. Do not miss the display of micro-miniatures in the upper lavra. It sounds lame, but it is fascinating. You can enter the caves in the lower part if you dress correctly (women MUST cover their hair and wear skirts, no shorts. Expensive scarves are for sale there). Women can only just get away with pants in the winter. Start at the Lower Lavra, visiting the caves before the crowds descend for the day. There are two cave complexes, each housing the mummified remains of monks, as well as religous icons and other relics. Both caves are accessed through churches, with the entrance to the shorter caves at the end of a boardwalk. While it is free to enter the caves, you must purchase a taper candle in order to light your way. The caves are not recommended for the claustrophobic or overly tall. Once you're in there, it's hard, even impossible to turn around and go back out - you have to keep going.

UNESCO Lavras: Monastery of The Caves, Kiev
Kiev Pechersk Lavras (a monastery and only the most important monasteries were Lavras) was founded in 1077 by St. Antony. The underground caves were dug out by priests who lived there as hermits. Pilgrims now visit the underground caves to venerate the mummified monks.
The Orthodox, and deeply religious Ukranians, stood in a long line with the Viking groups, waiting their chance to buy candles used to light the way through the dark labyrinth. Unless you are on a religious pilgrimage, I advise foregoing this experience.
The underground tunnels are narrow, dark, and claustrophobic; pilgrims slowly shuffle along, pausing at each coffin in niches on both sides of the corridor to genuflect, say a prayer and kiss the mummified monk's coffin before moving along. All traffic behind them comes to a half before they move a few feet to the next coffin while tunnels lead in all directions. (Try to stay in the main tunnel or they may find your mummified remains...eventually.)
Photographs are not allowed, priests stand in spots along the corridor moving people along (one made Steve put out his headlight...candles only are allowed inside which do absolutely no good...), and it is difficult to pass a pilgrim in the dark.
Not the most wonderful experience! Now that you know, decide for yourself since this tour is included by Viking.

Exploring the Nikolskaya storm drains in Kyiv
On a cold January afternoon, I entered the Nikolskaya storm drains in Kiyv with a group of intrepid explorers. The 19th century warren of winding passages and damp chambers is a dark, confined and claustrophobic space. I went in encumbered as always - big mistake, as I was winded for most of the way. Go in as light as you can to enjoy and make the most of it !

Krubera cave. Expedition 2017.
The expedition of the Ukrainian Speleological Association to the caves of the Orto Balagan Valley (Gagra Range, Abkhazia) has proceeded to completion recently. Traditionally, the main objects of our expedition interest were Krubera and Berchilskaya caves.
The international team led by Gennady Samokhin worked in the Chamber of Soviet Speleologists (-1710 meters). During the further underground exploration the team began engineering work to overcome the obstruction on the top floor of this camber.
Within the previous expeditions the excavations were conducted at the lower parts of the Chamber of Soviet Speleologists but that direction was considered prospectless so this year it has been decided to conduct a small “reconnaissance battle” on the top floors. After several shifts with the use of engineering equipment, the tunneling works were stopped and this direction is also considered unpromising for this moment.
The second task of the group was to plunge through the siphon in the tributary at the depth
-1650 m. The first attempts to lower the level of the siphon and dive into it were made in the expedition of the Ukrainian Speleological Association in 2008. This year the main diver of our team Gena Samokhin had to make the further attempt to dive through the sump. It was quite spacious and with good visibility. The diver unwound 60 meters of the cord and the depth of immersion did not exceed 5 meters. The siphon continued further, but the submariner decided to return, using an acceptable part of the air. In future expeditions submerging into the siphon at -1650 meters will be continued.

You Must Know Everything by Isaac Babel (read by George Saunders @
George Saunders reads Isaac Babel's short story You Must Know Everything and discusses it with The New Yorker's fiction editor, Deborah Treisman.
In the fourth New Yorker fiction podcast, George Saunders reads Isaac Babel. I know Saunders very well, although I knew next to nothing about Isaac Babel.
Saunders sets up this story very briefly before diving in to the read. There’s something fantastic about the way Saunders read the story–full of emotion and affect. He absolutely made the story come to life and his commentary at the end made the story even better.
Babel was 21 when he wrote this story (he was amazingly prolific–his Complete Works is over 1,000 pages), and Saunders is blown away by the amount of depth such a young writer fits into the story. Saunders says that for him Babel is a combination of Hemingway and Kerouac–Hemingway because Babel edited his storied very intensely and Kerouac because he wasn’t afraid to add the occasional poetic touch.
In the story, a young boy is going to visit his grandmother. As the story opens, he explains that he was always very observant. He knew everything about the streets of his city, Odessa. He knew the stores and the anomalies in the buildings. He observed every new window. Until someone teased him for looking in a lingerie store.
When he gets to his grandmother’s he is prepared to be there for a while since he has a lot of studying to do. The rest of his family is out, but he has Hebrew, Russian and Music lessons to do that night. he doesn’t mind most of the lessons but the music… oy!
He enjoys the company of his grandmother. She was wise and knowledgeable and fed him well. It was always warm there between cozy and claustrophobic. She also had a dog. And then we get this fascinating piece about the grandmother (via the dog).
she loved us all, particularly Grandmother who was so hard and merciless.
That one strange line reveals so much about the grandmother. Later she wakes out of a soporific state and demands:
“Study and you will have everything- wealth and fame! You must know everything. The whole world will fall at your feet and grovel before you. Everybody must envy you. Do not trust people. Do not have friends. Do not lend them money. Do not give them your heart!”
It’s a socking moment full of intensity and disdain and yet it doesn’t seem wholly out of character. But what is even more shocking is when she rails on the girl who is working for her in the kitchen. The girl drops a plate and the grandmother goes in and yells:
Get out, you little slut! … You are breaking my things. Get out!
It’s quite an amazing story.
The interviewer says that Saunders would be writing more about the mean Grandmother and the nice dog and he laughs and agrees. Then he says how inspiring Babel is. That he gets so much out of so little. And more importantly how a typical writer may have used one outburst as a climax, but instead, we get the second more shocking climax the happens “off screen.”
They also talk about the advice from the Grandmother. Saunders says the advice is not Babel’s, as he had friends and was very generous. Although at the same time he seemed to be taking the “know everything” advice to heart. The main character seems to be absorbing everything he can already. And babel himself, Saunders says, would pay a woman for the privilege of looking in her purse.
