The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
The Orthodox Church
The Orthodox Church today, numbering over 250 million worldwide, is a communion of self governing Churches, each administratively independent of the other, but united by a common faith and spirituality. Their underlying unity is based on identity of doctrines, sacramental life and worship, which distinguishes Orthodox Christianity. All recognize the spiritual preeminence of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople who is acknowledged as primus inter pares, first among equals. All share full communion with one another. The living tradition of the Church and the principles of concord and harmony are expressed through the common mind of the universal episcopate as the need arises. In all other matters, the internal life of each independent Church is administered by the bishops of that particular Church. Following the ancient principle of the one people of God in each place and the universal priesthood of all believers, the laity share equally in the responsibility for the preservation and propagation of the Christian faith and Church.
Establishment
Before the establishment of an Archdiocese in the Western Hemisphere there were numerous communities of Greek Orthodox Christians. The first Greek Orthodox community in the Americas was founded in New Orleans, LA by a small colony of Greek merchants. History also records that on June 26,1768 the first Greek colonists landed at St. Augustine, FL, the oldest city in America. The first permanent community was founded in New York City in 1892, today's Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and the See of the Archbishop of America. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America was incorporated in 1921 and officially recognized by the State of New York in 1922.
Mission
The mission of the Archdiocese is to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, to teach and spread the Orthodox Christian Faith, to energize, cultivate, and guide the life of the Church in the United States of America according to the Orthodox Christian Faith and Tradition.
The Greek Orthodox Church in America sanctifies the faithful through divine worship, especially the Holy Eucharist and other Sacraments, building the spiritual and ethical life of the faithful in accordance with the Holy Scriptures, Sacred Tradition, the doctrines and canons of the Ecumenical and local Councils, the canons of the Holy Apostles and the Fathers of the Church and of all other Councils recognized by the Orthodox Church.
The Archdiocese serves as a beacon, carrier, and witness of the message of Christ to all persons who live in the United States of America, through divine worship, preaching, teaching, and living of the Orthodox Christian Faith

MORE ABOUT THIS TOUR
This walking tour takes you around one of the world’s most vibrant and interesting cities. The City of New York is like a theme park with the theme being; the Big City. The tour will begin in downtown Brooklyn, an area sometimes also called the Civic Center, that is the central business district of Brooklyn, the most populous of New York City’s five boroughs, with its offices and residential buildings; an area alive with life and exuberance.
The tour begins at the Brooklyn Borough Hall, that was the city hall of the City of Brooklyn until 1898. Brooklyn and New York were separate cities until 1898, when they were consolidated into greater New York City, the current five boroughs. Here in the Brooklyn Heights we will pass many interesting landmarks and churches along the way. The tour is essentially a visit to some of Brooklyn’s grandest architectural churches and cathedrals. It will examine closely these churches and how they blend in with the vicinity.
The tour will encompass the US Post Office building before moving on to our first church, the Spencer Memorial Church, which is our first church site, before descending on the tree covered avenue that is home to the tall tower of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Cathedral.
We then descend upon the St Ann and Holy Trinity Church at the corner of Montague and Clinton streets in the heart of the Brooklyn Heights neighbourhood. The tour will then see us look at how the history is so poignant in the tour with a visit to the Brooklyn Historical Society so you can see where some of the documents are held pertaining to Brooklyn’s rich architecture and glory.
Your next stop is the Church of the Savior on Pierrepont Street before you will be present to one of the most romantic spots in New York City that will take your breath away. One-third of a mile long, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade offers a vista of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline and the majestic Brooklyn Bridge.
Here we will witness the St. George Hotel and the Leverich Towers. A tall 18-storey hotel built during the time of the Great Depression and still standing tall in many more ways today. Next stop is more historical architecture in Plymouth Church where the walk encounters the old Margaret Apartments, a 12-storey high building on Columbia Heights. Here, Jehovah Witnesses were lovingly restoring these apartments when they were tragically burned down in 1980.
We then pass the Brooklyn War Memorial and span the Brooklyn Bridge where the walking tour concludes. lets hope you enjoy this walking tour around Brooklyn, where you will see no fewer than seven churches of architectural splendour, and cross one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.

