Cold Spring Tavern! Old stagecoach stop near Santa Barbara, California
Cold Spring Tavern was established as a stagecoach stop in 1865. Let's take a closer look at this antique-filled, Western saloon - that still operates today - serving local wine & food including venison, duck, and rabbit, and kangaroo?!
The tavern is located 20 minutes north of Santa Barbara, if you're heading to Solvang, Santa Ynez, Chumash Casino, etc. It is about a mile off Highway 154 along Stagecoach Road in the San Marcos Pass.

Cold Spring Tavern
Here is a question for visitors to Santa Barbara- - Where can you go and have stunning views of the Santa Ynez River Valley over looking Lake Cachuma? - Where you can play a challenging 6800 yard, Par 71 golf Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course? The answer is Rancho San Marcos - And when you play golf at Rancho San Marcos don't be surprised if you find the only crowd on the tees is a family of deer. And after a round of golf where to dine?
Just over the hill from Santa Barbara off Highway 154 near Rancho San Marcos is Cold Spring Tavern. Cold Spring was voted the most romantic restaurant in the Nipper's restaurant poll several years ago. The tavern dates back to 1865. In 1941 Adelaide Ovington bought Cold Spring Tavern for $2000. It is still in her family today. Cold Spring Tavern actually has more than one spring as there are 52 springs on the property. The natural spring water is served at the bar and restaurant and used in all food and beverage preparation. The restaurant serves classic American food with specialties like chili, burgers and BBQ tri tip. They also have fish and grilled meats in the evening.
Breakfast Sat & Sunday only Lunch 11 - 3 daily Dinner from 5 pm.

Stagecoach Road is one of Santa Barbara County's most famous roads. It is part of the original Stagecoach Route when the coach's ruled the terrain from 1861 to 1910. In 1910 the first automobile drove across the San Marcos Pass, effectively ending the stage coach era. However, Stagecoach Rd remained the only means of traversing the Cold Springs portion of the San Marcos Pass until 1963, when the construction of the Cold Springs Arc Bridge (and modern day Hwy 154) was completed and motorists could finally pass over Cold Springs and the winding Stagecoach Rd.
Stagecoach Road is also home to The Cold Springs Tavern, an historic stagecoach stop dating back to 1868, when it was home to the Chinese coolies who built the Santa Ynez Turnpike Rd over the San Marcos Pass. Many original buildings (from different time periods) are still there and there is an air of history that surrounds the place. The Tavern today is one of the most popular places to go to on the weekends, for motorcyclists and motorists alike. On Sundays, the main parking lot is reserved strictly for motorcycles; autos must find space on the roadside. Live music, outdoor tri-tip bbq (or indoor restaurant) and lots of great folks can be found on Sundays, while other days the restaurant is the main attraction (although on Saturday the bar is open as well, but it is usually a sparse crowd). Everyone is welcome at Cold Springs and it is an eclectic group spanning all walks of life.
Stagecoach Road in modern times is a short one, spanning only 5.3 miles from start to finish. Most folks are barely aware of the first 1/2 mile, as the main signage on Hwy 154 for Stagecoach Rd is actually further down from the actual beginning of Stagecoach Rd.
The road itself is quite twisty and in fair condition. It does get a bit bumpy in spots and also sports a few potholes here and there. The scenery is for the most part California Chaparral, although you get into some thick tree line from time to time. Because Stagecoach Road is a popular one, you also need to pay attention to traffic, especially in the blind corners and on Sundays, when traffic is at it's heaviest.

No Place Like Home Nojoqui Falls
If you are like a lot of locals along the Central Coast, you occasionally see signs for attractions here and there and think One day I'm going to take that exit and check that out. But the day never comes. Well, we paid a visit to one of those attractions this week and found out the Nojoqui Falls offer another reason there's No Place Like Home.
Just a short jaunt off Highway 101 near Gaviota, it's a little hide-away worth exploring.
Just the beauty, the cool air, and the sound of the water, says Chrissy Hunt of Buellton when asked why she brings her dog up there fairly regularly.
The Nojoqui Falls are part of a Santa Barbara County park that offers an easy getaway from the hustle and bustle we all need a break from now and then.
The 100 foot falls aren't massive, but worth a visit. And the rain we got this winter and spring makes now a great time to make the trek. Amy Ganci lives in the San Fernando Valley now, but grew up in Santa Barbara. She brought her daughter up to check it out. It's beautiful! I haven't been up here probably since I was in high school, and it's gorgeous.
You can thank the Santa Ynez earthquake fault for this little natural wonder, and unlike many waterfalls, the Nojoqui falls fall outward over a sandstone wall that continually grows as the water leaves calcium deposits behind.
It provides a natural playground for the young and a chance for young and old to re-discover the peace to be found in these kind of environments.
You don't have to make a day-trip out of it. It's five minutes off Highway 101, maybe a five minute walk and you are sitting in a little place of serenity. Breathe it in and then head back and hit the highway if you'd like.
The walk up is very easy, it's only a quarter of a mile or so. Anyone who isn't up for it shouldn't mind passing the time at one of the picnic tables at the bottom of the hill. There's a wonderful amount of birds down there. In fact, this morning we saw a barn owl up in one of the Palm trees, says Jan Ross, who was visiting from Goleta.
There is beautiful vegetation around and a creek that flows from the falls making the journey up as enjoyable as the destination. We all need to relax now and then, and fortunately for us, there are plenty of places to do so, right in our own backyard.
