkle each other with water upon exiting the Church, as a reminder of their baptism. In public squares in Greek Catholic areas, groups of young people (and a few adults) go to sometimes raucously spray water at each other, on Bright Monday, marking it as “wet Monday.”

Excitement between Ukrainian Greek Catholic & Ukrainian Orthodox Churches
Post-tomos remarks (part 3) by Prof. Nicholas Denysenko, Emil & Elfrieda Jochum University Chair, Professor of Theology, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana, United States of America, 4 February 2019.
- Two reasons of excitement: People in the Orthodox Church of Ukraine found themselves in the same camp as the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church. Soviets used the Great Patriotic War to claim that they had liberated Western Ukraine from fascist NAZI tyranny, reunited a divided Ukraine, and lay blame Greek Catholics for collaborating with the NAZIs.
- 1:28 Crimea and Donbas: Moscow Patriarchate has officially blamed the Ukrainian Greek Catholics and former Autocephalists and Kyivan Patriarchate for creating a climate that led to the war in Ukraine
- 1:50 Phenomenon of the Maidan is not sufficiently developed. Scholarly literature: Maidan was a transformative experience
- 3:15 Greek Catholics and Kyivan Patriarchate took the most visible action. There were clergy of the Moscow Patriarchate on the Maidan
- 4:35 The Greek Catholics have not enjoyed a dialogue with the Moscow Patriarchate, a spirit of hostility between the churches; pseudo council of Lviv 1946 and Greek Catholics being forced to self-liquidate their own church
- 5:35 This dialogue should not be confused with resolving schism between Constantinople and Rome. Kyiv Church Study Group has ground breaking proposals that should be taken seriously. But the Orthodox Church is not ready to take this step yet mostly because they have to resolve their own internal differences
- 6:30 Ukrainian intellectuals in the Orthodox Church of Ukraine have expressed hope to create an Orthodox version of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv. This is an expression of respect for UCU in providing first rate, top shelf academic training for their students

Difference between Ukrainian Catholic and Roman Catholic
Excerpt of Fr Andriy Chirovsky on the radio program Wake Up, Tucson!, 1030 KVOI AM The Voice, Tuscon, Arizona, United States of America, 8 August 2013.
Partial transcript
– The Catholic Church is a family, a communion, of twenty-three (23) churches. The largest of which is the Roman Catholic or Latin church. The second biggest is the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Then there are twenty-one (21) other Eastern Catholic Churches.
– 0:42 What makes us Catholic? We recognized the leadership of the Pope of Rome. We are in full, visible communion. This means that I can celebrate at a Roman Rite parish, and a Roman Rite priest can celebrate at a Ukrainian or any Eastern Catholic Church.
– 1:00 We are one in the Eucharist. The basic structure of the Mass is the same because it is very ancient and back to the earliest Church. However, the Mass is expressed a bit differently.
– 1:18 The liturgy of Eastern Catholic Churches is sung from beginning. We do not use any instruments. The liturgy is sung in three and four part harmony.
– 1:42 We all face in the same direction, i.e. toward the alter, because we are on a journey together.
– 1:55 Vatican II flipped the priesthood around [facing the parishioners, lay people] in the Roman Churches. In Eastern Catholic Churches, everyone is facing in the same direction because they are on a journey together.
– 2:17 The Roman Rite has its own symbol system. They are facing parishioners to gather them around the Lord’s table of the Eucharist.
– 2:35 Our Eastern tradition is shared with the Orthodox. We use the same liturgy as the Greek Orthodox, Antiochian Orthodox…. It’s the same exact liturgy except we mention the Pope when we pray for the hierarchy.
– 3:06 Our new Pope is Pope Francis. He is shaking things up.
– 3:50 Pope Francis is sending a message: He is not criticizing the trappings of pontifical power [Papal supremacy]. He is saying that for this particular time in history, the Church needs to be much more poor and be in solidarity with the world’s poor. Pope Francis can’t see himself living a princely lifestyle when so many are in great poverty.
– 4:40 There are billions of people on this planet who would give anything to live like we do in the United States. Our hard economic times is abundance for others.
– 5:20 Love thy neighbour as thyself whether they are believers or not.
– 6:18 As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he took public transportation, lived in a little apartment where he cooked, cleaned and took care of an elderly priest. He lived by example.
– 6:55 Francis is the first Jesuit pope, chose the name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi because he was especially concerned for the well-being of the poor.
– 8:55 Pope Francis is working to eliminate careerism at the Church
