- Welcome to Milton, Massachusetts. Located just 8 miles South of Boston, Milton is
a town of approximately 27,000 residents and home to the Blue Hills Reservation
which offers 7,000 acres of protected land with hiking, biking and skiing. In 2007
and 2009, Money Magazine listed Milton as the 7th and 5th, respectively, on it's
annual list of Best Places to Live in the United States. All six school buildings are new
and the facilities are state of the art. A popular French Immersion program starts
in the first grade and continues through the 12th grade. Milton is also home to the
prestigious co-educational, independent preparatory, boarding and day school Milton
Academy. We love having the city of Boston in our backyard with its shopping,
dining, theatre and cultural enrichment just a short 15 minute ride by public
transportation or car.
We know you'll love this English Colonial set two minutes from East Milton Square
to the left or Cunningham Park to the right.
The current owners leveled off the backyard and had the grounds professionally
landscaped which pop during the spring, summer and fall months. However wait
until you see how they transform their backyard in the winter. The Boston Garden
maybe home to the Bruins but this spring garden turns into a hockey rink even Tim
Thomas would be impressed with.
With nine rooms that have the detail you would expect from the 1930's and all the
amenities of 2011. This home offers an updated kitchen, oversized dining room,
grand living room, den and enclosed porch overlooking the beautifully manicured
backyard.
Upstairs, you will find 4 corner bedrooms with ample closet space and lots of natural light.
With over 2,000 square feet of living space, central air, a finished family room in the
basement we are certain this house will not disappoint.

The neighborhood kids play hopscotch, dance and have some pretty serious ball games on the corner. Parents standby refereeing, neighbors share gardening tips and actively watch out for one another - young and old. The block party is an international event and it all works like it has for several generations. So if you are looking for more than a house.... check this one out!

Michael Chapman - The early influence of the movies (1/94)
To listen to more of Michael Chapman’s stories, go to the playlist:
Born in New York in 1935, Michael Chapman is an innovative cinematographer. He has worked with a number of acclaimed directors including Martin Scorsese with whom he created his two best known films, 'Taxi Driver' and 'Raging Bull'. [Listener: Glen Ade Brown; date recorded: 2004]
TRANSCRIPT: I was born in... in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1935 – Wellesley is a suburb of Boston – and my father was a teacher in a high school in Wellesley for many years, sort of much beloved, 'Goodbye Mr Chips' sort of teacher. And my mother was a housewife until my brother and I were... didn't have to be looked after all the time, and then she became a librarian in a town, not Wellesley, but nearby where we had moved when I was in the third grade. And I grew up in a perfectly ordinary... I can't remember quite what the word, a shabby, genteel, something, whatever, not genteel, no, but... but, I mean, on the... on the pay of a high school teacher, but perfectly nice, you know, solid family. And I was of an age where there was no television when I was young, and movies were everything as far as any sort of visual information or entertainment went, and even when I was a small child in Wellesley, the... for some reason the Wellesley school system had Wednesday afternoons off, and just little children, I am amazed that they... it was... was a more innocent age I guess, let us take the bus. We took the bus down to Wellesley Hills to the Colonial Theatre and saw movies that, for children, on... on Wednesday afternoons... and then when we moved to Sherburne I took the bus every Saturday afternoon, just about to... Sherburne was a tiny little country town without anything, but we... we took the bus to Framingham, which was the large town nearby, where there were three theatres, and where there, every Saturday afternoon there were Westerns and various things for kids, and... and I was devoted to movies as a child, as... as all the other children were, because there was no television. We could listen to serials, like 'Captain Midnight' on the radio, but for anything really exciting we had to see movies and... and was there a whole culture of... of children going to movies, and movies aimed at children, really small children. 'Abbott and Costello' movies and... and Westerns and things like that, almost all in black and white, and almost all what would be considered, you know, just barely B movies now, in terms of price and... and production and all that. And also, and... and I only have... only recently realized what an influence they must have been on me, also newsreels. I was reading a book by Godard, it was talking about newsreels and I realized how much newsreels probably meant to me, because in those days they were almost always shot on... there was... of course, they were all black and white, but they were almost always shot in... in 35 millimeter, you know the Imo was the... was the combat camera of the Second World War, in the United States it was a 35 millimeter camera, so they were really beautiful big negatives, and... and amazing footage, because the newsreels, when I was a child, were of the Second World War, so there would be, you know, airplanes flying and bombs exploding and... and battleships firing huge cannons and things, and they were extraordinarily powerful images of... of a world far away from Wellesley or Sherburne, Massachusetts, but... and far more engrossing and, I mean, what... what seemed like the real world, and they must have had a... a vast influence on my thought... thinking about movies I think, and I didn't realize that until many years later. But they certainly did, as did 'Abbott and Costello' and the Westerns and all the things we saw as children. But I didn't have any idea that movies were made by ordinary mortals like myself, you know, that a little boy from... from Massachusetts could go and make movies, I... and it never even occurred to me. Nor did it occur to me, years later when I was more or less grown up.
Chamber Nite @ Greylock
If you missed Chamber Nite @ Greylock, held on Wednesday, January 20, you certainly missed out on lots of fun and excitement! The program features a Q&A with college students in which the Founders apply the Bill of Rights to our own time. It concludes with Henry's famous Give me liberty, or give me death speech that inspired the idea of America in the first place.

