1st Anniversary Bock by Deep Ellum Brewing - happy 1 year!
Deep Ellum Brewing Company's newest craft beer release
This oak aged, honey doppleboxk is DEBC's 1st year anniversary beer. We at DEBC can't believe how quickly a year can go by, and this is our gift for the support and love as we've grown right before your eyes.
1ST ANNIVERSARY BOCK
9.5% ABV 25 IBUs
aka The Lager Strikes Bock
Bocks, by their nature, and their inspiration, are reactionary. Bocks are claimed by many to have originated as 'the beer of Einbeck', but they came from brewer in Einbeck reacting to what brewers in Munich were up to. While a few newer iterations have popped up, bocks have remained mostly the same. This is our reaction. We pay homage to the original doppelbock, Salvator through naming and usage of literal tons of Munich Malt, but turn on the afterburners with the addition of nearly a thousand pounds of Texas Wildflower Honey from Sunnyvale Honey Farms and aging this massive lager on new, medium toast American White Oak.
STYLE: Oak Aged Honey Doppelbock
HOPS: Santiam, Mt. Hood, Liberty
MALTS: Munich Light
YEAST: California Lager
OTHER: Texas Wildflower Honey, American White Oak
PACKAGES: 50L

Senate committee looks for beer compromise
In regards to Senate Bill 515, brewpubs will only be allowed to self-distribute their beer if they only have a beer license and not a mixed beverage license. Brewpubs will still be able to get their product on store shelves, but they'll have to go through a distributor.
Davis Tucker, owner of North by Northwest Restaurant and Brewery and vice president of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, says the revisions were necessary to push the bills along and to grow the craft beer community.
No other adjustments were made to the Senate Bills 515, 516 and 518.
Last week, Senator John Carona, a Republican from Dallas, escalated the stakes by introducing a separate bill (SB 639) that could overhaul the whole industry's pricing structure. Adjustments were also made to SB 639 on Tuesday, but details regarding the changes have not been released.

Reading Through History: The Great Supreme Court Cases
Dallas, Texas
August 22, 1984
Protesters marched through the streets, destroyed property, spray-painted walls, broke windows, and threw dirty diapers and beer cans just outside of the Republican National Convention. Someone stole an American flag from a flagpole from a downtown building. Eventually, that flag ended up in the hands of Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade member Gregory Lee Johnson. At the height of the protests, Johnson poured kerosene on the flag and set it on fire. While the flag burned, he chanted stuff like “Red, white and blue, we spit on you, you stand for plunder, you will go under” and “Reagan, Mondale, which will it be? Either one means World War III.” Although no one got physically hurt because of it, some people who saw Johnson do this were pretty offended by it.
Soon after, police arrested him and charged him with violating a Texas law that said you can’t vandalize respected objects, if such action were likely to get people mad. A Texas court convicted Johnson and he was sentenced to one year in person and fined $2,000. He appealed his case to the Fifth Court of Appeals of Texas, but lost the appeal. He appealed again to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and they actually overturned his conviction, saying the First Amendment to the Constitution protects flag burning as symbolic speech. It also argued that Johnson did not hurt or threaten anyone by burning the flag.
Texas was like nuh-uh, and it asked the Supreme Court to hear the case. The Supreme Court agreed, and they heard arguments on March 21, 1989. At first, the Court considered if the First Amendment protected non-speech acts, since this wasn’t about Johnson’s verbal communication. So basically, they wondered if the act of burning the American flag should be considered expressive conduct.
Ultimately, they determined it was. In a highly controversial decision, the Court ruled 5-4 in favor of Johnson. The Court said that Texas could not ban flag burning. They also argued that Texas’ law that said you can’t vandalize respected objects didn’t prevent disturbing the peace. In fact, another Texas law already existed to prevent disturbing the peace without targeting flag burning.
Justice William Brennan delivered the opinion, but I am going to quote Justice Anthony Kennedy, as he put it pretty well. He said, “The hard fact is that sometimes we must make decisions we do not like. We make them because they are right, right in the sense that the law and the Constitution, as we see them, compel the result. And so great is our commitment to the process that, except in the rare case, we do not pause to express distaste for the result, perhaps for fear of undermining a valued principle that dictates the decision. This is one of those rare cases.”
