The Burnt Part Boys part 1
Review: The Burnt Part Boys at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie
By JAMES F. COTTER
Published: 2:00 AM - 07/21/09
POUGHKEEPSIE — The Burnt Part Boys tells a story as unusual as its title. In West Virginia in 1962, some teenagers set out to stop a coal mine, the South Mountain Mine, nicknamed the Burnt Part, from reopening after their fathers had been killed there 10 years earlier. They journey to the site to see it for themselves and to face the tragedy that has changed each of their lives. They have different motives for going, but one of them is intent on violence.
More unusual still, the book by Mariana Elder has been set to music by Chris Miller with lyrics by Nathan Tysen. The new musical opened last weekend at Vassar's Martel Theater as part of the Powerhouse summer season under the aegis of the New York Stage and Film Company.
Directed by Erica Schmidt, the cast sings the bluegrass and pop score with fervor and conviction in an operetta combination of quintets to solos. Musical director Vadim Feichtner leads the three-piece band, and Peter Pucci directs the lively choreography. The set design by Derek McLane is efficient and massive with wooden beams and scaffolding on several levels. Kaye Voyce's costumes are detailed and authentic with country colors and mining headgear. Everything works together to create the grandeur and claustrophobia of mountains, rivers and pits.
Al Calderon plays 14-year-old Pete with a firm voice as he sings Man I Never Knew of his father; he steals dynamite and sets off on his quest. He is joined by Dusty, portrayed by Noah Galvin as a mild-mannered boy who plays the saw, wears glasses and remains loyal to his friend Pete. They are met by Frances, played by Molly Ranson, who is rough and ready as she chants Good Morning Gun while waving her rifle.
Pete's 18-year-old brother, Jake, is played by Skylar Astin as a good-hearted young man touched by conflicting emotions as he sings Disappear and If I Had My Way. Andrew Durand is his friend Chet who joins him in song and spirit as they pursue the trio and try to protect the younger teens from harming themselves.
David Abeles, Joe Cassidy, John Schiappa and Timothy Warmen make up a chorus of miners who as ghosts intone God's Eyes and Sunrise at the opening scene and again in the finale. They also celebrate The Outlaw Song and Appalachian traditions with Family Tree. When the nine actors raise their voices in unison, the thrill of working-class people, young and old, shakes the depths of the burnt parts of the earth and the human heart. This is a musical that is on its way to doing for Appalachian miners what Les Miserables did for French revolutionaries.

Can You Beat Fallout: New Vegas With Only Euclid’s C-Finder?
Fallout: New Vegas has at least 3 unique weapons. Some are variations of pre-existing weapons, while others are their own thing entirely. One of those weapons is a delivery system for a heat ray. Can You Beat Fallout New Vegas With Only Euclid’s C-Finder?

Can You Beat Fallout New Vegas With Only Euclid’s C-Finder? (in text form)
I started things off by naming myself Karen, because I said in the sometimes officially Christian Ratatouille Fan Club Discord Server that I would, made myself look like a Karen, and started assigning SPECIAL points. The C-Finder is unique. It *is* an Energy Weapon, but the damage it causes is not affected by any skills, I’ll explain more about that later, but because of how the C-Finder works and my unwillingness to rely on Speech, I evenly spread out my remaining points, picked Barter, Medicine, and Lockpick as my Skills, and Claustrophobia and Skilled as my Traits. Skilled gives a +5 to all skills and you’ll understand why I chose Claustrophobia in a bit.
There’s only one place in New Vegas to get Euclid’s C-Finder: Freeside. But you can’t just roll up to Freeside like a pimped out giraffe covered in glitter, you have to work for your tool. I did the usual song and dance with Chet and hit the road. My destination was Helios One because there are things there that need to be done in order for me to get my target designator. On my way there, I dropped a worthless snow globe on the ground a few times to see if it would break, passed by a memorial for those who ended but don’t deserve to be remembered, loosely attempted to lure a few dogs into land mines to watch their limbs get dismantled by the shrapnel, and passed through the Blind Deathclaw canyon. This is where the one Blind Deathclaw in the game was told to go by the other deathclaws to keep it from being weird around the children. The Blind one startled me good when it followed me into a shack. I’m not entirely sure how it got through the door, I just assumed it was some blind magic. I’m also not worried about offending any blind people, it’s not like they’ll be watching this.
Two more Deathclaws from over yonder ravaged my leather wrapped body while the worst humanity had to offer created holes in my body for the deathclaws to play with. They followed me, the murderers not the deathclaws, farther than I thought they would. I tried to lure them to a nearby Legion outpost but it didn’t work for 2 reasons. 1) It was an NCR outpost and 2) they were not interested in coming anywhere near the trailer park. Bunch of good for nothing good for nothings. The NCR Rangers were also uninterested in going and attacking the marauders, which was a shame. I was counting on one of the Rangers dying so I could convince Haggerty that I was an NCR soldier. Equally disappointing was the lack of any sort of NCR uniform into the outpost itself.

