Arcachon est une commune du Sud-Ouest de la France, sous-préfecture du département de la Gironde, en région Aquitaine.
Partie intégrante de l'ancienne province de Gascogne, elle s'inscrit dans le périmètre du Pays de Buch, des Landes de Gascogne et de la forêt des Landes.
Importante ville du bassin d'Arcachon, d'une population municipale 2012 de 11.307 habitants, au sein d'une aire urbaine de 60.143 habitants en 2006, elle est une des principales stations balnéaires historiques de la côte atlantique française, aux côtés de Royan, Biarritz.
Arcachon s’oriente vers une ville de bien-être et de santé.

The Dune of Pilat (French: Dune du Pilat, official name), also called Grande Dune du Pilat) is the tallest sand dune in Europe. It is located in La Teste-de-Buch in the Arcachon Bay area, France, 60 km from Bordeaux.
With more than one million visitors per year, the Dune of Pilat is a famous tourist destination.

Arcachon is a seaside town in southwest France that's known for oyster harvesting. Its 4 districts are named after the seasons. The Ville d'Été (summer) quarter is home to shopping streets, the town’s sandy main beach and a casino in the 19th-century Château Deganne. Ville d’Hiver (winter quarter) has extravagant 19th-century villas. South of the town is the Dune du Pilat, a huge natural sand dune.
Arcachon is a commune in the Gironde department in southwestern France. It is a popular bathing location on the Atlantic coast 55 kilometres (34 mi) southwest of Bordeaux in the Landes forest. It has a fine beach and a mild climate said to be favourable for invalids suffering from pulmonary complaints. Arcachon is known for the Arcachonnaise, the local name for an Arcachon villa, which is the architectural style of many of the older houses built there. It is a type of Victorian architecture, and was criticized for generations, but is now considered to be charming.
The town of Arcachon is 150 years old. Not long before 2 May 1857, when Emperor Napoleon III signed its official birth certificate, it was just a forest of pine trees, oaks and strawberry trees (arbutus), with no road links, and home - mostly when the weather was expected to be warm, and more in wood huts than in real houses - to fewer than 400 people, mostly fishermen and peasants. In earlier years, when some hygienists began to recommend sea bathing, three sea establishments were laid out by some entrepreneurs especially for the Bordeaux bourgeoisie and other wealthy people. This was the beginning of a new lifestyle, and some of the locals got the opportunity to claim their independence from La Teste-de-Buch, which owned their properties, in order to found a free new town, Arcachon. At its southern entrance from the Atlantic ocean, Arcachon Bay is crowned by Europe's largest sand dune, the Dune du Pilat, nearly 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) long, 500 metres (1,600 feet) wide, reaching 110 metres (360 feet) in height, and moving inland at rate of 5 metres (16 feet) a year.

Le panoramearth est pris de la « Dune du Pilat » (ou Pyla), nous sommes sur sa bordure nord, à flanc de dune. A la seconde 24 de la vidéo, on a le sommet de la dune qui nous surplombe, impressionnant ! A la seconde 49, on voit l'Océan atlantique avec, en bordure de côte, le « Banc d'Arguin », qui est une réserve naturelle pour les oiseaux (site de reproduction, d'hivernage et halte migratoire), mais on y trouve aussi à proximité des parcs à huitres. A marée basse ce banc fait environ 4 km de long sur 2 km de large, mais sa surface évolue sans cesse. En été, le banc est partiellement accessible par bateau. La « Dune du Pilat » est la dune la plus haute d'Europe. Située à l'entrée sud du bassin d'Arcachon, elle s'étend sur 500 m d'est en ouest et sur 2,7 km du nord au sud et contient environ 60 millions de mètres cubes de sable. Elle dépend du territoire de la commune française de La Teste de Buch, à proximité d'Arcachon, au cœur des Landes de Gascogne. Son altitude varie constamment, tout en oscillant aux environs de 100 à 117 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer. La pente est plus forte côté forêt que côté océan. La dune avance inexorablement vers l'intérieur du pays et recouvre peu à peu les constructions (maisons, routes) côté forêt.

A long-time oyster-harvesting area on the south side of the tranquil, triangular Bassin d'Arcachon (Arcachon Bay), this seaside town lured bourgeois Bordelaise at the end of the 19th century. Its four little quarters are romantically named for each of the seasons, with villas that evoke the town's golden past amid a scattering of 1950s architecture. Arcachon's generous swathe of golden-sand beach seethes with sun-seekers in summer, but there are plenty of equally sandy but less-crowded beaches, including the lovely Plage des Arbousiers, just a short bike ride away.
Archachon is very easy to reach from Bordeaux. For budget travelers, there are plenty of daily trains leaving from Gare Saint-Jean in Bordeaux. Another cheaper alternative would be the buses leaving from bus stop in front of Gare Saint-Jean. It takes about 1 hour and half to reach Arcachon town.
Lovely surroundings of Arcachon becomes horrendous in July if you try to get anywhere — it takes nearly 3 hours to get from Arcachon to Andernos Le Bains in the early evenings. In fact, if you want to go anywhere in the area in summer, you'd better start early in the morning around 9AM. This is not a place for those preferring laziness in the mornings while on vacations.