The court had two major dissents. The first, by Justices William Rehnquist, Byron White, and Sandra Day O’Connor, argued that the American flag had a “unique status” that should be protected from desecration. Rehnquist wrote, “The flag is not simply another idea or point of view competing for recognition in the marketplace of ideas. Millions and millions of Americans regard it with an almost mystical reverence regardless of what sort of social, political, or philosophical beliefs they may have.”
Justice John Paul Stevens had a slightly different dissent. He argued it was more than about the flag being an important symbol. He argued that Johnson was only punished for how he expressed his opinion, not the opinion itself.
So basically, the decision automatically made laws in 48 of the 50 states invalid. However, just two weeks later, Congress passed the Flag Protection Act, which made it a federal crime to desecrate the American flag, kind of like a middle finger to the Supreme Court. But the Court had the last laugh. The same five person majority of justices struck down the law in the 1990 case United States v. Eichman. Since then, many in Congress have tried several times to pass an amendment outlawing flag burning, but each time they come up short.

ORAL TESTIMONY OF STEPHEN KING
DYSTOPIA CRAFT BEER ASSOCIATION
BEFORE REPRESENTATIVES OF
THE CONGRESSIONAL SPECIALTY INDUSTRIES CAUCUS
NOVEMBER 23, 2015
Thank you Mr. Chairman, and esteemed members of this committee.
The Dystopia Craft Beer Association (DCBA) represents 85 craft breweries in the State of Texas. It has the largest concentration of craft breweries in Texas outside of Austin. DCBA’s goal is to provide and exchange anything necessary for craft beer production. Promoting the craft beers of Texas is key to community and economic prosperity development in the areas where the breweries reside as well as the whole state.
I am here today in my capacity as President of DCBA to represent the DCBA’s interest, and the importance it serves to the Texas economy and greater community.
As a testament to DCBA’s importance and value to Texas; its members provide over 2,500 job throughout Dystopia and add $10 million dollars to the Texas economy. The industry is one of the fastest growing and is 100% Texas-American made.
The importance of the DCBA becomes clearer after examining three important points. So today, I would like to share these three observations about how we can learn about the DCBA and how we can move forward to benefit Texas as a whole.
The legislature should invest itself into three interconnected pro-agriculturally-friendly-brewing initiatives targeting: (1) combating the disastrous effects of droughts; (2) incentivizing craft brewing companies to stay in Texas; and (3) promoting pro-water reuse programs. Indeed, these are all connected for the greater good of Texas.
To the first point, the government should focus on improving DCBA's main concerns focusing on drought impacts. Droughts can cause a great deal of harm to the economy and the environment. Droughts impact production, thereby affecting the local economy. Droughts impact quality, thereby affecting the taste and uniqueness of the draft beers. Droughts cause lack of growth, thereby leading to stagnant states in the environment. And, droughts become more inefficient and create industry moves leading to the increased prices of the unique beers.
We have had a relatively extensive history with droughts and they have represented a contraction of the Texas economy each time they arrive. Indeed, it is a national problem on a geographic scale from the 13th century to the 1930s Dustbowl, and the 1950s droughts.
However, like other states working on protecting water, we can prevent economic and community disasters by acting before a drought occurs to protect farming and craft brewing practices.
Finding out ways to fix the issue of droughts, or otherwise allocate water in a more effective manner could help avoid natural disasters, such as fires and dust storms. Furthermore, it could especially help these brewing businesses stay afloat, and stay in Texas.
As a second point, the Texas government should incentivize craft brewing companies to stay in Texas. This can be done by compensating their losses through tax breaks or other monetary incentives.
In addition to compensation, the government can work to ensure that monopolies are not generated and that DCBA breweries have access to Texas supplies and realtors at market prices.
These procedures can help keep Texas breweries in business to maximize their profit leading to maximized benefits for those working for the breweries.
Finally, as a third point, providing research incentives to Texas universities invested in helping not only the brewing in the state, but also the greater agricultural role of water is of key importance. Much like California is developing ways to desalinate water, we in Texas could focus on desalination and other methods such as recycling waste water. Such attempts have been tried in Oregon through the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality in their Water Reuse Program. This would require additional research funding to inquire as to what are the causes and develop solutions for improving water use.
