Hike Waterfall Slot Canyon Kanarra Creek - Utah Hiking Trails
Slot canyon hike with waterfalls along the Kanarra Creek in Kanarraville, Utah. This is one of my favorite Utah hiking trails so far! It's like a grown up chutes and ladders! Yet just another one of the fun things to do in Utah. The trail head is located just off Interstate 15. The parking lot is very easy to find. It costs $10 to park there. The town of Kanarraville is near Cedar City about one hour north of St. George. This hike is about 3-1/2 hours drive south from Salt Lake City. This hike has beautiful scenery. The first slot canyon and waterfall is about an hour into the hike. I could see how a slot canyon flash flood would be so scary! There is a ladder in place to clime to the top of the short waterfall. March 13, 2016.
Prepare to get your feet wet. The water was very cold and painful on the feet, but totally worth it! This would be a great summer hike when it's nice and hot. The trail is not too steep, but there are some rocks and boulders to climb over. Also, there is the metal ladder to climb up when you get to the first waterfall. I definitely recommend this hike to anyone visiting Utah. This is one of the best Utah hikes ever!
I enjoyed this Sunday Funday hike with Emily and Elissa. It was a beautiful perfect day. This is my church. I shot video of this hike with my Canon Elf point and shoot camera.

John Wayne Pioneer Trail | North Bend to Thorp | Snoqualmie Pass | July 2018
I returned last night from my two-day bike packing trip over the John Wayne Pioneer Trail (The part we rode is also known as Iron Horse State Park) in Washington State. Our ride went from North Bend at the Cedar Falls Trailhead to the Thorp Trailhead. We stopped at Lake Easton State Park to camp. My 31 year old son rode with me and my wife dropped us off at the first trailhead and picked us up at our final trailhead. She also served as support, meeting us at the campground when our first day was done.
First day was a 40 mile ride approx. My GPS app did not function properly either day because of the four tunnels we passed through. The second day, after we cleared the tunnel MapMyRide told me I had just gone 1650 miles per hour!
The first 22 miles of the ride was a constant but not terrible climb. We stopped to walk a few times because my son, who is an experienced and well conditioned hiker, but not a cyclist, just got wore out from the constant uphill. I think I could have made the climb if I had been with a rider who could also make it and who would have encouraged me to keep on. I am certain I would not have made it without walking if I had been alone.
Once clearing the tunnel at the summit we camp quickly to Hyak rest stop. This is the only place on the trail where there is fresh water. non potable water is available almost constantly along the trail if you have a water filter with you. Upgraded pit toilets are situated frequently along the trail.
The trail between Hyak (the summit) and Lake Easton State Park feels mostly flat but was challenging - especially for my son) after making the climb. We arrived at Lake Easton State park 8 hrs and 30 minutes after beginning our day. The signs on the trail for the State park will lead you four miles off the trail onto the opposite end of the park from Bicycle camping sites (I think there are only two designated for bicycle camping) but it is mostly downhill. Sort of nice after the long day. The bicycle camping sites are not on the lake. We wished they had been.
I chose to stay at Lake Easton State Park because I have experience camping at state parks. There are, however, back country camping sites all along the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. Almost every site has a pit toilet and non potable water in the form of a pond or stream nearby. My wife met us at the park with ice cold drinks and lots of water. We determined that we would have her return the next morning at carry our camping gear with her. It would have been a good idea to have had her deliver them to us at the campsite. That way we would not have had to pack them up the mountain! On the other hand, we would not have had them had we chosen to stay in one of the back country sites. At the very least she could have given them to us at Hyak and saved us packing them during the steps part of the trip. Live and learn.
Tent camping is hard on this old body. It was so hot I could not sleep well and began having leg cramps. I had to get up at 1:30 AM and do about an hour of stretching to get them to settle down!
Second day we rode out of the State Park, at 7:30 AM, to the small town of Easton, just one mile from the bicycle camping area. We got a coffee at the Hitching Post - a small convenience store, service station, restaurant, motel. The trail runs alongside Easton and we were on our way. Thirteen miles to Cle Elum, it was hot. My wife met us there and refilled our water. Just eighteen miles left to Thorp.
The ride from Cle Elum to Thorp is beautiful as it follows along the Yakima River. We watched a guided fly fishing group float alongside us from a few moments. It was cooler than I expected and with many more trees than I imagined.
Thorp TrailHead was a bit confusing to find for my wife tp pick us up. But it is only a mile or so from the Fruit stand/Antique Store at the Thorp exit.

