Old West USA - Rare Pictures of the Old Wild West -- U.S.A.
The famous and the infamous have called Deadwood and the Black Hills home over the last several centuries. Lewis and Clark, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, George Armstrong Custer, Poker Alice and the Sundance Kid. Calamity Jane, and many others have all passed through here in search of fortune and adventure. But long before the arrival of the white man, the land was home to the Cheyenne, Kiowa, Pawnee, Soux or Lakota Indians. The Soux, who migrated from Minnnesota in the 1700's, dominated a tract of land large enough to support the buffalo herds on which they subsisted.
60 FABULOUS COLOR VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS CAPTURE STREET SCENES OF THE UNITED STATES IN THE 1940S
After recovering from the crises of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, the spirit of human ingenuity and American entrepreneurship found a way to persevere in the 1940s.
As the country prepared for war in the early '40s, collaboration between businesses and the American people represented a collective resourcefulness. These fabulous photos, were taken by 35mm Kodachrome film from Dave Gelinas's collection, offer a candid look at an America in transition and the changing cities that people called home.

Arizona Flag
Flag of Arizona
The state flag of Arizona represents the copper star of Arizona rising from a blue field in the face of a setting sun (quote from legislation).
In 1911 a rifle team from the Arizona Territory was scheduled for a competition match in Ohio and needed a flag to represent their team. Charles Harris (the Adjutant General of the territory) quickly designed what was to become the Arizona state flag (Arizona was admitted to the Union in 1912 - this flag became the official flag of Arizona in 1917).
The 13 gold and red beams or rays on Arizona's flag represent the sun setting over the western desert and the original 13 colonies (red and gold colors were also carried by Coronado's Spanish expedition in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola in 1540).
The center star signifies copper production (Arizona produces more copper than any other state in the country). The field of blue is the same liberty blue as the United States flag. Blue and old gold are also Arizona's official state colors. The license plate below features these colors and also Arizona's state nickname (Grand Canyon State).
Tribal Land Claims: A Generation of Federal Indian Law on the Edge
The Library Channel is pleased to present the eighth installment of The Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture, and Community with Tribal Land Claims: A Generation of Federal Indian Law on the Edge. Attorney Arlinda Locklear demonstrates how attorneys for tribes have used the doctrine of discovery or federal common law to assert claims in tribal land claim cases. She lays out the history of the Oneida land claim case against the state of New York beginning in 1784 when the state began an aggressive campaign to acquire Oneida territory leading to their currently pending case.
Arlinda Locklear (Lumbee) has a particularly distinguished career in federal Indian law. During her thirty five years' experience in the field, Locklear has represented tribes throughout the U.S. in federal and state courts on treaty claims to water and land, taxation disputes with states and local authorities, reservation boundary issues, and federal recognition of tribes. In particular, she is a nationally recognized expert in federal recognition of tribes and Indian land claims. Locklear began her career as an attorney at the Native American Rights Fund in Boulder, CO, and later transferred to the Washington DC office. As directing attorney for seven years in the Washington, DC office, Locklear supervised significant litigation of Indian issues as well as the legislative work of the office. Locklear was a member of the board of Advisors for the Encyclopedia of Native Americans in the 20th Century and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of North Carolina, Pembroke. Locklear was awarded the Outstanding Woman of Color Award, given by the National Institute of Women of Color in 1987; the Julian T. Pierce Award, given by Pembroke State University in 1994; the 1995 Carpathian Award for Speaking Out, given by North Carolina Equity; the Parks Award for Community Service, given by North Carolina State University in 2003; the 2008 Kate Stoneman Award for outstanding achievement in the legal profession, given by Albany Law School; and the 2009 Distinguished Alumna Award, from the College of Charleston. Locklear earned her law degree from Duke University School of Law and is a member of the Bars of Maryland, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia. She also holds honorary doctorates from State University of New York, Oneonta, and North Carolina State University.