Creepy Caverns for the Atari 8-bit family
Came also out for:
---
Game description:
Warning: This is not a game for the claustrophobic! An evil creature, the Megawump, has rounded up a horde of bloodthirsty monsters who roam the countryside at night, raiding small villages and hoarding their ill-gotten treasures in the musty caverns they inhabit.
Your task is to enter these caverns, retrieve as much treasure as you can, and collect the magic objects needed to kill the Megawump. You'll find two monsters in every room. They come in three varieties: pythons, trolls and hydras. Each is more vicious than the last, and each is worth 1000 points dead.
To succeed in your quest, you must avoid these monsters, and pick up bags of gold (worth 50 points) and jewels (80 points) from their caverns. The caverns also contain quivers of arrows. Each red quiver contains five smart arrows. These arrows, which are also red, guide themselves to the nearest monster when fired. Orange quivers hold five dumb arrows, which fly straight, and thus must be aimed more carefully.
Other magic items that are hidden in the caverns include a gold amulet, which protects you from the Megawump's lightning bolts, and a gold key that opens a magic chest. By opening the chest, you gain the magic sword with which you can kill the Megawump.
Creepy Caverns screen As you find and use these objects, a tally is kept at the bottom of the screen. The left number shows the number of smart arrows you have; the right number shows the number of dumb arrows. You'll also see representations of the key and the sword, once you've found them. To use an item, press the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard to move the arrow indicator on the screen to the item you wish to use. You need not point the amulet to use it. Press the joystick's fire button to shoot an arrow or to use the key or sword. To aim either an arrow or the sword, push the joystick in the direction you wish to shoot or slash before pressing the trigger.
To kill the Megawump, you must have possession of three dumb arrows, the amulet and the magic sword. When you enter his room, first shoot him with the three arrows. Then, after he has changed color (which indicates vulnerability), use your sword. Show the Megawump no mercy!
What I think:
Quite fun, yet repetitive one-more-time game.
Whether you want to beat the game OR if you want the highest score possible doesn't matter, this game is quite fun either way.

Wallace Shawn on Artistic Solidarity: As Glenn Greenwald Can't Return to U.S., I Took My Play To Him
- The renowned playwright and actor Wallace Wally Shawn has just returned from Brazil where he gave a special performance of his play, The Designated Mourner, to journalist Glenn Greenwald, who first broke the story about National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden. The play was staged at the Public Theater in New York City last year, but Greenwald could not attend because of fears that he would be prosecuted upon returning to the United States. Just this week, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper suggested journalists could be considered accomplices of Snowden. Through three characters, Shawn's play reveals the claustrophobia of a shrinking political landscape in a formerly liberal land. Shawn has written numerous plays in addition to The Designated Mourner, including The Fever, Aunt Dan and Lemon, and Grasses of a Thousand Colors. Shawn has also had celebrated acting roles in several films, including The Princess Bride, Toy Story, and the 1981 cult classic, My Dinner with Andre, which he also co-wrote.
