STORYLINE
Christians in Russia and Georgia are celebrating this Sunday as Catholics and Protestants mark Easter Sunday, while Orthodox Christians mark Palm Sunday.
In the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Orthodox Christians gathered at the Holy Trinity Cathedral for Palm Sunday Mass, held by Georgian Patriarch Ilia II.
Palm Sunday celebrates the believed entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, where he was greeted by crowds waving palm tree branches.
In Georgia, the faithful instead waved branches from the boxwood tree to symbolise the palm tree branches.
Georgia is one of the oldest Christian countries in the world, after adopting Christianity in 4th century.
Meanwhile, in the Russian capital, more than a thousand Catholic Christians gathered in the Moscow Immaculate Conception Cathedral for Easter Sunday Mass.
Priests sprinkled holy water on churchgoers and gave communion to believers attending the service.
Father Sergey Timahov, the vicar general of the Archdiocese of Mother of God at Moscow, led the sermon in the cathedral and congratulated the worshippers on resurrection of Christ.
Sister Irina, a nun from the cathedral, said she was excited that it was Easter Sunday.
I feel a thrill, happiness and revival of spirit. Because, although there is snow outside, there is spring in the soul, she said, clutching a basket of brightly decorated Easter eggs.
There are about 750-thousand Catholic believers in Russia.
The largest Christian denomination in the country is the Russian Orthodox Church, which will celebrate Easter a week later on April 15.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Catholic worshippers attended a Nativity service at Moscow's Catholic Cathedral on Monday night to celebrate Christmas Eve.
Some churchgoers stopped by a nativity scene, which illustrated the birth of Jesus Christ.
High Reverend Paolo Pezzi, Archbishop of the Catholic Church of Russia, presided over the service, telling the congregation that Christmas was a time of hope for everyone.
It is the hope that He supports our lives, Pezzi said.
Lyudmila Goncharova, who attended the service, echoed the Archbishop's sentiments.
Christmas is the most important day. It is the most important day for our family, she said.
The Catholic church, which uses the Gregorian calendar, celebrates Christmas Day on December 25, whilst the Russian Orthodox Church, which operates using the Julian calendar, celebrates the feast of the nativity of Jesus Christ on 7 January.

RUSSIA: RUSSIAN CATHOLICS PILGRIMAGE
Russian/Eng/Nat
A small group of Russian Catholics have left Moscow for the village of Prohiczya on the Polish-Ukrainian-Belorussian border where Pope John Paul the Second will conduct mass on Thursday.
The ceremony is expected to draw thousands of Catholics from all over Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
But the Russian Orthodox Church insists that until differences over property are settled, the Pope won't be welcome on Russian soil.
It claims land was unjustly seized in Western Ukraine in the early 1990s.
It's a tradition that spans the centuries.
These Russian Catholics are plotting their course for the Polish village of Prohiczya, near the Ukrainian-Belorussian-Polish border.
Pope John Paul the Second will be conducting mass there on Thursday, and they plan to be there.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
This is my second visit to see the Pope. I went to see him in 1991 and it made a great impression on me.
SUPER CAPTION: Lyudmila, Russian Catholic
The fall of communism led to the rapid rebirth of religion in Russia - and not only that of the Russian Orthodox Church.
But along with increased numbers of Catholics and Muslims came a vast array of foreign religious sects.
Feeling under threat, Russia's religious leaders drafted a law restricting religious freedom.
But the Catholic Church - which numbers some 10-thousand Russians - protested, and the religious restrictions were vetoed by President Yeltsin.
In spite of the opposition, Russia's Catholics are hoping the Pope may eventually make his long-planned visit to Russia.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We are hoping, we are praying, that the Pope will come to Russia.
SUPER CAPTION: Bishop Tadeus Kondrusiewicz
Although the Catholic Church and the Moscow Patriarchy maintain close contact, there are problems.
The Patriarchy insists it would consider inviting the Pope to Russia only after the Greek Catholic Church - located in Western Ukraine - returns property it claims was seized in the early 1990s.
President Yeltsin met the Pope last year in Rome, but the tense relations with the Orthodox Church and a future visit were not discussed.
And leader of the Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexei the Second, seems in no hurry to issue an invitation.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Until our inter-church relationship is resolved, a meeting with Pope John Paul II - we have to prepare for it - but as long as the seizure of Orthodox property in Western Ukraine continues, until that is stopped then our relationship will not improve.
SUPER CAPTION: Patriarch Alexei II
Until these differences can be resolved, Russian Catholics will continue their pilgrimages.
But they continue to hope that one day the Holy Father may come to visit them.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We are glad to go there and I think people are full of enthusiasm to see the Pope...believe and expect that he will come to this country.
SUPER CAPTION: Father Vladislav Klaus
Unless the political and religious climate undergoes a radical change, the border town of Prohiczya is likely to be the closest John Paul the Second ever comes to visiting Russia.

Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church In Donetsk
What You Need To Know:
✓ Greek Catholic church is still operating in Donetsk despite the conflict
✓ Many priests belonging to the Greek Catholic Church have left the region
✓ If there are people, there will be a church,” Father Mykhailo explains
In Donetsk city, a Greek Catholic church is still operating despite the conflict and despite the reported pressure felt by the non-Orthodox religious organisations from the pro-Russia separatist authorities.
“Undoubtedly, the number of wedding ceremonies, which are more joyful services, is smaller,” Father Mykhailo a priest who serves at the church said, but “christenings take place…because [people] feel they are in danger”.
According to Father Mykhailo, many of the priests belonging to the Greek Catholic Church in the Donetsk region have left – some out of fear, others because of the unpredictable nature of the situation.
Some of the church has been damaged from the fighting. Cracks can be seen in the walls. The refectory windows have been shattered and mine fragments have also damaged its outside.
“But all these things don’t matter. All of this is just in addition to the people. Because if there are people, there will be a church,” Father Mykhailo explained to Hromadske.

Russia - Catholic church celebrates Easter
T/I: 10:51:13
Easter is still a week away for most Russians Christians, who observe the Orthodox calendar, but the relatively small Roman Catholic community in Moscow crowded into its three churches for Easter services on Sunday (12/4). With the backing of the Russian Orthodox Church, the government recently passed a law giving official recognition to only the Orthodox, Jewish and Muslim religions in the country. The three established Catholic churches in Moscow, including the largest St. Louis which caters to a large ethnic Polish community, were packed Sunday morning for Easter services, while in the Orthodox churches believers were marking Palm Sunday.

Consecration of Tridentine altar in Moscow
On Sunday 20 June, Archbishop Paul Pezzi, the Ordinary of Archdiocese of the Mother Of God in Moscow, Russia, consecrated a refurbished wooden altar for the Extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. This altar is situated in the Big Chapel of the Moscow Cathedral of Immaculate Conception of The Blessed Virgin Mary. The consecration ceremony followed the 'usus antiquor.' After consecration of the altar, Fr. Augustine Dzenzel celebrated Mass in the Extraordinary Form. This is the first time since 1936, when the ruling Ordinary of this Archdiocese participated in the traditional Latin liturgy.
