The W Class Tram Melbourne - One Hour of this Melbourne Icon - City Circle
English - The W Class Tram here in Melbourne is an icon both here in Melbourne and around the world. The Burgundy Liveried City Circle Trams have all now been stored and will be converted to W8 status.
The W8 upgrade strengthens the body, renews the passenger saloon and gives the driver a whole new driver control and air conditioning for the first time.
Here is a look back at the W class trams that I have filmed over the last few years both on route 30 and The City Circle Route 35. Featured are the route 30 green and gold service trams, The Burgundy City Circle Liveried Trams and the converted W8 trams.
A couple of things to note -
* for a period of time, the City Circle ran out of North Fitzroy Trams Depot on route 96
* reconstruction work at Port Junction and Batman Park forced some W class trams to run into Southbank via St Kilda Road
* Footscray Road route 30 and 75 terminus has been used to stable trams when Southbank Tram Depot has not been accessible.

The City Circle Tram service provides a free and convenient way to get around central Melbourne. Tourists, shoppers, office workers and families can use the City Circle Tram to travel to major attractions, shops and city events.
The tram operates every 12 minutes, and takes approximately 48 minutes to complete a loop of the city.
The W Class trams used were built between 1923 and 1956. The W class was the mainstay of Melbourne's tramways system for 60 years. A total of 752 trams of all variants were built.

Tram Driver’s Eye View - Ride Melbourne’s City Circle with a Heritage W Class Tram (Australia)
Melbourne’s tram system is one of the largest, if not the largest tram system in the world consisting of 250 kilometres (160 miles) of double track route. In 1884 a horse tram line opened in Fairfield , heralding the beginning of today’s network. Melbourne's cable tram system opened in 1885, and expanded to one of the largest in the world, with 75 kilometres (46.6 miles) of double track. The first electric tram line opened in 1889, but closed only a few years later in 1896. In 1906 electric tram systems were opened in St Kilda and Essendon, marking the start of continuous electric tram operation in the city. The system has undergone a number of managerial changes in recent years, today it is operated by Keolis Downer, trading as Yarra Trams.
This video shows the city circle route from a Heritage W Class tram. Melbourne is an attractive city and riding the tram is a great way to see it.

Art trams on the City Circle - Melbourne's Trams
Since 2013 as part of the Melbourne Festival a number of trams have been completely wrapped with special designs created by various artists. On Sunday 29th November 2015 the art tram community day took place where all eight of the 2015-16 art trams ran on the City Circle (route 35) all day around the CBD and Docklands. In this rather long video we see all of the art trams at a number of locations along Flinders Street and Docklands. In between we also see a couple of the W Class trams that normally operate on this route.

Melbourne City Circle Tram
The City Circle tram is a zero-fare tram running around the Melbourne City Centre in Australia. Aimed mainly at tourists, the route passes many Melbourne attractions while running along the city centre's outermost thoroughfares, as well as the developing Docklands waterfront precinct. It operates in both clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. An average of three million passengers uses the service every year.
The City Circle route is operated by heritage W class trams liveried in burgundy with gold trim, however rolling stock shortages often see Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board liveried traditional green liveried W Class trams on the service.
Trams display the route number 35. The City Circle operates at a headway of 12 minutes in both directions, with the service taking approximately 60 minutes to complete a loop. Ten trams are allocated to the service at any one time (five in each direction).

City Circle Tram in Melbourne, Australia
The City Circle (also known as City Circle tourist tram) is a zero-fare tram running around the Melbourne City Centre in Australia. Aimed mainly at tourists, the route passes many Melbourne attractions while running along the city centre's outermost thoroughfares, as well as the developing Docklands waterfront precinct. It operates in both clockwise and anti-clockwise direction.
The tram route was introduced on 29 April 1994, requiring a small track extension along Spring Street, between Collins and Flinders Streets, to enable a complete CBD loop to be formed. The Federal Government's Building Better Cities program funded the $6.4 million capital cost of the track expansion, while the State Government funded the running costs.
Until January 2003 the western leg of the original route of the tram was down Spencer Street, but the route was then extended west to run through Docklands. The travel time around the circle before this change was 40 minutes.
During early 2006, new Passenger Information Displays were installed along with Digital Voice Announcements.
In April 2008, the service adopted the daylight saving timetable on a permanent basis, operating from 10:00 to 21:00 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The end of service at other times is 18:00.
On 30 May 2009, the route was altered for a second time, being extended from Harbour Esplanade to the NewQuay and Waterfront City precincts via Docklands Drive. This made the route an elongated 'q'.
The route of the City Circle trams roughly follows the outer edges of the Hoddle Grid, with three diversions. It takes in all of La Trobe Street, Harbour Esplanade and Flinders Street. It follows Spring Street between Flinders and Bourke Streets, but travels along Nicholson Street and Victoria Street before turning into La Trobe Street. At the junction of Harbour Esplanade and Latrobe Street trams turn off the loop to run to and from a terminus towards the end of Docklands Drive, Waterfront City Docklands.

English - The North Fitzroy Tram Depot closed in 1992 but briefly opened again between 2008 and 2012 so the City Circle W Class Tram fleet could be based and run out of the depot. The bus side of the depot is still operational in 2015.
