The Mystery of the Ancient Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde, Colorado, USA | Ancient Architects
Not many people will have heard of this amazing site in Colorado USA, a site that is the largest cliff dwelling in North America and known as Cliff Palace.
Cliff Palace was built by a people known as the Ancestral Pueblans, also known as the Anasazi, which means the ancient ones. They were native to the Four Corners region of the United States, where the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona neatly intersect.
It is estimated that around 100 to 125 people lived here between 1200 and 1300 AD and they accessed the site with the aid of retractable wooden ladders. It has 150 rooms, constructed out of natural sandstone, with the addition of wooden beams and mortar.
Cliff Palace is a truly incredible site displaying unique architecture and murals from the Ancestral Puebloan culture and although we do know a great deal about the people that lived here, there is one mystery about the site: why was it abandoned around 1300 AD? Mesa Verde National Park is a U.S. National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. It is the largest archaeological preserve in the United States. The park was created in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, to protect some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the world, or as he said, preserve the works of man. As a result, it is the first, and still only, cultural National Park set aside by the National Park System. It occupies 81.4 square miles (211 km2) near the Four Corners and features numerous ruins of homes and villages built by the Ancestral Puebloan people, sometimes called the Anasazi. There are over four thousand archaeological sites and over six hundred cliff dwellings of the Pueblo people at the site.
The Anasazi inhabited Mesa Verde between 600 to 1300, though there is evidence they left before the start of the fifteenth century. They were mainly subsistence farmers, growing crops on nearby mesas. Their primary crop was corn, the major part of their diet. Men were also hunters, which further increased their food supply. The women of the Anasazi are famous for their elegant basket weaving. Anasazi pottery is as famous as their baskets; their artifacts are highly prized. The Anasazi kept no written records.
By the year 750, the people were building mesa-top villages made of adobe. In the late 1190s, they began to build the cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is famous.
Mesa Verde is best known for cliff dwellings, which are structures built within caves and under outcroppings in cliffs — including Cliff Palace, thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The Spanish term Mesa Verde translates into English as green table. It is considered to contain some of the most notable and best preserved archaeological sites.

Travel Colorado - Visiting Mesa Verde National Park
Take a tour of Mesa Verde in Colorado, United States -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Southwestern Colorado serves as the backdrop for Mesa Verde, one of the great windows into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people.
Meaning green table, Mesa Verde was first discovered by Spanish explorers moving west to California.
However, it wasn't until the late 19th century that the famous cliff dwellings, like the Cliff Palace, were discovered.
The cliff dwellings, built under rocky outcroppings and in caves, were home to the natives for hundreds of years.
Hard sandstone and adobe were the main building materials for these houses.
Though much of the ruins are well-preserved, much vandalism and theft took place in the early years of the area's discovery.
To protect this piece of history, Mesa Verde was named a U.S. National Park in 1906, and is a National Historic Landmark today.

Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde National Park
14 July 2010
The Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The structure built by the Ancient Pueblo Peoples is located in Mesa Verde National Park in their former homeland region. The cliff dwelling and park are in the southwestern corner of Colorado, in the Southwestern United States.
Mesa Verde National Park is a U.S. National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. It was created in 1906 to protect some of the best preserved cliff dwellings in the world. The park occupies 81.4 square miles (211 km2) (211 square kilometers) near the Four Corners and features numerous ruins of homes and villages built by the Ancestral Puebloan people, sometimes called the Anasazi. The Ancestral Puebloans made these stone villages their home in the 13th century, however, the first Ancestral Puebloans settled in Mesa Verde over 600 years before the cliff dwellings were ever built. These first people are known as the Basketmakers and they lived in pithouses clustered into small villages usually built on mesa tops but sometimes in the overhangs of the cliffs. These hunter gatherer people settled and began farming and using the bow and arrow, a weapon that was more efficient and accurate than the atlatl.
By 750 CE, the people were building mesa-top villages made of adobe. By the late 12th century they began to build the cliff dwellings for which Mesa Verde is famous. The Spanish term Mesa Verde translates into English as green table. Approximately 600 of the over 4700 archeological sites found in Mesa Verde National Park are cliff dwellings.

Cliff Palace was constructed primarily out of sandstone, mortar and wooden beams. The sandstone was shaped using harder stones, and a mortar of soil, water and ash was used to hold everything together. Chinking stones were placed within the mortar to fill gaps and provide stability. Many of the walls were decorated with colored earthen plasters, which were the first to erode over time. Many visitors wonder about the relatively small size of the doorways at Cliff Palace; the explanation being that at the time the average man was under 5' 6, while the average woman was closer to 5'.Cliff Palace contains 23 kivas (round sunken rooms of ceremonial importance), and 150 rooms and had a population of approximately 100 people. One kiva, in the center of the ruin, is at a point where the entire structure is partitioned by a series of walls with no doorways or other access portals. The walls of this kiva were plastered with one color on one side and a different color on the opposing side. It is estimated that around 100 people inhabited Cliff Palace during its time of use. It is thought that Cliff Palace was a social, administrative site with high ceremonial usage.Archaeologists believe that Cliff Palace contained more clans than the surrounding Mesa Verde communities. This belief stems from the higher ratio of rooms to kivas. Cliff Palace has a room to kiva ratio of 9 to 1. The average room to kiva ratio for a Mesa Verde community is 12 to 1.This ratio of kivas to rooms may suggest that Cliff Palace might have been the center of a large polity that included surrounding small communities.

President Theodore Roosevelt on June 29, 1906, set aside Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado. This land, inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans for over 700 years, included the most complete and extensive concentration of prehistoric cliff dwellings in the United States. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. In fact, these sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States.
The Native Americans first settled on the Colorado Plateau and farmed the mesas. Life was hard in the arid climate, boasting warm summers, cold winters, and limited rainfall. They lived in various settlements above ground until AD 1100, when they started constructing the massive cliff dwellings.
Many have thought that the Ancestral Puebloans retreated to the cliff dwellings to hide from aggressors, but archeological evidence does not support that theory. In fact, the entire region lived in harmony. The cliff dwellings do offer better protection from the elements than the mesa-top sites, which may be one reason we see so many similar dwellings across the southwest.
Between AD 1200 and 1400, there was a mass exodus from the region. To this date, we still do not know why. Perhaps the climate changed significantly, eliminating the ability to farm on the mesa. What do we know, is that their descendants live on in modern tribes residing in the Rio Grande river valley in New Mexico, the Ute in Colorado, and the Hopi in Arizona.
Each year, new dwellings are continued to be uncovered, allowing researchers to peer deeper and deeper into the past. It is this continued effort that has led to the decade old change in name from Anasazi to Ancestral Puebloan to reflect the people who lived here.
When traveling in the Southwest, there are many must-see National Parks,. This is one of them. The fact that you can still walk the grounds and experience the cliff dwellings from within, make it not only a wondrous educational opportunity, but an experiential one as well. The park is open year-round and worth spending at least three days exploring its history.
