CHURCH OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, PLOVDIV
The Church of the Holy Mother of God (Bulgarian: Църква Света Богородица) is a Bulgarian National Revival church in Bulgaria's second largest city Plovdiv. The church is situated in the Old town of Plovdiv on one of the city's seven hills, Nebet Tepe. A small church existed on that place since the 9th century. The church was renovated in 1186 by the bishop of Plovdiv Constantine Pantehi and it became part of a monastery. Both the church and the monastery were destroyed when the Ottoman Turks conquered the city in 1371 during the course of the Bulgarian-Ottoman Wars. The current edifice was constructed in 1844 as the main church of the city. It was a large three-nave pseudo-basilica was built by craftsmen from Bratsigovo and the first ktitors were wealthy merchants from the town of Koprivshtitsa. The iconostasis was made by carvers from Bulgarian School of Debar. Most of the church's icons were created by the painter Nikola of Odrin.

Богородичина црква у Доњој Каменици. Church of the Holy Mother of God, Donja Kamenica, Srbia.

The Church of the Holy Mother of God is the popular name of a medieval Eastern Orthodox church located in Asen's Fortress. It lies near Asenovgrad in the Rhodope Mountains of Plovdiv Province, south central Bulgaria.Constructed most likely in the 12th century, it features two stories, of which the upper story is the church proper and the lower story is of unclear function. The rectangular tower over the church's narthex is regarded as the earliest preserved of its kind in the Balkans.

Orthodox Church
Plovdiv, Bulgaria -- A worshipper in the Church of St. Nedelya in Plovdiv, easily the most aesthetic and spiritual city in Bulgaria. A priest was on the other side of the altar wall, occasionally singing in response. The worshipper told me afterward that he comes to St. Nedelya every day to sing and pray. He had a very gentle demeanor, but the priest was scary business when he finally came out from behind the wall -- black robe, long beard, cold eyes.