Exploring Comb Ridge Utah April 2018
This video summarizes an early April 2018 trip to explore the east side of Comb Ridge along what is called Butler Wash, near Bluff Utah.
Bluff, Utah has a few hotel-motels, RV sites with tent sites, a couple good restaurants, and one place to get gasoline and supplies. Comb Ridge Bistro is excellent for coffee and food.
I chose to stay the first night at Sand Island which is very near the south entrance to Comb Ridge. Sand Island is a semi primitive campsite with a nice host family, dry toilets, potable water, fire rings, a few grills, picnic tables and lots of blow sand. If tent camping prepare for the blow sand. Campground was very quite and cost $15/night.
The sites included in this trip were;
Wolfman Panel and Ruins
Big Crane site
Double Stack Ruins
Procession Panel
Monarch Ruin
Cold Spring Ruin
Split Level Ruin
Fishmouth Cave and Ruin
Butler Wash Road was very well graded and did not have to utilize 4WD. Road was much better than the Coyote Gulch road for comparison. Many free, primitive campsites are available along Butler Wash and I felt very safe in this area primarily due to the lack of people.
ATT Cell phone coverage was good in Bluff, Sand Island but was marginal along Butler Wash. Sometimes up on the Comb itself you could get coverage. Deep in the canyons though, even my Garmin GPS failed to pick up any signal and Gaiagps stopped functioning.
By far my favorite locations were Cold Spring Ruin and Procession Panel. All ruins and petroglyph panels were easy to find and get to, except for Procession Panel. I followed the many Procession Panel cairns but one cairn path routed me to a steep approach so had to back track and choose a less sketchy route. Best to drop into the canyon as soon as you can instead of proceeding higher up on top of the Comb.
I did not see much of any wildlife while there. I did see large cat tracks inside Cold Spring Cave and a few in the drainage areas. I did not see any snakes but a snake track of one inside Cold Spring Cave.
All of the area was very clean and just a few instances of vandalism. The hiker pottery museums are becoming abundant and would like to discourage people from doing this and leave the sites as you found them.
Weather in early April was amazing. I made sure to time the trip based along no rain forecasts. Temperature was in the high 20s one night and during the day it would warm up to the 70s. Very low humidity so hydration important.
Hard to recommend on how many days you will need. I chose 4 days and this was perfect and allowed me to explore some of the river ruins.
In regard to the video, I chose to include many minutes of driving the Butler Wash road. I wish that this had been available to me prior so I could get an idea what condition the road would be in. I also included excessive footage of the Procession Panel. Many people were asking questions about the glyphs and thought this would give people an idea of the procession characters.

Scofield, Utah - Drone Video - 4K
Scofield is a town in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 23 at the 2010 census.[3] Scofield's name is frequently applied to the 1900 mine disaster in the Pleasant Valley Coal Company's Winter Quarters mine. The community was named for General Charles W. Scofield, a timber contractor and local mine official. It is the smallest incorporated area in Utah by population.

Three Peaks Camping and Kanarra Falls Hiking. Cedar City, UT (Home Video)
Maile and I went hiking and camping in Southwest Utah. We went to Three Peaks Campground, where it's very quiet and secluded, and had a great time. The cost to camp for the night was only $10 and we had a great spot. The falls we went to is in a town called Kanarraville, and it was also a lot of fun. going early means getting really cold, but going late means lots of crowds, so you decide what's important to you if you ever do this hike. If you've never hiked in a watery slot-canyon before, this one is outstanding. I strongly recommend it to anybody who comes thru this area. We did the hike in 3 hours, but you can go farther and see more than we did, too.

BACKPACKING - Our Adventure at The Rattlesnake Creek Trail
In this twenty minutes long video, you will see a little of our fantastic, yet, hard backpacking trip in June of 2018. My daughter Bryanna has autism, and it is tough for her to go out of her daily routine (She also doesn't like being filmed). However, she was so brave to go on this adventure with me for two nights and three days. Our goal was get to camp on Friday, hike on Saturday all the way to Ashdown Creek Gorge, and leave on Sunday. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it to Ashdown Gorge. It's okay because this trip was not about the destination, but about the journey. I was carrying 25 pounds in my backpack, and she was bringing 20 pounds in hers, yet, she never gave up.
The Rattlesnake Trail is adjacent to Cedar Breaks National Monument, and it is a technical trail rated at difficult. The entire descending path is almost 10 miles point to point, but because we did not have a ride waiting for us on the other side, we had to hike it in and hike it out, which means we descended about 3,000 feet and hiked back up. This backpacking trip was one of the hardest things I have ever done physically, and I can imagine what it must have been for my daughter, but I want my her to learn to deal with difficulties and to be confident that she can do anything in this life, even when I'm not around any longer to protect her.
Therefore, I hope to inspire everyone out there with our little adventure. If we were able to finish this hike, you could do it too, and you will come out of your experience as a better person. I promise!
Please feel free to comment below and share your experience :-)

Route of the Hiawatha Rails to Trails
Route of the Hiawatha Rails to Trails - Mountain Biking
Crown Jewel of America's Rails to Trails
It is one of the most scenic stretches of railroad in the country. Winding through ten tunnels and over seven high steel trestles, the 15-mile route crosses the rugged Bitterroot Mountains between Idaho and Montana. The Route of the Hiawatha is best known for the long, dark St. Paul Pass Taft Tunnel which is 1.7 miles and under the state line. Have a good bike light (bring a backup light), and dress appropriately, the tunnel is wet and cold. For more information: ridethehiawatha.com Phone# 208.744.1301
I rode the trail on September 22nd and 23rd 2012 and filmed the scenes using a GoPro helmet camera. Put this ride on your bucket list as a must do!