More info via Wikipedia:
Homelessness in the United States of America is an area of concern for social service providers, government officials, policy professionals, and society at large. Although the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in January 2012 annual point-in-time count found that 633,782 people across the United States were homeless, other counts vary widely. In a recent approximation, an estimated 1.6 million unduplicated persons used transitional housing or emergency shelters. Of these people, approximately 1/3 are members of households with children, a nine percent increase since 2007. Another approximation is from a study done by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, which states that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2007). With 2007 as a benchmark, the data from the report showed a 6.8 percent decline in homelessness among individuals, a 3.7 percent decline of homeless families, a 13.1 percent decline of the unsheltered homeless population, and a 19.3 percent decline in persons experiencing chronic homelessness. Determining even an approximate count of homeless people is quite difficult, even more so when it comes to those that are under the age of 21. Adolescents, teens, and runaways seem to fall through the crack; so many go unaccounted for. Many of the youth living on the streets do not want to be counted for various reasons. Therefore, agencies that do count, use different methods and techniques that make an accurate count that much more difficult.
One out of 50 children or 1.5 million children in America will be homeless each year. In 2013 that number jumped to one out of 30 children, or 2.5 million. There were an estimated 57,849 homeless veterans estimated in the United States during January 2013; or 12 percent of all homeless adults. Just under 8 percent of homeless U.S. veterans are female. Texas, California and Florida have the highest numbers of unaccompanied homeless youth under the age of 18; comprising 58% of the total homeless under 18 youth population.
Because of turnover in the homeless population, the total number of people who experience homelessness for at least a few nights during the course of a year is thought to be considerably higher than point-in-time counts. A 2000 study estimated the number of such people to be between 2.3 million and 3.5 million. According to Amnesty International USA, vacant houses outnumber homeless people by five times.

ROUNDUP VIDEO: The Pan-Orthodox Vision of Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary (SVOTS)
YONKERS HISTORY: His Grace Zachariah Mar Nicholovos, Metropolitan of the Northeast American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (MOSC) and board member at St. Vladimir’s Seminary, on the unique diversity and collaborations at SVOTS, and how that could impact the broader Orthodox world.
YONKERS, NY: At SVOTS both faculty and students – male and female, single and married – live on campus to worship and study together, providing the best environment for the study of theology and the formation of future priests, theologians and other co-workers of God.
YONKERS VIDEO VAULT St. Vladimir’s embraces the challenge of serving the Church and the needs of Orthodox Christians in the 21st Century. Time brings change but the Truth of the Gospel is eternally unchanging; adjustments must be made to engage a rapidly changing world, but without sacrificing that which is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
PUBLIC ACCESS VIDEO: Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary is an Orthodox Christian seminary in Crestwood, Yonkers, New York, in the United States.
In the fall of 1794, eight Russian monks arrived in Alaska and sowed the seeds of Orthodox Christianity on what would eventually become U.S. soil.
Sensing the need for a center of theological and pastoral training, they quickly moved to establish a school on Kodiak Island.
A few decades later a seminary was founded in Sitka by the His Grace, Archimandrite Innocent (Veniaminov), then bishop in Alaska, later Metropolitan of Moscow, who in 1978 was officially listed among the saints of the Orthodox Church as the Apostle to America.
These pioneering attempts, however, were short lived.
In 1962, a five-year search for a suitable campus ended with the acquisition of the beautiful property in Westchester County. St. Vladimir’s sprang up rapidly on the soil that before had belonged to “St. Eleanora’s Convalescent Home for Poor Mothers, a private institution run by the Sisters of Charity of New York City. St. Eleanora’s had been built by Adrian Iselin as a memorial to his deceased wife, Eleanora, to provide care for mothers unable to afford post-maternity services.
The stately but worn statues of both St. Adrian and St. Eleanora, patrons of Adrian and Eleanora Iselin, still grace the seminary grounds. Within a few years, after a successful financial drive, new buildings were erected on the property, and housing for faculty and staff was acquired.
In June 1966 the seminary was accepted as an Associate Membership in the American Association of Theological Schools (ATS), becoming fully accredited in 1973. Recognition of the seminary's maturity was given in March 1967, when the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York granted the seminary the power to award the degree of Bachelor of Divinity (later termed “Master of Divinity”), followed in 1970 by the degree of Master of Theology, in 1985 by the degree of Master of Arts, and in 1988 by the degree of Doctor of Ministry.
In May 1977 a new dormitory and staff residence (aka the “North Dorm”), necessitated by the seminary's continued growth, was dedicated by His Beatitude Elias IV, Patriarch of Antioch; and in 1983, a new chapel, together with a new administrative facility containing the bookstore, classrooms, and office space, was dedicated by His Beatitude Metropolitan Theodosius, then-Primate of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA).

Inside Colombia's Temple of Lucifer
Víctor Damián Rozo claims to be the very son of the devil and has built a temple in Colombia dedicated to worshiping Satan. More than ten years ago, Rozo renounced his Catholic religion to give his life to Lucifer, who he considers to be the only true god. Since then, his mission has been to recruit Luciferian parishioners, congregate them in his temple, and link their souls with the devil.
On this episode of 'VICE INTL,' we traveled to Rozo's temple to be initiated in a bombastic ceremony of satanist purification.
