The Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center, Lawton, OK, hosts the traveling exhibition 50 Years of Powwow September 24, 2009 through January 3, 2010.
50 Years of Powwow was conceived and organized by the American Indian Center of Chicago, and developed by The Field Museum. The exhibition consists of photographs that document the traditional gathering of American Indians that has become a tradition in communities nationwide. The powwow is a celebration and extension of Indian traditions and an important vehicle for transmitting those traditions to younger generations
The photographs in the exhibition depict dancers, drummers, singers, craftspeople, and traditional foods, and explore how American Indians retain their traditional cultures and languages in todays urban world. Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum | Lawton Oklahoma
Welcome to Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum in Lawton Oklahoma. We recently visited this great little museum that shows the history of the early days of the Indian territory. The Apache tribes were brought here from Florida and Alabama prisons.
Later many other tribes were forced to come to Fort Sill, Comanche, Kiowa and the Southern Cheyennes just to name a few. The leader of the Comanche, Quanah Parker was forced to give up and learn new ways. He was the last of the Indian resistance in the southwest plains. Though Quanah Parker was never elected chief by his people, the US government appointed him to be the chief of all the Cheroke nation. There is some great reading at the following sites: and

Comanche People Maintain Pride in Their Heritage
The Comanche (Indian nation) once were called the “Lords of the Plains,” with an empire that included half the land area of current day Texas, large parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas and Colorado. The fierceness and battle prowess of these warriors on horseback delayed the settlement of most of West Texas for four decades. VOA’s Greg Flakus reports from Lawton, Oklahoma, that while their warrior days are over, the 15,000 members of the Comanche Nation remain a proud people.

Faces of America Comanche
The Comanche are a Native American nation from the Great Plains whose historic territory consisted of most of present-day northwestern Texas and adjacent areas in eastern New Mexico, southeastern Colorado, southwestern Kansas, western Oklahoma, and northern Chihuahua. The Comanche people are federally recognized as the Comanche Nation, headquartered in Lawton, Oklahoma. The Comanche were the dominant tribe on the southern Great Plains in the 18th and 19th centuries. They are often characterized as Lords of the Plains and, reflecting their prominence, they presided over a large area called Comancheria which a modern historian has characterized as the Comanche Empire. Comanche power was based on bison, horses, trading, and raiding. They hunted the bison of the Great Plains for food and skins; their adoption of the horse from Spanish colonists in New Mexico made them more mobile; they traded with the Spanish, French, Americans and neighboring Native American peoples; and (most famously) they waged war on and raided European settlements as well as other Native Americans.

Lawton, Oklahoma
The city of Lawton (Pawnee: Raaríhtaaruʾ) is the county seat of Comanche County, in the State of Oklahoma. Located in southwestern Oklahoma, about 87 mi (140 km) southwest of Oklahoma City, it is the principal city of the Lawton, Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. Built on former reservation lands of Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Indians, Lawton was founded on August 6, 1901, and was named after Major General Henry Ware Lawton, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in action in the Philippine–American War. BCM Thanksgiving Presentation
This was taken in Lawton Oklahoma near Cameron University at the BCM, Baptist student union.
There is a strong American Indian community in Lawton (primarily Comanche and Kiowa)....this is Comanche County after all...
Anyway, they are very proud of their heritage (as they should be) and they enjoy sharing it with everyone else. A strong number of people there were International Students sharing in our cultural holiday.
I wasn't there personally. It had to be an awesome experience for everyone who were there.
