Columbine - Twining N.R.T. Hiking Trail - Red, River & Questa, New Mexico - 4k UHD
I produced the original version of this video last year. After watching itagain, I decided that it could use some editing. So I increased the number of scenes and eliminated most of the music. In retrospect, I definitely could use a gimbal stabilizer. Maybe I should buy one. Maybe?
Yes, we hike here often. When it gets to be 100+ in Texas. This Northern New Mexico trail is a tremendous respite from the Texas heat. The campgrounds we stay at are between touristy Red River and working class Questa, New Mexico.
Access:
Begin either from Columbine Campground on Trail #71 or from Twining Campground on Trail #90. Arrange for pickup at the other end.
Attractions and Considerations:
Designated as a National Recreation Trail in 1978. The trail follows the Columbine Canyon Trail #71 for the first 1.4 miles. Just past the Deer Creek crossing turn left up the Deer Creek Trail #69. Follow the trail switchbacks through aspen stands to the ridge above tree line with views to the west of Lobo Peak and Flag Mountain. Trail #69 turns north, reentering bristlecone pine forest. Here you will join the Gold Hill Trail #64 which follows the open ridge above tree line over the summit of Gold Hill (12,711 ft) and above Goose Lake. The trail follows the ridge down to Bull of the Woods Pasture where it meets Trail #90 which ends at the Twining Campground in Taos Ski Valley.

Our second Northern New Mexico camping trip this summer. We wanted to cool off, again! It gets hella hot in Texas in June, July and August. But you knew that. By the way we weren't the only Texans there. You couldn't throw a rock without hitting a cowboy.

Red River Trip Hike to the Convergence of the Rio Grande & Red Rivers
While camping in the Red RIver, New Mexico area several day hikes were accomplished. One such hike was to the confluence of the Rio Grande and Red River. Our approach was from the plateau in the Wild Rivers Recreation Area of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. We descended from the Little Arsenic Trailhead down to the Rio Grande on a switchback trail that dropped 700 feet in less than a mile. From there we proceeded along the river's edge to the point where the Rio Grande meets the Red River. At this point you are directly below the area called La Junta -- a point on the plateau that rises 800 feet. From the confluence of the rivers it was a 5-mile out-and-back hike. The strenuous part of the hike in on the return where you climb 700 feet to reach the trailhead at the top of the plateau. The best time to do this hike is early morning -- the earlier, the better. And remember, it's a fee area and you need to pack-in, pack-out everything. You won't regret having done this hike and don't forget to wade in the water of both rivers at the point of their intersection, but be careful as the rocks are slippery and the current is swift.