Why Do People In Old Movies Talk Weird?
It’s not quite British, and it’s not quite American – so what gives? Why do all those actors of yesteryear have such a distinct and strange accent?

If you’ve ever heard old movies or newsreels from the thirties or forties, then you’ve probably heard that weird old-timey voice.
It sounds a little like a blend between American English and a form of British English. So what is this cadence, exactly?
This type of pronunciation is called the Transatlantic, or Mid-Atlantic, accent. And it isn’t like most other accents – instead of naturally evolving, the Transatlantic accent was acquired. This means that people in the United States were taught to speak in this voice. Historically Transatlantic speech was the hallmark of aristocratic America and theatre. In upper-class boarding schools across New England, students learned the Transatlantic accent as an international norm for communication, similar to the way posh British society used Received Pronunciation – essentially, the way the Queen and aristocrats are taught to speak.
It has several quasi-British elements, such a lack of rhoticity. This means that Mid-Atlantic speakers dropped their “r’s” at the end of words like “winner” or “clear”. They’ll also use softer, British vowels – “dahnce” instead of “dance”, for instance. Another thing that stands out is the emphasis on clipped, sharp t’s. In American English we often pronounce the “t” in words like “writer” and “water” as d’s. Transatlantic speakers will hit that T like it stole something. “Writer.” “Water.”
But, again, this speech pattern isn’t completely British, nor completely American. Instead, it’s a form of English that’s hard to place… and that’s part of why Hollywood loved it.
There’s also a theory that technological constraints helped Mid-Atlantic’s popularity. According to Professor Jay O’Berski, this nasally, clipped pronunciation is a vestige from the early days of radio. Receivers had very little bass technology at the time, and it was very difficult – if not impossible – to hear bass tones on your home device. Now we live in an age where bass technology is booms from the trunks of cars across America.
So what happened to this accent? Linguist William Labov notes that Mid-Atlantic speech fell out of favor after World War II, as fewer teachers continued teaching the pronunciation to their students. That’s one of the reasons this speech sounds so ‘old-timey’ to us today: when people learn it, they’re usually learning it for acting purposes, rather than for everyday use. However, we can still hear the effects of Mid-Atlantic speech in recordings of everyone from Katherine Hepburn to Franklin D. Roosevelt and, of course, countless films, newsreels and radio shows from the 30s and 40s.

Denmark Vesey
Denmark Vesey, originally Telemaque, (1767 – July 2, 1822) was an African-American man who was most famous for planning a slave rebellion in the United States in 1822. He was enslaved in South Carolina. After purchasing his freedom, he planned an extensive slave rebellion. Word of the plans was leaked, and authorities arrested the plot's leaders at Charleston, South Carolina, before the uprising could begin. Vesey and others were convicted and executed.
Many antislavery activists came to regard Vesey as a hero. During the American Civil War, abolitionist Frederick Douglass used Vesey's name as a battle cry to rally African-American regiments, especially the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