Cities of Gold (Arizona) - #50StatesAlbum - #Paperslide Music Video
Download the mp3, lyrics and additional materials from Discovery Education Streaming
Paperslide video illustrated by Jann Maser
50 States Album: A 50-song album covering the basic history, geography, and economic structure of each state in the U.S.
Lyrics/Explanation -
1st Verse:
Marcos de Niza
First European here in 1539
Coronado's search for the cities of gold
Didn't leave him far behind
Still Spain developed this territory
'Til Mexico said Hey, we're fine
Nueva California
A part until a war with these United States
Mexico, they lost and were - paid off in 1848
Giving up the land in our southwest
That would later confederate
Explanation:
In 1539 Marcos de Niza, a Spanish Franciscan, was the first European to arrive in Arizona (AZ).
De Niza reported that he had seen a gold city in his travels, so Coronado, a Spanish explorer, traveled to what is now AZ in 1540, searching for the Seven Cities of Gold.
For about 300 years Spain developed this land. Then Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, and what is now AZ was controlled by Mexico, part of a territory they called Nueva California (Also Alta California).
The United States beat Mexico in the Mexican-American War and purchased land in the southwest territory (including what is now AZ) for $15 million in 1848.
AZ was part of New Mexico at the start of the Civil War and joined the confederacy.
Chorus:
So much more than the old school western half of New Mexico
Arizona - the copper state, where the Grand Canyon shows
We got the 48th, the last contiguous role
And Phoenix - our city of gold
Explanation:
Jefferson Davis referred to the western half of New Mexico as Arizona. And in 1863 the western half of New Mexico was officially declared by Abraham Lincoln as the Arizona Territory.
AZ is called the Copper State due to the importance of that mineral to the economic history. It is also called the Grand Canyon State because the largest part of the Grand Canyon resides in the north.
AZ was the 48th state to be admitted to the United States on Feb.14th, 1912. It was the last contiguous state to be admitted.
Phoenix, the capital of AZ, could be considered a modern city of gold due to its growth and thriving economy.
2nd Verse:
North Arizona
We've got the forests, mountains and the Colorado Plateau
The Grand Canyon is picturesque
Moderate temperatures and some snow
Then in the south - basin-range desert
Continues into Mexico
A southwest state
Where we can meet at the quadpoint at the Four Corners
Where Colorado, and New Mexico, and Utah with us collide
We have some southern desert borders
In the east we have Alpine
Explanation:
In the north you will find many forests, mountains, the Grand Canyon, and the Colorado Plateau. The north has seasons with moderate temperatures and many of the mountain areas get snow.
In the south you will find the Basin and Range area known for deserts, hot summers and very mild winters.
The southern border of AZ is the northern border of Mexico which shares the Basin and Range desert climate.
AZ is located in the southwest of the U.S.
The Four Corners States (AZ, NM, CO, UT) all meet at a point in the Colorado Plateau called the quadpoint.
The southern border of AZ is largely desert, and a well-known ski town is Alpine.
Bridge:
Ditat Deus carved on a trunk of a Pablo Verde
In the hot dry sun of the Sonoran desert
Just south of Tucson
While a Cactus Wren lets out a warning
In the north canyons
And glides over a field of Saguaro Blossoms
Over Sedona and Williams
Explanation:
State Motto: Ditat Deus (God enriches)
State Tree: Pablo Verde
The desert in south AZ is called the Sonoran
Tucson is a significant city in southern AZ
State Bird: Cactus Wren
State Flower: Saguaro Blossom
Sedona and Williams are smaller towns in northern AZ
3rd Verse:
Before the Great Depression
Copper and cotton were the economic kings
After the 20s tourism boomed
From dude ranches like Flying V
Experience the old west
With real cowboy amenities
We're air conditioned
So after the Second World War, the people flocked
Snowbirds, or retirement, for vacation or a ski stop
Copper, cotton, cattle, citrus, climate
Five C's, yea we've got a lot

America Two Views - Grand Canyon Arizona and Key West Florida - YouTube
America is so diverse, so much to see and do that it would take more than one lifetime to take it all in.
Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is a look back in the past, a time when the earth was forming. The rock formations, colors, wildlife and sheer size just can't be imagined or should not be seen just on a small screen. Go and explore....
Key West in Florida is more man made, we were told the island was originally 2 square miles but was enlarged to 4 square miles to accommodate people, hotels, airport and the military listening post. It's laid back and except for the vacationers, pretty quiet.
Dining on the waterfront fresh sea food was amazing...

Time River
TIME RIVER
Time River is a totally silent dramatic film. The story is completely in the visuals. It stars William A. Smith as an Old Man dying in an Arizona nursing home. He indicates to his family that he wishes to return to the desert town of Time River. His family drives him to the remnants of the old town, now a ghost town. As they push him through the deserted streets he sees the buildings and memories of his times in Time River. You see his memories as a Young Man (played by Jon Sharkey) who re-lives his first love with a beautiful and loving Saloon Girl, played by Cindy Womack.
Principal photography was completed in 1973, but the film was not premiered until 1987 due to multiple problems filming the closing credits.