Thus, the three points are, (1) we need to address droughts to keep brewing business in Texas before water becomes too expensive, (2) we need to provide incentives for the craft breweries to continue to stay in Texas, and (3) we need to invest in promoting water rejuvenation--either through desalination or water reuse or both.
Investing in breweries can not only help protect Texas jobs, but also promote more cohesive community action for effective and efficient results. Let us challenge ourselves to not only promote and protect the livelihoods of all Texans, but also the uniqueness that makes Texas special.
Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to answering questions from the committee.
Texas Governor Signs 'Save Chick-fil-A' Religious Freedom Law
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has signed into law a bill that protects fast food chain Chick-fil-A and other businesses that donate to anti-LGBTQ groups.
SB 1978, known as the “Save Chick-fil-A Bill,” prohibits any state government agency from taking “adverse action” against individuals or companies for their affiliation to a religious organization.
The legislation, signed by Abbott on Monday, takes effect on Sept. 1, according to the Huffpo.
Republicans in the Texas legislature introduced the legislation in March, soon after the San Antonio City Council blocked Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant at San Antonio International Airport.
San Antonio Councilman Roberto Treviño cited the Georgia-based company’s long history of supporting anti-LGBTQ organizations as a factor.

THE IMMORTALISTS - Documentary on Reversing Aging with Science
THE IMMORTALISTS is the documentary on aging and how we are fighting the process, as exemplified by the work of two very different scientists. A brilliant odd couple (Bill Andrews and Aubrey de Grey) are on a crusade to end aging as we know it, while they bring humanity to the struggle against mortality and deterioration of the human body. We discuss the movie with filmmakers Jason Sussberg and David Alvarado from the 2014 SXSW Film Fest, here on BYOD--the world's only doc talk show.
FILM INFO & DIRECTOR INFO:
Jason Sussberg, David Alvarado (Co-directors) - THE IMMORTALISTS
Two eccentric scientists struggle to create eternal youth in a world they call blind to the tragedy of old age. As they battle their own aging and suffer the loss of loved ones, their scientific quest ultimately becomes personal.
The Immortalists is the story of two eccentric scientists struggling to create eternal youth with medical breakthroughs in a world they call blind to the tragedy of old age. Bill Andrews is a lab biologist and famed long-distance runner racing against the ultimate clock. Aubrey de Grey is a genius theoretical biologist who conducts his research with a beer in hand. They differ in style and substance, but are united in their common crusade: cure aging or die trying. They publicly brawl with the old guard of biology who argue that curing aging is neither possible nor desirable. As Andrews and de Grey battle their own aging and suffer the losses of loved ones, their journeys toward life without end ultimately become personal.
David Alvarado is a New York based filmmaker interested in science, philosophy and future of civilization. He was born the son of a Mexican immigrant in Dallas, Texas where he spent his teen years running amuck with punk rockers on a mission of anarchy. After dropping out of high school and developing an accomplished career in criminal mischief, he switched career paths after realizing the power of film. He soon earned his G.E.D., moved up the ranks of community college and finally reached a university film school where he began to focus on documentary. Finally, in 2010 he completed his Masters of Fine Arts from Stanford University in Documentary Film and Video Production. David's dream is to inspire audiences with emotionally driven stories about people who are at the intersection of where science meets society. At the spry young age of 29 years old, and soon to begin the aging process at his 30th birthday in March at SXSW, he is now ready to get to work.
Jason Sussberg is a documentary filmmaker focused on BIG ideas on human progress and social justice. He started his career working in sports television for the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors. After receiving his MFA at Stanford University in film, he co-founded Dogpatch Films in San Francisco. He is a digital dabbler (with a past life in motion graphics) who trains his lens on social and political topics ranging from jailed journalists, justice system reform to futurism. When he's not in the classroom teaching or co- directing The Immortalists, he is running marathons, making hot sauce from scratch, or yelling at drivers about the legal rights of cyclists. He lives in San Francisco with wife Kate McLean, who is also a filmmaker.
